We made a  run up thru the Indiana Amish country, then enjoyed a very nice Polish dinner with Annie and Bob Peeples in Milwaukee, before setting our sights on the Trick or Treat night with our Family out in Baraboo, Wisconsin.  In between stops in Milwaukee and Baraboo we found time to raid the Bargain Table at Usingers Sausage Store in Milwaukee...for us, and for barter-goods to use with Poverty Pete and some of our family.
Here's our guard-dogs protecting us from the aggressive Amish War-Wagons !!

Anne and Bob met us at the Crocus Restaurant on 13th St in Milwaukee. It was busy, but the server was a really sweet young lady and she worked hard to take good care of us.
Here's our 'group and a photo of my Polish Pork Chops with Peppers and Onion and Potato Pancake.

AND  here is a sample of the sausage and Pastrami etc that we bought at USINGER'S. We love to visit their store, and especially to check over the 'bargains' !

I'll skip the grandkid photos...Just let it be said that ALL involved in the Trick or Treat game suffered sugar-highs for the evening !!  Breakfast Monday morning at the Log Cabin in Baraboo filled us just right for the 500 mile ride home.

OK That's the Readers Digest version of a report!!!

Al, as usual, your photos are great.  Good to see a ppic of Ann and Bob.  I know Poverty is looking forward to your purchase and he has a nice treat for you.  I met with Poverty last week in Nashville and he and I toured the town completely.  We had some great popsciple's, Hot fried chicken at 400F and BBQ at Neeleys and shared a glass of wine at the Maxwell Hoouse Hotel where ROZ and I stayed during her meeting.  As you recall, Poverty and I called tou from the Hot fried chicken place.

Neeley's BBQ has a very nice location right on the Cumberland River with a great view of the Titan,s practice field.

Gregg,
We spent all Friday morning shopping the Goshen, IN Mennonite Thrift Shops...Then tried to beat the weekend traffic in Chicago. It was a close vote, but that schedule beat the Cicero Freddies stop by one vote (hers!!).
We hope to stop in the old Czech neighborhood on our next trip !

BDTN-  Part of the 'Loot' we picked up on the bargain-sale table at Usingers is targeted for sale or trade to our Tennessee buddy Poverty Pete.  He has already called to say he will come up next week to pick up his goodies...10 lbs or more of the Brisket/Pastrami chunks and a bunch of the summer garlic sausage.  Usingers catalog is great, but in a corner of the retail store they have a bargain-table....contents change frequently...at really great prices. That Brisket/Pastrami was only $2 a lb !!! I like it because it is fully cooked, but not smothered in the pepper and other spices that kill the beef flavor for me.

Is there a reason that Roadfood people stop in the MKE area without contacting Contingent members that would love to meet up with them? Just something I noticed....

The logistics of the trip gave us just the evening hours Friday...after a long day of shopping in Indiana then driving up to Milwaukee. There was no intention of skipping anyone...just the need to have a quiet dinner with a couple of friends and sack out to prep for the madhouse that was the Grandkid Halloween in Baraboo.
We have enjoyed meeting with many of our RF friends in the Chicago-Milwaukee area over the years, and will again when time allows for getting the group together.  I really wanted to stop at Freddies in Cicero/Berwyn, but that great food would have caused a lot of difficulty in the schedule to be ready for dinner-out later that evening.
See you guys in the Spring !!

Joe, Thanks for the feedback. It was great to share time with Annie and Bob, I know that she missed her RF friends, and seeing them was a real fun 'Welcome Back' experience.

I don't know, Al. Pictures of the area to show what the culinary experience is really like, photos of the food, the place with the food, the wonderful stuff you bought for later consumption, and the people with whom you enjoyed your repast? What's that to do with Roadfood? (Is that a potato pancake or a manhole cover that just looks delicious?)

Oh, and it's nice to see Anne. Hi there Anne.

MH,
I am pleased that you liked the concise report. It shows that , when you take your 'meds' on schedule, you can be quite civil !!
One note of interest from Janet- After visiting (and shopping) in all three of the best-noted Amish Community areas (PA-Ohio-Indiana) she prefers the Ohio area for our next Amish shopping tour. It may have been the time of year or the great weather that influenced us to make that choice, but we will definitely be heading back to the area north and east of Columbus next Spring.

We had a delightful but short time with the Bowens. Bob and I look forward to meeting up with others soon. The meal was great.I had sauteed veal w/mushrooms served with potato pancakes, and Bob and Janet had the Polish plate, with a sausage, three types of pierogi( cheese, meat and sauerkraut),a cabbage roll and sauerkraut.Bob chose a boiled potato for his side. I have never had a better potato pancake.Ever.The veal was simply prepared but very tasty. We all shared bites( even Al gave up some of his pork chops) and were quite impressed.I dont know what kind of seasonings they used to prepare the food, but I gleefully realized I hadnt needed the salt or pepper. We ended the night at Kopps-Bob and I shared the Tiramisu custard, Janet had a double scoop cone-tiramisu and snicker cheesecake, and Al had a gorgeous looking turtle sundae( he would not, however, share) I also brought a pint of chocolate custard home. All in all a too short but lovely evening.
Hi to you too, Mr. Hoffman!!
Nice to meet you, too Joe.
Great to be in touch with all of you again!

BTW if you ever want to see me at my best, stop in the Centerburg Cemetery ( the new side on the right side of the road), near the first turn out as you climb the hill you can smile and wave at the future home of a REAL Jack-In-The-Box !  The stone is in place waiting like a Moon-rock for it's owner to 'turn-up' (so to speak!

I am eternally grateful that I have left those imbibing habits in my early life far behind !  It was not the Pizza business (Domino Effect) that caused the embarrassment, but rather the kind folks at Embassy Suites. Their 2 hour long "Happy Hour"  filled me with (among other things) glee prior to attending the Polish dinner celebration, where I got 'Down-and-Dirty' with a muti-sensory connection to the Polish Plate similar to the one in the photo above.  I could hardly look at Janet's dinner, much less taste it...even after 35 years+ since the first episode!" />

Good stuff as always Al!  I made it to Crocus only before, but it was a very enjoyable experience.  It sure it great to see Annpeeples again.  And no trip report of yours is complete with at least one photo of the pups.  With all that great looking and undoubtedly, great smelling meat in the truck, that must have been driving Demi and Duff crazy!

Annie and Bob looked great. It is so good to have her back with the group. We laughed for a long time that evening !  Janet had no concept of what KOPP'S Custard was...thinking of Ted Drewes and Culvers. So it was a real shock for her to get a two scoop cone that she could not finish !  All she could do was ask what the 4-5-6 scoops cones were like???

I wish I had a photo of the server at Crocus. She was a little blonde cutie !  Good Polish accent affecting her English a little, but willing to repeat stuff for clarity. TTM would have lost his heart there, for sure.
The dogs received some of the strongest (smokiest) pig's ears and gnaw-bones from the folks at Yoder's Meat Market in Indiana. We gave them one ear, cut in half, at the motel that night, but it reeked of the smokey brine, so we kept the rest til we got home Monday. The ears were consumed, but the bones keep reappearing from under pillows and cushions where they are hidden after a gnaw or two.

Actually, there were 3 types of pierogis on Bob and Janets plate-ground meat, potato, and sauerkraut. I am not sure of Janets opinion, but Bob especially liked the meat filled one. I tried them all, and was equally impressed. And yes, our server was a blonde cutie-even Bob mentioned that after dinner!!!

Thanks for helping me out on the Pierogi Question, Annie ! Your care package in in the mail.

I was  surprised (a little) at the relationship between The Polish food we saw and we ate this visit...and the Czech food I have enjoyed over the years. ....and even the Serbian food of the earlier visits to Three Brothers. Obviously the geographic and cultural links between all those countries in Europe make the common-ground link, but their seemed to be more than that when you really compare dish for dish.  I guess this would be the theme for another discussion somewhere, but it has generated some thought to this old guy.  We could do a whole study of "Dumplings" without duplicating many recipes !!

Marlene,
My Mom was born in Prague in 1912. She ALWAYS referred to the family origin as Czech, or sometimes Bohemian. However the reality of the situation was that she left (as an infant) before WWI when that whole area was part of the Austria-Hungarian Empire (The Hapsburgs were in power). Her immigration papers at Governor's Island, and the steamship manifest I got in my Ancestry search, says Austria for country of origin!!

My grandfather was born in Przemyśl, Poland.  When searching Ancestry.com I found that he put Austria on all important documents.  Przemyśl is pronounced Shemish!

My cousin that was born in Czech....ia says his place of birth was Kamenice River, Slovakia

Bad news. I should have know when Pilot bought Flying J that the Flying J's restaurant would be in trouble. Well, no more huge country fried steaks. No more buffet for those who do buffets. No more truck-stop food that is good and plentiful. I stopped at the Sunbury Grill this morning with the intention of grabbing some breakfast while on my way to hunt pheasants and it was jam packed. So I decided to hit the FLying J instead. When I pulled in and parked I wasn't paying attention  and discovered as I walked inside that The Cookery had been replaced by a Denny's. So much for good food. Anyway, you are warned.
