It's that time of the year again, our local grocer has fresh Halibut on sale for $8.95 a lb for a half, I'll cut them into Filets. I bought 10lb of this two years ago and used the last piece about two months ago. I could not believe the fish lasted that long in the freezer, I blacken it and bake it in a Veracruz sauce, melts in your mouth and is real local and good for you......................PNWC

The last time I caught a halibut I had to shoot it with a Hi Standard Sentinel MK III .357 Magnum revolver to kill it.

I know they have overnight charters off the Oregon coast, they limit you to one Halibut. I would make sure that was one hell of a fish

I've fished for kings and cohos out of Astoria a few times. And out of Westport, Washington, too.

A friend of mine out of Minneapolis caught a 300lb+ off Homer a few years ago and he was kind enough to send me several fillets frozen in milk jugs.  I fried some, broiled some, and grilled some.  They were all outstanding.

I wonder what the record is for halibut in that area?  I have heard of some being caught that took hours to bring in because of their dead weight.  It took my friend several hours to reel his huge halibut in.

I got a Fishing ticket in Astoria once, I took my Son, who was 5 yrs old at the time fishing. The GW came over and asked for my Fishing License, I told him I didn't need a license I'm fishing in the ocean. He told me I was fishing in the Columbia river, I told him,I live on the Columbia river and this area is a hell of a lot bigger than the Columbia river near where I live. I told him we hooked into a Dungeness Crab, and I didn't think crabs lived in the Columbia river. Moral of the story, just because you can't see the other side of the river because of the fog, and your catching saltwater fish and crab, it may not be the ocean.....you will still get a ticket

Hey, lots of states now require licenses to fish in salt water. And as far as I'm concerned that's a good thing. It's about time salt water anglers paid their share for fisheries conservation.

i've seen 800 pounders at the docks in homer. spent alot of time there when i lived in Alaska in the 80's.

Years ago I visited my brother who was living in Anchorage, and fell in love with halibut.  We ate most of our meals at home, but had a lot of day trips and I ate halibut mostly as bar food, big chunks of it, beer battered, and served with a cocktail sauce, and I'd squeeze a little lemon on it, ate it every chance we had.  My parents visited, and my mother made a courtboullion from fillets my brother had in his freezer.  I bought it one time at a local grocery about a year ago, and it was great, but haven't seen it since.

We have found, after years of trying every way of preserving fish, that the best way is to wash them in cold water and lay them on a flat tray not touching and put them in the freezer until they are frozen separately. Then you just put them in a freezer bag or vacuum seal them depending on how long it will be before you eat them. This way you can just reach in and get what you want without having to thaw an entire pack of fish. They will keep for well over a year like this.

That would be a short beer. A regular glass would be 15 cents. And by the way, a lobster roll still cost 75 cents at Jimmies in the early 1960s. A pint of fried clams cost the same 75 cents then. And a dozen clams on the half shell cost half a buck. Split-grilled hot dogs were still 20 cents, up from 15 cents in the 1950s.

When you regulars go Rowan & Martin on me, I laugh like crazy.  As a tie-in, I do recall in my just-above youth, getting draft beer at some bar in Garfield, NJ, bar, for what I recall was about 35c for a 9-oz glass.  More important, they had regular cod-trips from Montauk, where they pumped steam thru the boat-railings to warm our hands.  Also recall my son calling for a gaff on a fluke trip decades ago, though the fish was well below Jersey's minimal size.  Told him the mate lost it, for a future death-bed revelation.  As you can deduct by now, am a senior-citizen, but love being web-savvy-enough to enjoy this website: John Fox and Ellen rule!

We looked at, but didn't buy the 2 lb package of Halibut at Costco last weekend....$29.95. Amazing how the price has climbed over the winter.

Al, it may be good, but it's not $29.95 good. The more I read this, the more I think I should order another 10 lbs. I could not believe, I ate the last piece of Halibut I bought two years ago, a few weeks ago. The Halibut was just as good as if I bought it a month ago and froze it. I keep it in the freezer for over a year at times and it's still perfect. For Halibut and King Salmon I purchase from  http://www.alaskacannery.com/  ask for Dick, super guy to work with.

That's not really a bad price for the 10lb package. I figure after knocking down the Halibut tail half, I got about 8lbs from a 10lb half, making it a 80% yield, 20% waste. the last time I bought a half a Halibut was two years ago. I told the Fish Monger we ate the last piece of his fish two months ago, making the last few pieces frozen for 20 months. I told my wife not to expect much, I would have to check out the Filet after it thawed, we were both impressed with the quality of a 20 month frozen fish filet. I will be making the family fresh batter dipped Halibut today from some small end and scrap pieces. the taste of the fresh Halibut does not come a close to frozen, the taste of the fresh is fantastic....................PNWC

Our local paper's food ads came out two days ago with halibut advertised as $5.99, I'm in shock, get to the store, there's two packages with 3 fillets in them each, about 4"x6", 1/2" thick, but the package is labeled $23.95 a pound.  So I say to the guy behind the counter, will they adjust the price at the register?  He never cracked a smile, then informs me it's $5.99 a fillet.

We caught quite a few halibut on our boat (no luck with the Mayor and Jan when they went out with us) in Prince William Sound.  Sometimes it was a matter of hours that we caught the fish and it wound up on the grill.  It was a gastronomic delight.  My friends used to say, "you're so lucky, it's $8.99 at the market".  Right.  Figure in the cost of the boat, the insurance, the dock fees, the FUEL, the gear, the bait, etc.......we figured that fish cost us somewhere around $65.00/lb.  But who cared?!  We had fun and we caught fish and it was delicious.

That's about the way I figure the cost of venison. When you add in everything, including the medical bills for the back after you've dragged your deer two miles out of the woods, not to mention all the other costs of a hunt and you're talking about $80-$100 a pound. I know walleye costs me at least $40 a pound, and salmon and steelhead -- you don't want to know.

Yeah Lisa, Welcome back. Nice to read your messages again.
We recall our day with you on the water. No luck fishing, but I will not forget you working that little one-burner stove in the boat-cabin making a great meal for all of us.
Here's the lunch we enjoyed at the Seaview Cafe in Hope, Alaska with Lisa a few years ago.

And here she is working hard in the tiny cabin of her boat.

Thanks Mr. Hoffman, Mayor and Sundancer.  Nice to be back.  Mr. Mayor, I thought you promised not to show that pic.....no, I guess it was the one of me patting the pooches, the Twin Peaks one. 
 
Anyway, after all the fishing I've done I have to say that catching a halibut is the best.  You can pretty much tell where the salmon and trout are but those darned halibut are lying on the ocean floor, at least 200 ft. down.  You have to have a lot of patience (and a lot of fuel as you tend to go farther and farther out in search thereof) but it pays off in the end if you actually get one.  We would go back to the dock in Whittier, fillet it, pack it in the cooler, drive home and fire up the grill.  Big slabs of grilled 'but with a little tomato-basil beurre blanc sauce and you think you died and went to heaven.

It was $18.99 in our local market yesterday and it did not look pristine.

At the Giant Eagle supermarket here it was $19.99. That's a drop from $22.99 about two weeks ago.

  The Photo in question is filed in the 'Greatest Roadfood Personalities' folder on my desktop. It is a classic and will remain in the dusty files as far as I am concerned.
    Some years back, 1988 or so, I caught a 47 lber in Salas Puedas Bay near Ensenada, Baja del Norte. One of the deckhands fillet it for me into some wonderful 'steaks' . That is only only Halibut "keeper" I have ever caught.
 
A quick side note. All is well. The Doc says he thinks he got it "ALL".   Home safely.

Well, you see there are these twin peaks that we always used as markers for heading back to the harbor after a day of fishing. As you probably know, sometimes in the northern lattitudes compasses can go a little crazy.

Stick to the compasses......you'll have better luck with the halibut.  Those fish are not partial to peaks.

Janet still has a 'life-goal' of a Halibut fishing expedition to Alaska. I don't know if we can ever get back there. But she sure wants to try, so I will keep the plans near the top of the 'to-do' list.
