Tucson, Arizona - Where can I find a Bologna Ring? - Fri, 04/8/11 8:10 PM

I've searched high and low at the major food suppliers (Fry's, Bashas, Albertons, Walmart, etc.) here in Tucson, AZ and either I'm completely blind or no one carries Bologna Ring.  I used to get them at Meijer in the Midwest until I moved here.  I've got a hankering for some homemade ham salad sandwiches and the most basic ingredient that my mother's recipe calls for is nowhere to be found.  This is a city of over a million people with all sorts of nationalities, so I figure a Bologna Ring has to be somewhere.

You're looking for Trail Bologna? Or, as we used to say when I was bumming around the country, "A ring of red, a loaf of bread and an onion.

By the way, Meijer sells Troyer Trail Bologna.

Hi Vikki, I'm here in the West(Oregon) also.
My go to place for Midwestern meats is Grocery Outlet.
I have seen ring bologna there fairly often.
Even if they don't normally stock it, it might be on their order list.
I get my liverwurst at ours, as  it is mostly non-existent here in the PNW.

I get them at Fry's all the time. Usually Boars Head brand. They're not in the regular meat cases. They're usually in the Speciality cases with the cheeses near the deli section or wherever they stock their Boars Head meats.. Same Bashas. Albertsons carries Dietz & Watson brand and they have them in the same places.
Sprouts Farmers Market in Oro Valley also carries Boars Head Meats and should have them. All the Sprouts here have them.
EDIT:
Here's a place that makes their own!!@!! The Guy's from Wisconsin!

Those would be awfully expensive to grind up for ham salad.

SO???? Ring Bologna is no more expensive than other cold meat or ham and if that's the way Momma made it, then who are we to think otherwise?

I think the problem here is one of semantics.  In the deli at our stores, we made and sold (genuine) "ham salad", but we also made something that we called "sandwich spread" (a.k.a "ham salad" in some other stores).  The "sandwich spread" was made of the end pieces and scraps of all our sliced meats we offered in the deli, while the "ham salad" was made strictly out of ham.  The ham salad I make at home now for myself is 100% Hormel canned chunk ham.

No semantics problem. She's actually making a ring bologna salad and calling it ham salad. If that's what she calls it then that's OK. We understand what she means.  I'd be interested to learn what else goes in it.

Well, except that the ring bologna is usually $1.99 or $2.99
at Grocery Outlet versus I imagine $5.00 or more a Lb. for Boars Head or Dietz and Watson.

Buy the time you buy a bone-in ham (Boneless would be even more expensive), factor in the cost of cooking it, take into account shrinkage due to cooking, remove the weight of the bone and the trimmed fat and end up with a net amount of trimmed, boned meat--- the cost will be more than ring bologna.

When Honeybaked stopped selling ham salad (at least here), I started making my own using a pound or so of their ham.  Talk about good.   But I wouldn't mind using some ring bologna if I had it.

I'm beginning to think you like to argue just to argue. I never said anything about ham.
You must not like grocery outlet either.
My mother made ham salad for decades, both out of bologna and ham.
Always mayo, celery, salt and pepper. Sometimes onions and  pimentos added.

Meijer is where I used to get Bologna Ring before moving to Tucson.  Too bad Meijer is nowhere to be found outside the Midwest.

I'll check out Grocery Outlet and look at Fry's again.  Today is shopping day!

Update:  Found one at Fry's!  I've checked several times in that precise spot and this time I found one.  In fact, it was the last Ring Bologna in stock.  I don't think they keep many on hand.

Now that you've found it I have to ask why you can't use regular bologna instead of ring bologna to make your salad?

That's because you said HAM Salad. HAM Salad is made with HAM. Bologna Salad is made with Bologna. Chicken Salad is made with Chicken. Tuna Salad is made with Tuna. Etc, Etc.
And we don't have Grocery Outlets down here so I can't make any comments about them.

She could but she said it's her Momma's recipe and you don't mess with Momma's recipe.

The difference between $5 Plus for Mom's Ham salad and $1.99 ring balogna isnt really a choice, Moms memory is really worth the good stuff.

Well, PNWCHEF-the best "ham salad" is from bologna in the old days.In the deli I ran, there was ham salad, and "ham salad" Patrons knew the difference. Lucky for you with the real thing. And, Mr. Hoffman, much easier to cut/grind ring bologna. You guys are being way too picky. Do YOU have a recipe-of your own, of course.Nothing copied off the internet. And if you dont, then you have NO idea what "Moms" recipe, is all about. This is not a good old boy discussion.

I not only do not have a recipe of my own, I've never been able to stand ham salad made with ham or ham salad made with bologna.

Midwest thing, my friends. Maybe you know nothing of the sorts, as you are embroiled in old memories of the east coast, of which you now know old things about. I am surprised at your intolerence of food.

I would suggest that you have a conversation with someone born in the 30's. My Mom reserved ham ( read that we couldnt afford it) to special occasions.

Sorry Ann, but we had ham salad all the way back east in Connecticut when I was a kid. And I've lived here in Ohio since 1971. I have been exposed to ham salad -- and here in Ohio Bologna salad, too -- for a lot of years. I am intolerant only of those foods that I happen to dislike, and that's never been based on place of origin.

Glendale, Mesa, and East Phoenix have Grocery Outlets.

The Grocery Outlet web site only shows 2 locations in AZ. One in Glendale on Bell Rd and one in Tucson on Speedway. The one in Glendale is a 75-80 mile round trip. About $14.00 in Gas to go there. No wonder I've not seen them here.

As with the coleslaw discussion, I'm suddenly getting a hankering for ham salad.  I just know I'll whip up a batch this weekend.  Sometimes these discussions really do me in.
