I've never had a Papa John's pizza before last night, I'm glad I haven't, although if I had, I wouldn't have had one last night.
I ordered a thin crust large with double bacon and pepperoni, and onions, the order taker told me the thin crust wouldn't hold that many greasy toppings very well, I thanked her and asked what the other crusts were, I dont like thick, she said a hand tossed normal crust, so I ordered a medium with the same toppings. My wife picked it up on the way home from Wal Mart. The pizza was $21.99. It was the size of a small pizza anywhere else, very little tasteless sauce, no visible onions, very little cheese and other toppings, a tasteless crust, in short, GARBAGE, the absolute worst fast food place EVER. Makes BK, KFC, TB, Mickey D's, seem like fine dining.
Anyone else have issues with this hellhole?

The Papa John's in Pittston recently closed.  I heard my teenage kids talking about how bad the pizza was.  That was enough to keep me out.
 
We also had a KFC, Pizza Hut and Long John Silvers close up.  We don't like no stinkin chains in Pittston

I've had Papa John's apizza a few times and never got anything from them that resembled what you describe. Now I'm from New Haven, and I grew up on pies from Pepe's, Sally's and The Spot, so I'm not going to try to tell anyone that Papa John's in any way resembles good stuff. But considering where I live, it's adequate. Their mediums, here, are 12-inchers, and I've always gotten their regular -- not thin -- crust. I order mine light on the sauce with just Italian sausage as a topping and I pay less than ten bucks. That said, I do doctor mine with olive oil, oregano, garlic granules and red pepper flakes, and then put it into a 350-degree oven just long enough for the stuff I've added to meld with the pie.
 
As I said, it's not New Haven, but it's OK. One more thing, the large pies sold today by pizzerias out here in flyover country -- 14-inchers, I believe might be standard for large -- are the same size as what I used to get when I ordered a small pie in New Haven.  That, of course, was a while ago, as likely can be told by the fact that I used to pay 40 cents for a plain one back then.

When I worked in the newsroom in Chambersburg, we got together and ordered a couple of Papa John's pizzas. Now,most of the guys in the newsroom, photogs and reporters, were single young guys. We all tried a slice and the rest of it got thrown away. And these are guys who will eat practically anything. The sauce was bland and sweet, the toppings were gross. I wouldn't ever eat that again.

My experience with Papa Johns has not been good. In fact I have to rate Domino's a step above it. Keep in mind we're using a very low set of steps here.

When my wife came home she said they had a medium pizza with a bunch of toppings advertized for $12 something. I kid you not on this. I don't know if the franchise has the latitude to charge what they want but my wife forked over $21.99 for a laughable hunk of junk. Based on what you say here, I'm calling them after this post!
I just got off the phone with them, they are running a special, an extra large with 3 toppings for 12 bucks, when I asked the guy how much a medium with double bacon, double pepperoni and onions would be he said $23.00, I said why is that, he said, because we are running a special. Go figure.

I tried Papa John's when one first opened up in Madison a few years ago and that was my opinion as well.  Can't remember for sure how bland it was but the sweetness definitely stuck in my mind.

My guess is that they make up what they give away on advertised specials from the people who call in "cold" ordering what appeals to them.
 
If on the road, I always manage to find a "deal" from Papa John's, Pizza Hut, or Dominos if they are the only game in the town. Hotels have menus with coupons. Look for ads in newspaper. You can also order over the Internet or get coupons off the Internet. Also, ask the store what their deals are before placing an order.
 
Mama Mary or Sun of Italy premade crusts, Pastorelli pizza sauce from Target, and Sun of Italy pizza cheese will make a better pie.

Papa John's, like Pizza Hut and Domino's, has special pricing for some of their pizzas right now nationwide.  I'd definitely call them about it.
 
That said, Papa John's was for years my favorite chain pizza.  High quality toppings, excellent sauce, super service.  However, I haven't had a good pizza from them in about 5 years.  Something has gone wrong in the Papa John's system.   The crust is now like burned cardboard, the sauce doesn't taste the same, and it appears (at least to me) they're skimping on the quality and amount of toppings.  Papa John's is in desperate need of a new pizza identity, not unlike the changes Domino's made this year.

I'm guessing this has more to do with your local franchise than the chain in general.  They're running all sorts of specials here, too, but that's how much it was.  I didn't put double pepperoni (I thought it was single), but still...there is NO way it would've been that much.

I'm with Michael Hoffman on this.  It's not gourmet pizza, but I have never had anything as bad as you described from Papa John's here, Chewie.  It's our go-to quick-delivery place, about 800 yards from my door as the crow flies (the wood and coal fired pizza places up the highway don't deliver in my neighborhood [(] ).  A 14" six-cheese with pepperoni and olives was $11 + tax, etc.  I reheat take-out pizza on a pizza stone in the oven after sprinkling some pepper flakes and grating some parmesan cheese on it, and find it acceptable.
Like any chain, I suppose the operator can make a difference, and prices may be regional.

The way I see it is double Bacon (2 items), double Pepperoni (2 items) and Onions. Now that is 5 items. Not 3
Do not know what they charge for extra toppings. Do not have a Papa Johns here. Lost the BK also. Someone informed me
that Dominos for a 3 item special that extra cheese was not included in the 3 item specials. they charge for that.
Here have pizza shop that 12" small, 14" medium and 16" large - the family is a 20".

We don't have a Poppa John's here in Wickenburg or any other chain pizza place for that matter. The last time I tried Pappa John's, I was really disappointed by the lukewarm pie coupled with bland sauce and limp crust. I haven't tried them in years.

The only one I sampled wasn't as good as a low end frozen pizza.
If it was an abberation, it swore me off another forever.

I've only had Papa Johns once, but it wasnt the dire stuff everyone seems to be posting. It was a typical fast food pizza that was edible.

Exactly, Tkitna.  It's not horrid.  It's just not a fine pizza.  What it does is it fills a need.  Papa John's is a great place for young kids to buy a pizza at an affordable price. 
 
It tastes good but it's not the food of the Gods.

What makes me mad is what you guys mentioned, that they charge so much. We've had them a few times, nothing to write home about. I don't hate them because they're a chain. I dislike them because their pizza isn't good.

We ordered form there when it was new to our area, and we hated it. The dogs ended up eating over half of it as we just coundnt stand it.And believe me, Bob and I normally have no trouble polishing off a pizza.

when you have no other choice and you want that type of food, bad is better than none.
I love the Pizza Hut stuffed crust PAN pizza, but you can only get it once in a while when they have a promotion for it.

I was in Pigeon Forge once upon a time on a late Sunday night and the only joint open was Domino's and I was starving so I called and ordered one from my motel - it came and I ate it but it was HORRIBLE from the first bite to the last bite.
 
This was the only Domino's pizza I have ever bought.

Papa John's was barely edible 15 years ago when it was the only available thin crust pizza near work .. I tried it a few months ago and I swear the crust reminded me of a toaster strudal pastry ... nasty nasty nasty

Michael, I heartly disagree, I wanted to say, WOW, how come I haven't done Papa John's before.
Simply put, I don't judge a place because it's a chain. Plenty of chains I like a bunch. Papa John's first experience for me was the pits, to the point I'll never go back.

Guess I'm not a pizza snob.  I also like to doctor up my pizzas with chopped onions and olives besides other tasty things.
 
I also sometimes add more cheese.  Papa John's is a good start in a pinch.

I don't believe a good pizza should be one bought and ingredients added to make it edible.  I've never been a big fan of pizza but Costco has one that's pretty good for my tastes and reasonably priced.

Perhaps I could have been more clear. When I said some, I was not referring to you. The experience you recounted was clearly not a result of a person not liking chains.

Actually, when I tried Papa John's, I did so with high hopes based on their advertisements. Their quality, in my opinion, was pretty much frozen pizza; not even as good as the local Domino's (but better than Pizza Hut). On the other hand, I live in Northern New Jersey, where there are a number of good quality alternatives. The quality of Papa John's ingredients is pretty low, and they try to compensate by way too much corn syrup in the sauce.
 
On the other hand, when I order from Domino's, I order their "oddball" pizzas, which, as they bear no resemblance to regular pizza, can be judged on their own merit (I kind of like their cheesesteak pizza, for example).

We only have pizza chains here in Versailles, Ky, and our Papa John's is pretty darn good - last  night we got a large Super Supreme (or whatever they call it) for about $10.60 or so including tax.  It was good - I wouldn't have paid $21 for it, but for what it cost it was worth it and we were in a hurry and I have leftovers for lunch today.
 
I'd choose Papa John's over other chains though I haven't had pizza from Mellow Mushroom yet.

If I have to pick a pizza from one of the major chains, the only one I will choose is Papa John's.  Agreed they are not anything great, but if you can't get a good mom & pop pizza, or make one of your own, it will do in a pinch.

I often do because I have a really hard time paying as much as they want to charge for, say, olives, when I have a whole jar of them in my refrigerator.  I'll get whatever the special is, then add according to my mood from things I keep at home.

I don't understand it either Anneaples.
if I'm ordering a $10 - $15 pizza it better satisfy me without adding more stuff to it & cooking it more. in the end it cost you about $20 with ingredients & time spent making a $15  manhole cover taste better.
we get Tombstone extra chesse on sale for 3 for $10, add 'rooms, 'roni,more cheese & 1/2 with sewer trout.
good stuff for less than $5 a pie.

That makes sense, never thought of doing that. I eat my own pizza most often though, so when I do end up ordering out I avoid the issue altogether by going local.

I have had a few Papa John pizzas (please i do not say "pies") over the years and I studied that annoying sweetness with a near-technical aproach.I wont go into all the details,but i think that cloying sweetness is not built into the sauce but rather into the crust,and possibly just the "cornichon" edge crust.I won't claim to know how they do it,but its probably something like the house rolls at the Texas Roadhouse steak chain,which people say have a "buttery sugar coating".They don't because the butter there has no sugar in it.The sweetness is built into the bread.For proof get some butter on a bake potato-its not sweet.Might not even be butter.
    I have bought pizzas which are legendary for sweet sauce,for example
the locally beloved pizza at "Bargain Bills Market" in Laurel Delaware.This place makes no bones about the sweetness of its sauce,to the point where locals say "Hey,that sweet stuff is what I like the best".Truthfully,its not bad but its obvious that the sauce is sweet and the crust is not.As I get older,I can't make these taste distinctions as well anymore,and thats a shame,I suppose its something that degenerates with age.
    I cant really imagine anything thats good about Papa Johns,but the sweet crust is just ridiculous.

Hello, American in China.
Another Papa John's location went out of business in my Chinese hometown, near my house. I really wanted a gut bomb pizza but to no avail.
Oddly, Pizza Hut does well here, even though it is the same sh*tty pizza as in the USA.

Update:  On three occasions, I ordered Papa John's current summer specials ($11 for a large "The Works" and $10 for a large Italian) and they were excellent.  Guess I'll continue ordering and then complain if the quality goes down.  Also, they have a Monday Mania promotion right now: any large pizza for $8.99.  What a deal.

My husband and I have both had food poisoning from our two tries with Papa John's. After the second we noticed in a regular newspaper column their Board of Health Grade A had slipped to a B. For awful tasting pizza and an awful experience to boot, you can guarantee Papa John's will never be in our house again. Those 99 cent Totinos pizzas would work better in a pinch!

Actually, they're not too bad heated on a pizza stone (mind you, we are talking about frozen pizza standards, not fresh pizza standards. Papa Johns? Mediocre. By frozen pizza standards....

I have to admit, bartl, I buy Totinos on occasion. Maybe its the memory of eating them as a youth with my friends late night-but they are cheap, and in my opinion, better than Papa Johns any day.( For the money)

I live in China, in a city called Hangzhou near Shanghai. We had several Papa John's outlets open and close within about a five years span,  the ones that do survive is basically because of foreign tourism. Pizza Hut is still going strong here, why is beyond me. Papa's was only slightly better.
 
I like their thin crust, and was annoyed that they did not have the medium size thin, and that I had to order the large one. I used to love those "cheese stick" bread things and the garlic butter. Eating that mess was like getting drunk, but with calories and salt instead of alcohol. Instead of my head having a hangover, it was my intestines getting the cramps.
 
The Chinese cant make pizza either, so I basically go without, or I get a gut bomb.
