Christmas in Huntsville, Al - Sun, 01/2/11 10:45 PM

Hey Gang

So we spent the week after Christmas visiting Mrs. Sippi's family so I thought I'd post a quick report.

I had my first taco truck experience and very much enjoyed it. I just had a snack of a steak and a chicken taco. The best word to describe them was fresh. They tasted fresh.

Really very nice with a pleasing, lingering aftertaste. Great sauces too.
" _mce_src="http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/null" />

G's Country Kitchen is a must stop place.
" _mce_src="http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/null" />
A hole in the wall place with the best mac and cheese and catfish I've ever had. Everything was fantastic.
" _mce_src="http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/null" />

The Po' Boy Factory makes some seriously great sandwiches.
" _mce_src="http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/null" />
The hot sausage is brought in from Patton's in La.
" _mce_src="http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/null" />

Last but certainly not least is HSV's oldest restaurant, Big Spring Cafe. It's old, it's literally falling apart and it's just good old time burgers and dogs. It just breathes nostalgia.
" _mce_src="http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/null" />

They're on both the al.com and Alabama Tourism lists of things to eat.

Well that's just a short report on some of the good stuff I ate. It doesn't include a trip to Dreamland, a great traditional southern NY day lunch by my SIL and of course, the good stuff on the road.

I'll post links to my blog as I finish these up with more pictures, in depth reviews and some history.

Happy New Year to all.

OH Jeez now I have to take three off my list. I will never be able to get in these places again. LOL
Po Boy Factory and G's is always crowded. What can I say good,no outstanding food for the price. And Big Spring Cafe is an institution. I had the pleasure of a local show me the place decades ago.  The greasest, best burgers in the area. You pick it up and bite into the sandwich and the grease and juices run down your forearm. that is a Burger. Give it a 9 Napkin. Hey look at the parking lot. Full
Loved the report.

I am so glad you ate at Big Spring Cafe. It is one of my fav. places in Huntsville. I have been eating their since I was a little girl. They were originally near the Big Spring downtown (hence their name). I always get a burger w/only mustard and onions and a chili dog. They also have the red slaw dogs.

The Po Boy Factory is also another one of my favs. Next time you are in Huntsville, try Duffy's Deli for the white chili and my new fav. place Dallas Mill Deli (their burgers are great, big, juicy and they always seem to have the freshest tomatoes on them). Their strawberry/pretzel salad is a must.

Thanks for the tips. Duffy's is on my radar.

We'll be down probably at Easter to visit the inlaws. Perhaps we can all meet up.

Strawberry pretzel salad must be a local or Southern thing. My SIL makes it for Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc. I didn't realize she wasn't the only one who does. It's delicious in any case.

(I don't know who's picture that is and hope they forgive me for using it)
That's about it right there.

Here's a link to a bunch of recipes. I suspect they're all pretty much the same.

No, I asked because my granny from Washington state does too and I don't think I've ever seen it outside there--but I'm not the most up to date on your congealed salads.  It's so yummy.

Alright gang. Here's the last review from my Christmas visit. Sorry it took so long but I had a slight hiatus and am just getting back to things.
