Buckaroo, you've been missed!  Hope all is well with you in your new home.  Come up and see us some time!  We've got two tours coming up in the next 60 or so days; one in Chicago and one in Milwaukee.

Your buddy,
Buddy

Glad to have you back, Bob!  If you're interested, I'm going to be in Greensburg for lunch on the 23rd and am planning on hitting Storie's and Pork-N-More with a couple of people from a barbecue board...you're certainly welcome but I'll also have plenty of time to stop in Batesville for some fried chicken and a casket factory tour later in the day.

Well, thank goodness you're back, Bob!   We were all worried about you.  Now, can you re-post that trip report that you began but didn't finish that I was a part of?  When we last saw you two years ago, you were headed from southern Indiana to see Buffetbuster in Pittsburgh?  Just pick up where you left off.  Your presence here on Roadfood will be much appreciated by everyone.

I really appreciate so many of you welcoming me back, but I don't think you should anticipate any more trip reports. The unpleasant events of two years ago pretty much killed the interest / passion that I had for that aspect of roadfooding, and I honestly don't know if I'll ever get it back. The fact that I've returned to posting on this site, when I had sworn that I never would again, shows just how much truth there is to the old saying "never say never", so who knows? A year or two from now the trip report bug might return ( depends on how good my therapist is at his job! ) Brad, the 23rd in Greensburg sounds good to me ( it's less than 20 miles from Batesville ); I ate last year at that BBQ place and wasn't too impressed, but then I was there on a day when everything seemed to be going wrong ( ice machine broken, etc. ) Maybe I'll have a better experience this time. No tours at the casket plant, but I can introduce you to some fried chicken in the area that will knock your socks off.

Odds are I'll have a few hours to kill that afternoon so if Greensburg doesn't interest you (sorry to hear you had a bad time at Pork-N-More) I can certainly stop in Batesville since it's going to be right on my way.

Brad, my meal at Pork-n-More wasn't a bad one, it just wasn't quite as good as I had hoped it would be. As I said, I picked the wrong day to visit as the staff was having their problems that day ( primarily that tempermental ice machine. ) I've been thinking about giving it another try lately, and the 23rd is as good a time as any. And believe me, there's some really great fried chicken to be had down here, all at non-chain family-owned places of course ( the Old Brick Tavern in nearby Penntown is my favorite; the building predates the Civil War by nearly ten years. )

Sounds like Bob is angling for a Contingent tour of Southern Indiana Fried Chicken.  That actually sounds pretty good, doesn't it?  In fact, given the geographic parameters involved, this could be a historic meeting between The Contingent and The Glee Club.

Would Southern Indiana survive the invasion?

A SE Indiana fried chicken tour sounds good, Buddy, but someone other than me will have to put it together; I'm permanently out of the RF tour arraignment biz. Some info please on the two upcoming Contingent gatherings you mentioned earlier. It's not too likely that I can make either but we''ll see. BTW, I'm going to be in Chicagoland all day this Sat. ( the 18th ) due to a late morning doctor's appointment; would you be interested in meeting for a late lunch ( 1:30 or so ) at Paradise Pup?

Bob, we're doing the annual Fred's day in Burlington on Saturday...any chance you could make it?

I'll let you know when plans for the 23rd get finalized but right now it's looking like an 11am start time.

Well, if it's Fred's Day in Burlington on Saturday, I imagine Buddy's not going to be available for lunch at the P-Pup. Wish I could be part of this gathering, but other commitments that day ( the doctor's appointment plus dinner with old friends in Chicago ) rule it out. Brad, 11 AM works fine; you are talking about Eastern time, aren't you? Almost all of Indiana is on ET.

Update: There is a very slight chance that I can join ya'll at Fred's around two or so, but I wouldn't be able to stay too long' since I have to be at my friend's place on the north side by 7PM. It all depends on how quickly I can get out of the doctor's office, so no guarantees.

Bob,

Here's the thread for the Fred's meet-up:
http://www.roadfood.com/F...87&mpage=10#708396

Here's info about the Chicago Tour in September:
http://www.roadfood.com/F...ontingent-m704573.aspx

The Milwaukee Tour in October:
http://www.roadfood.com/F...ontingent-m704573.aspx

There's even some loose talk about a Detroit tour, but no one seems to be taking the bull by the horns.  Still, it could happen:
http://www.roadfood.com/F...707&mpage=2#708381

Be sure to do the "Doodle Survey" in the Milwaukee thread.  It will help us solidify a date for the tour.  There's a similar survey in the Chicago thread, but I think that date is pretty well set for September 1st.

Hope we'll see you soon!

Buddy

Yes, Eastern.  The time change is great for the return trip but not so great for the trip out, which is when I actually like to take my time and I hate giving up that hour!

Hope you can make it Saturday!

Re:I miss Bob's roadtrip reports - Thu, 08/16/12 2:09 PM
I definitely won't be able to make either the September or October tours, but things are looking better for my being at Fred's on Saturday. My doctor takes patients in the order that they show up, so if I can get my lazy rump out of bed early enough, I should be able to make this work. BTW, my Hoosier relocation hasn't worked out the way I hoped it would, so I'm going to be moving back to Chicagoland when my lease is up in the spring. You Contingent members will get to see me more often ( whether you want to or not! )

Louis, I do still have all the pictures from the Pittsburgh trip in June 2010, and thanks to all the kind comments and encouragement from so many Roadfooders, I'll probably finish that trip report sometime in the near future. Right now though, I'm unable to download any photos online. There were some problems getting my computer hooked up when I moved to Batesville and, as a result, I've lost the ability to do the photo-posting thing. Sometime soon I'll get a tech guy over here to straighten things out and then, even though I'm not in a position to travel much nowadays, maybe you'll see an occasional trip report.

Welcome home, once again, Bob, and this time don't go away!

Yay, Bob's back!!! I don't want to live in a world where the bullies are allowed to win.

Nice to see you, my friend. And yes, you are expected to come up with an Indiana tour for next spring. You can leave Roadfood.com, but you can't leave The Contingent. Yes, it is like the mafia. The Third Coast Mafia.

I'm glad to be back, Aimee, but, like I said, I'm out of the food tour organizing biz. If anyone else wants to plan a SE Indiana chicken tour, I'll be glad to help in putting it together, but I'm happier being a noncom than an officer in any future troop movements.  BTW, there's a pizza place in downtown Batesville called Ison's that does a really dynamite thin crust pepperoni pie and deserves to be included in any RF tour down this way.

My lease is up at the end of March, so I've got about seven more months of Hoosier status ahead of me, then it's back to good ol' Crook Cook County. And yes, this town is the corporate home and main plant ( they have six in the U.S. and Mexico ) of Batesville Casket Co., one of the country's largest manufacturers of "permanent housing". Their sister company Hill-Rom ( hospital beds ) is also located here.

I was in a very nifty hospital bed last week for a renal clearance @ Mayo Clinic. I wonder if the bed was made there?

We'll have to see what we can do for a Roadfood Road Trip!!

I don't know about that, Aimee. Something tells me that there's not a whole lot of people who would pass up the tourist destinations in nearby Cincinnati for a chance to see coffins and cremation urns being made. But then, lots of people watch Jersey Shore, so there's no accounting for taste.

Davydd, Batesville Casket's products are certainly fancier, but they sure can't match the price that North House charges. If it wasn't for my total lack of woodworking skills, I'd definitely take advantage of this bargain. Come to think of it, though, I don't need to be concerned about the price... I'm not the one who's gonna pay for the damn thing!
