Candy Bar Poll - Tue, 10/26/10 1:42 PM
0
Snickers in front rounding the first turn...
My vote for Mounds seems diluted by it's brother Candy Almond Joy, but combined
they still don't equal Snickers pull, of which I am somewhat mystified.
And Payday is unloved in poll land, I guess.
We need a favorite regional candy bar poll after this, though the Spud Bar is sure to lose.

Snicker bars out sell every thing else 2 to 1, we have to have two rows in all of our vending machines. I'm not even sure they is a close second. I think snickers gives people what they want, Chocolate, caramel, nuts....Bill

Snicker's is tactilely pleasing.  It gives you the smooth chocolate, creamy nouget, sticky carmel and the bite of the peanut.

The perfect meal.

Does anyone think that M&Ms don't taste the same as they did a few years ago?

Love Mounds, but they eat too fast for me.

Baby Ruths are coated with chocolate colored wax.

That reminds me of a bar that was popular in the Philadelphia area for ages - Goldenberg's Peanut Chews.  There were lots of peanuts, and they were very chewy, but the chocolate coating and chewy candy had little flavor compared to the national brands.  But if you kept at it, they grew on you - seemed more like food than candy.

Michael, when you bought your candy at the corner drug store because it was cheaper on your way to the .25 cent matinee. The Peter Paul Mounds and Almond Joy were not the top choices, they were to easy to share. I was thrown out of the Movies one time at 9 years old, I hit a kid in the eye with my Sugar Daddy, man was I in trouble. They made a good weapon and they lasted all day.......................

we used to throw crackerballs up on the wall at our Wednesday morning matinees during the summer at the Fairway Theater-just down the block from the late lamented Leona Yarbourgh's.
No payday love, huh?
Maybe non chocolate bars are a whole different category.

But Reese's does have a bar out (at least around here) called "Reese's Fast Break".  It is "milk chocolate, peanut butter and nougats".

I tried to write them years ago when they were doing limited time only flavors.  I really think that they should make they with a malted milk layer.  OMG!

Mmmm, I've had it, and I wasn't very impressed.  Now if they can figure out how to turn M&Ms into a bar...  Actually, the reverse is happening, isn't it?  All sorts of candies are coming out as "pieces."

I certainly never heard of using it in a sandwich. And when I was buying them it was just Sportsman's Bracer -- the word chocolate wasn't on the yellow wrapper. I loved them because they were bittersweet chocolate, not that sickly sweet milk chocolate.

Oh, and there was just a single bar per package.

Or don't. It's not the same bar, by a long shot. I used to close my eyes as I ate each piece, and always knew automatically which filling was which. With today's Skybar, the fillings are virtually indistinguishable from each other; even the peanut barely registers.

My favorite bar as a child was the seven up bar. Seven candies in one bar. They have not remade the seven up bar.

Bartl, you are so right.  Skybars now are tasteless, and the chocolate is gross.  Great concept, poor rendering.

I clicked "Kit Kat" as my vote, mainly with their Dark Chocolate option in mind.  But I know my absolute favorite is Coffee Crisp, which has been the reason for our many daytrips to Canada.  More than a few times when the customs officer has asked what my reason for a visit was, I've replied, "Candy bars and all-dressed chips."    Chris

bartl, I can taste the difference in the Skybar fillings but I'm with ayersian on the poor quality of the chocolate.

HDtravlr1, I think the Snickers Almond has replaced the Mars Bar (stateside anyway).

Bruce, I can still get Goldenberg's Peanut Chews down the street from my apartment fro time to me at a Lot-Less store.  Unfortunately, many of the newsstands, bodegas and such that used to sell them now carry the lesser (IMHO) Chew-Ets brand.

One of my favorites is the Big Hunk made by the Annabelle Candy Co. in  Hayward, CA.  Love that honey nougat and those roasted peanuts.  Reminds me of the Italian specialty, Torrone.

My favorite candy bar ever though is the Awesome Peanut Brittle Bar made by See's Candies based in South San Francisco, CA.

See, that's why specialty and regional bars/candys are a different category.
My favorite taste of home, Valomilks
 and Cherry Mash,

wouldn't even really qualify as bars.
Billyboy, I got all your Annebelle treats + Spud
Bars at my local Bimart.
And we've a Sees too.
but no little hammers anymore.

Anyone remember the Mars bars when the were flatter and wider than the MW and Snickers?  The almonds were full halves and on top, under the REAL chocolate.  YUM~!

@Bill, little hammers?  Love Valomilks!  When I visit my sis in Syracuse, there is a place called Kinney Drugs that always seems to have Valomilks, Mallo Cups, Smoothies, Goo Goo Clusters and Bun candies among other harder to find ones.  I go to Economy Candy on the Lower East Side for my Annabelle's fix and they have Rocky Roads in the cooler months. I've tried the Cherry Mash and I liked the consistency/texture but the cherry flavor was too close to the cough medicine I took as a kid!

The hammer was included with the Victoria's Toffee and the peanut brittle in boxes, at least. And it wasn't that long ago they were still in there.

I remember a hammer, but it seems to me it came with some sort of hard licorice.

I lived for English Toffee in the olden days.  The California Brittle was the first piece eaten out of the See's box.  Bite the chocolate coating off with my front teeth and then eat the middle.

I've grown up, though.  I now go for the marzipan first.

billyboy, take a closer look at those Goldenberg's Peanut Chews wrappers.  The Goldenberg company's been extinct for a few years now.  Peanut chews are now made by a company in Bethlehem, PA, and they dropped the Goldenberg name.  Rarely see them anymore.

bill voss, you hit my two favorite regional candies, Valomilk and Cherry Mash.  And yes, like Reese's, I wouldn't consider them bars.

Mars Bars - The Mars company gets pretty convoluted with the naming of their products around the world.  According to wiki, Mars stopped being sold in the US some years ago but restarted this year, only at WalMart.  Mars Bars in other countries are the same as Milky Way in the US.  If you see Mars Bars in the US at a store other than WalMart they are imported (and therefore more like a US Milky Way than a US Mars).  Milky Way in other countries is the same as 3 Musketeers in the US.  If you eat a 3 Musketeers in Portugal on Tuesday it's called a North Star Bar...

Ohhh, what's this thread about? Oh, candy bars. My local Brookshires gave me a free bag of my choice yesterday. It was some kinda holloween deal for regular customers. ice I thought.  I chose Butterfingers! I like to crunch em up into dust before opening each bar.

My favorite is Kit Kat, too, but I'm stunned there's no Reese's.  Reese's is a MUST category.  And I can never remember whether it's spelled with a C or an S, so I always have to look it up.

If you ever want a good read on the history of the Milton Hershey, Forrest Mars and their respective companies, check out "Emperors of Chocolate" by Joel Glenn Brenner.  A real insight into how these two companies started and the very "interesting" people who ran them.  And if you want to know about the smaller companies and how the market works for the Davids vs. the Goliaths, Annabelle, Palmer, Necco, etc..., Steve Almond's "Candyfreak" is pretty hilarious, sad and informative.

I voted for Mounds -- how can you beat dark chocolate and coconut?

I enjoyed the reminiscences about Skybars. I loved those when I was a child.  My brother and I used to split a single bar between us, and for both of us, our favorite square was (I think) nougat, so we'd fight over that one.

Does anyone remember a candy bar, I believe made by Hollywood, which I think was called Smooth Sailing?  My recollection of it was dark chocolate over nougat with some kind of chopped nuts -- maybe black walnut, or macadamia?  That was my all-time favorite candy bar, now long gone.

I also like the Milky Way Dark, which used to be "Forever Yours."

And I like Kit Kat, although they taste better when you buy them in the U.K.

Forever Yours was always my favorite and they'd bring it back for a limited time now and then.  When they introduced the Milky Way Dark the Forever Yours name moved to an ice cream bar/treat.

Dark Milky Ways, fresh, right out of the box when the caramel layer pulls like melted cheese when you bite in to it.... Awwwwwww!

When I was younger there was a Hollywood Bar and Butternut bar that were similar but different.  Obviously not as good.

My personal favorite is Peanut M & M's  (strangely missing from the poll choices).

At my work, we operate a small snack bar: coffee, soda, candy, chips etc.(Secondary to the main purpose) Of the several candy bars inventoried, Snickers far outsells the others, combined.

My vote for Kit Kat was cast after carefully considering Mounds-Almond Joy, also personal favorites.  It's probaby a 3-way tie, so I played eenie meenie.   I've been trying to get my hands on a European Kit Kat for while.  American Lea & Perrins pales in comparison to the UK recipe.

Reese's (milk chocolate) peanut cups, Heath Bars, and the original (Curtiss) ButterFingers. However, I have an order coming November 1st. for the new Bonomo's (vanilla).
Secondary favorites as a kid were, (the original) 5TH Avenue bar, Chunky and, (the original) Three Musketeers.
My mother loved Goldenberg's Chews and Mound's bars.

I must confess.  I love all of these that I've heard of and would buy a new one when presented with the opportunity.  (Except for the Big Cherry... too sweet)

My motto has always been,....  There's a new candy bar... must try it right now.

My favorites? Let's see... Snickers, Mounds, Butterfinger, Payday, York Peppermint Patty, Baby Ruth, Hershey's Milk Chocolate with Almonds, Zero, and Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. BTW, does anyone remember Mason's Peppermint Patties back in the '50s and '60s?

Billyboy - I found Mars bars (labeled as that) at the check out of a Super WalMart as well.  It's different from what I expected - more nuts than I remember, and for some reason, I thought it was supposed to be a dark chocolate.

My favorite candy bar was always a 3Musketeeers.  A close second now would be Reese's whipped pb bar.

Peanut Butter M&M's. I let em melt in my mouth down to the peanut butter. Then I let the peanut butter melt also. Kinda like eatin an oyster. . Peanut M&M's. I let those melt down to the peanut and then eat tha nut.

I got a new kinda Hershey's bar I like... Symphony. I also let that melt in my mouth.

Oh, Kit Kat Bars and Butterfingers... I chew those up.

No one else knew Candy Barr? She was a kinda famous dancer in Dallas back in the 60's. She also knew Jack Ruby.

Bruce, I can still get Goldenberg's Peanut Chews down the street from my apartment fro time to me at a Lot-Less store.
Peanut Chews are in all the stores by me, and in both original dark chocolate and also milk chocolate.

Skybars indeed fail now, and perhaps the ones they sell now were manufactured in the 50s and are just stale.

Like the Valomilk way more than Mallo Cups but I only see them at Cracker Barrels.

I do not know how it is possible that my favorite still-existing candy "bar" is Peter Paul Mounds. I detest coconut in every form and fashion, with this single exception.

Anyone try the Mint Three Musketeers?  It tastes like a piece out of the finest box of chocolates.  (Sees)

Lucious minty nouget filling covered by fine dark chocolate.
