I miss Bob's roadtrip reports - Wed, 02/2/11 10:00 AM
Not meaning to stir up trouble. Not trying to start anything. But I really miss Bob's roadtrip reports and pictures.
Bob - I miss your Mayberry Days and pics from runs through Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennesee and Virginia. Hoping to jump in my little Rambler American and do a back-road 2-lane trip myself.

Folks - let's not start a jumping up-and-down or hollering thread. Some of us that can't get out for long tours due to commitments enjoyed Bob's pics. I'm one of those people.

I don't ever remember seeing one of his posts but if you miss it, you're allowed and don't let anyone tell you different.

He did change his ID, but I don't think he has been posting much of late. Perhaps once the weather warms he will hit the roads and share his tales of the highway once again.

I must have missed something.  Why would fondly remembering Carolina Bob's posts "stir up trouble,"  "start something" or cause "jumping up-and-down or hollering?"

Fondly remembering Carolina Bob's posts shouldn't stir up trouble or cause issues. I probably should not have stated it that way. I simply wanted to state that I miss his reports - but did not want this thread to degenerate. I should have more faith in people.

Certain people (who never post trip reports btw) complained that his reports had too many pictures of the road and not enough pictures of the food.  It understandably hurt his feelings.   I would be in the camp that would love to see more of his reports.  Those that don't like them should just ignore rather than complain.

FYI, surrycounty is the poster formally known as Carolina Bob

For Carolina Bob:

When I take you out, tonight, with me,
Honey, here's the way it's goin' to be:
You will set behind a team of snow white horses,
In the slickest gig you ever see!

Chicks and ducks and geese better scurry
When I take you out in the surrey,
When I take you out in the surrey with the fringe on top!
Watch that fringe and see how it flutters
When I drive them high steppin' strutters.
Nosey pokes'll peek thru' their shutters and their eyes will pop!
The wheels are yeller, the upholstery's brown,
The dashboard's genuine leather,
With isinglass curtains y' can roll right down,
In case there's a change in the weather.
Two bright sidelight's winkin' and blinkin',
Ain't no finer rig I'm a-thinkin'
You c'n keep your rig if you're thinkin' 'at I'd keer to swap
Fer that shiny, little surrey with the fringe on the top!

Aunt Eller:

Would y' say the fringe was made a' silk?

Curly:

Wouldn't have n' other kind but silk.

Laurey:

Has it really got a team of snow white horses?

Curly:

One's like snow,
the others more like milk.

All the world'll fly in a flurry
When I take you out in the surrey,
When I take you out in the surrey with the fringe on top!
When we hit that road, hell fer leather,
Cats and dogs'll dance in the heather,
Birds and frogs'll sing all together and the toads will hop!
The wind'll whistle as we rattle along,
The cows'll moo in the clover,
The river will ripple out a whispered song,
And whisper it over and over:
Don't you wisht y'd go on forever?
Don't you wisht y'd go on forever?
Don't you wisht y'd go on forever and ud never stop
In that shiny, little surrey with the fringe on the top!

I can see the stars gettin' blurry,
When we ride back home in the surrey,
Ridin' slowly home in the surrey with the fringe on top!
I can feel the day gettin' older,
Feel a sleepy head near my shoulder,
Noddin', droopin' close to my shoulder, till it falls kerplop!
The sun is swimmin' on the rim of a hill;
The moon is takin' a header,
And jist as I'm thinkin' all the earth is still,
A lark'll wake up in the medder.
Hush, you bird, my baby's a-sleepin'!
Maybe got a dream worth a-keepin'
Whoa! you team, and jist keep a-creepin' at a slow clip clop.
Don't you hurry with the surrey with the fringe on the top!

If he hasnt had any roadtrips, at least talk him into contributing his 2 cents once in awhile. He has been to many places we have talked/are talking about! I am sure he could steer me to some good eating on my spring Wis, Ill, Missouri, Kentucky,Indiana roadtrip!

LOL @ doggydaddy.

People are bewildered with my photos sometimes too (not ones I post here). I hear things like, "You took a picture of a *effing* rock?" Why yes, yes I did. I like effing rocks. So much so that I had a pet rock named Henry from ages 11-16. He got lost in one of our moves & I never got over it.

I know Bob was planning a move to Nowheresville, population 6. I also know he might not be feeling up to moving around in this weather as it's not good for joint pain. I wish he'd post too, but he will be back in his own time.

How about somebody sneak up to the Hudson Valley in New York. Bob likes bridges and pictures. I don't think anything could get more scenic than the Poughkeepsie railroad bridge. It got burned out in the 70's, was in disuse. Looks like it is finally open as a park!

Okay - so I need to plan a drive to the Hudson Valley. There is a very nice little dinner off 84 in Beacon. Then maybe head to the bridge with some friends - pretend we're a train, chug out over the Hudson and snap some pics.

BBQ? Tennessee? Very cool. If you are in the neighborhood, take a tour through Cades Cove. I'm not sure when the Bluegrass Festival is, or if you enjoy Bluegrass - but Cades Cove is a very nice place to visit.

I enjoyed Bob's reports, bridges and all. His view of travel was very much like mine: enjoy the journey itself as much as the end goal. His trip reports made me want to take the trip and experience the process, not just gobble up the food. I'm sure he won't be back, though. Life is short, and he seems to have realized that the sniping wasn't worth the effort.

IIRC, he did post pics of his food. He likes bridges because he worked for XXXXXXXXXX, a national rail company, until XXXXXXXXXXX forced him into early retirement.

If you read a trip report about, oh, let's say, a trip...on the road...from the South Side of Chicago to North Carolina, I don't think it's unreasonable to include pics of the scenery. If anyone had a problem with me including 800+ pics of the Hancock Building with my Chicago slideshows, they certainly never said so to my face or otherwise. Good to know!

I "spoke" with Bob via email and IM often while this went on, and what ever the intent of comments may have been, the result was that he did feel bullied and was very upset and hurt by what went on. Personally, not speaking as a moderator, I thought it was shameful how some people treated him. I didn't see what he did as being any different than what I have seen in prior or subsequent reports.

Re:I miss Bob's roadtrip reports - Fri, 06/22/12 10:28 AM
Well, I wish he'd come back.  I for one will be forever grateful to Bob for taking me around Chicago and introducing me to Al's Roast Beef on Taylor Street.  My Lord!  What an gastronomic experience!

The following year he came down to visit me, and at my request, he brought me a $50 supply of their delicious roast beef.  For something that is 300 miles away, his kindness was much appreciated.

Just before he left these boards, he was in the middle of posting a trip that took him from Illinois to Kentucky, where I took him around to various Roadfood venues (hitting 16 locations in four days).  And then he was off to Pennsylvania to visit Buffetbuster...when his posting stopped.  I'd like to someday see the rest of that trip.

I mis represented what I was saying........and apologize. I know people bullied him because he didnt show ENOUGH food. I always enjoyed his reports. And I missed a great opportunity to meet him when he was in Milwaukee. I didnt know he was so hurt by the activity toward him on this board. Again, I apologize. I, too would like to see him back.

Tony Bad
I "spoke" with Bob via email and IM often while this went on, and what ever the intent of comments may have been, the result was that he did feel bullied and was very upset and hurt by what went on. Personally, not speaking as a moderator, I thought it was shameful how some people treated him. I didn't see what he did as being any different than what I have seen in prior or subsequent reports.

Tony, how does it get to that point? I wasn't paying much attention to those threads at the time so I have no idea what actually was said, but I do wonder why the kinds of posts being talked about here were allowed to remain. I've never moderated a board so maybe I don't understand, but it seems to me that the goal of moderation is to further participation by those contributing to the mission, and eliminating participation by those who chase the good guys away.

In the short run, yes, traffic might be reduced if some very prolific posters were eliminated, but in the long run I think it would create much more fertile ground for the development of truly valuable posters.

Remember, though, it's circular.

Disclaimer: This is NOT directed at Tony Bad.

The biggest problem was/is,not only were/are certain posters allowed to run amuck, but when anyone tried/tries to rightfully put them in their place,THEIR posts were/are deleted. Just the way its going to be around here I guess unless there are some changes made. No big deal to me,I just spend my posting time elsewhere,as do many others now it would seem.

Bob drove from Chicago to Huntington, IN just to meet up with me at Nick's Kitchen for lunch. Is that not a true road fooder?

Let's see if I can smoke out ole Bob with this one.....

I know it's on his bucket list.  Right under the bridge is Mazur's Restaurant.  Bob, breakfast, lunch or dinner is on me.

I have been a long time lurker on this site and have seen people come and go and come back again.  If I were Bob I'd never post here again.  He took the time to share something he loved with all of us and was ridiculed for it.  There were those who started the fire and those who fanned the flames.  Thank goodness there are people on this site that manage to keep themselves above the fray while still managing to be productive members by turning out stellar trip reports and giving thoughtful and kind answers to questions some might deem repetitive.  Those people are why I visit this site often.  Bob was one of those people.
