What is South California?

 
It's the state south of North California that will be created when we finally split the state in 2 to stop you guys from stealing our water 
 
But as to the restaurant, where's the tripas on the menu? The cabeza?  The lengua?  The sesos?  Those offerings of an "authentic Southern California taco shop" (nobody would call a taqueria a "taco shop" in SoCal by the way) probably wouldn't go over in CT--not enough actual Mexicans.

Yeah, but it bothers me when people try to be "authentic" by demonstrating how unauthentic they are.  In one example from this menu, they offer "barbacoa" and define it as "brisket slowly cooked with chilies and spices".  I believe that while the term "barbacoa" can refer to a variety of barbecued meat in various hispanic cultures (and was where the term "barbecue" came from), in modern Mexico it normally refers to pit or spit-roasted MUTTON (sheep) or goat ("cabrito").
 
And "soyrizo"?  Please. 
 
Again, the thing is that anywhere in CA there are enough actual Mexicans (and non-Mexicans with a passing familiarity with Mexican culture including food) it's hard to get away with this stuff.

the food might be tasty, It just has little to do with the West Coast style of Mex. I've never called brisket  Barbacoa either.
 They seem to have forgotten any pig products too,
except for chorizo. Al Pastor and Pibil come home..
Oh well, as long as there's no real turtle on the menu I'm OK.

Last time I checked barbacoa was cows head wrapped in burlap and smoked in a pit for a few hours after which it was uncovered and laid out on a table and the meat was stripped and eaten with flour tortillas. At least thats what they do around Brownsville and San Antonio. And where's the menudo?

I think that's usually referred to as "barbacoa de cabeza" or some such rather than the unmodified word "barbacoa" but I could be wrong.  And I think the meaning of the term (again, unmodified) varies from one part of Mexico to another.  In northern Mexico near the US border, especially the Texas border, which is cattle country like Texas, they might just call the cow's head thing "barbacoa"--but not further south.  But one thing I suspect most Mexicans wouldn't expect when ordering "barbacoa" is brisket.

Right.  I'm feeling hyper-snarky and don't mean to be.  The food is probably very good.  What bothers me is not the food, which I've never tasted, but the attempt to convince locals it's "just like 'South California'".   I get bothered in the same way in CA when I go into a "New York Pizza" place or a "Memphis Barbecue" place.  Frankly, even the best of Bay Area pizza and "Q" is not much more than "pretty good" compared to the places in the locales where these regional specialties come from.  And people who have eaten "New York Pizza" in one of the New York (or CT) places we talk about a lot or barbecue in the Carolinas or Memphis are nearly always disappointed.  On the other hand, I go into such places because I'm not in New York or Memphis and it's the best I can get . . . and, like I said, pretty good.  That's kind of the way I'd tune my expectations for a taco or burrito at this place.
 
Oh, and there are exceptions. As I've mentioned, there is a place in SF that makes an oyster po-boy I'd put up against all but the very best in NOLA.  So maybe I'm wrong.
