I believe JRPfeff posted something about this place earlier but I couldn't find it so I'm adding a new post.
This place has the best BBQ I've ever eaten!
We journeyed to Buckeye to watch our Granddaughter compete in a Volleyball tournament. I remember JRPfeff's description of the place so it was definitely on our "must try" list.
Buckeye AZ is about 35 miles West of Phoenix, just a few miles south of I-10 on Monroe AV aka Maricopa County Route 85.  It's a small farming community with a very quaint downtown. The amazing story about how this Memphis born & raised gentleman wound up in Buckeye is highlighted in the History section of his web site. Be sure to read it. It's a story about a man and his passion and his journey from Memphis, through the Marine Corps and his landing in Buckeye.
Believe me, his passion is reflected in his Ribs, Pulled Pork & Beef, Smoked Links and Side Dishes. I had a combo plate- Ribs & Links, Coleslaw and BBQ beans. The ribs were beautifully smoked, meaty, tender and slid right off the bone. The Links were also nicely smoked and tasty. The meats were served slathered in a fantastic BBQ Sauce. A sweet sauce with a little tang and zip to it. The next time we go, I'll ask for the sauce on the side only because I prefer my ribs dry. The slaw was a mustard based slaw, the Beans were cooked with the BBQ sauce and very tender and both were good. My Bride had a Pulled Beef Sandwich. It was loaded with very tasty beef and sauce. She ate it with a fork and couldn't finish it so I had to help her out. It was lean, moist and perfectly smoked.
His restaurant is small, clean and friendly. Seats about 25 people plus there's outdoor seating as well. He and his helper joked around with us and we had a good time. The Wall is adorned with pictures from his outstanding career in the Marines. I'm not sure but I think he was a Gunny Sgt.
It's a 110 mile roundtrip from my house in the East Valley, (Gilbert, AZ), to his place, but I'll gladly make the trip until I can convince him to open a place on the East side of the Valley. It's the Best BBQ I've eaten anywhere.
If you use Interstate 10 West, you can get there from Downtown Phoenix in about 30 minutes or less in non-rush hour traffic. If you're traveling from PHX to LA,CA or vice versa, It's worth the stop.

I heartily recommend it. I'd stop in on my way into or out of town. It's about 3-4 miles south of I-10. Exit at Rt 85 South. Otherwise, it's about a 100 mile round trip from the Scottsdale area.
Don't know how much time you have but here's a fun place in North Scottsdale. Outdoor dining on picnic tables, a burger joint with Music and Campfires in the evening.   http://greasewoodflat.net/

Kewl. So which other places do you suggest (favorites as opposed to just listing). From what I've seen your taste is pretty similar to mine so what out of the list would be the 2 or 3 must-gos that you suggest? Do you think that place DD&D suggests (Roberto's) is not worth it? I'll be there for 3 days but probably half the meals will be fam/friends type things. That leaves about 3 meals to dive into. Count the BBQ place and that leaves me two. And what about the pizza (think it's Pizzeria Bianco?).

As I've said many times on numerous threads, IMHO, Pizzeria Bianco is overrated. Most disagree with me. Here's one of my reviews. "Been here 4 times. 1 by my choice and 3 by out of towners who dragged me there kicking and screaming because they read the hype on this place. Generally, I'll wait 30 minutes or so for good food but the wait here is ridiculous, 1 to 3 hours! The tables are cramped, The wait staff is indifferent and the pizza is average for a wood-fired pizza. Oh, I forgot. The prices are outrageous!"
It's a nice, old quaint place in downtown Phoenix, but the drawbacks outweigh the ambiance of the buildings and the area. Since I'm in the minority on this place, if you don't mind waiting, give it a try. Be there about an hour before they open to give yourself a better chance of getting seated early. They have a wine bar in a house next door, so you have plenty of time to get sloshed!
As far as other places, tell me what you would enjoy and if you're thinking about Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner and I'll respond with some "Jim's Favorites"
I understand Roberto's has changed hands so I can't comment on it's current status food-wise. Prior, I'd rate it a 5 out of 10. For similar fare, I recommend Los Reyes de la Torta. They don't have a web site but here's there Urbanspoon listing with recommendations. It's also closer to Scottsdale than Roberto's.

We were there at 5:00 PM on a Saturday and they had rib tips available. Can't speak to their quality, but if they are as good as the regular ribs, they'll be great.

Foodbme - I'm glad you liked the restaurant, but as I told you in an email, I thought the food was OK at best and I WILL NEVER GO BACK! If you want barbecue in the West Valley, go to Fritzi's instead.

The City of Buckeye is more interested in harassing drivers than in helping businesses in their community.  Anyone going to any restaurant in Buckeye had better obey every traffic law to the letter.  Enforcement is absolute and warnings are not given. I do not do business in Buckeye any more.

I guess the town needs the revenue that lawbreakers like you generate! Could your viewpoint of Memphis Best BBQ be tainted by your unpleasant experience with the Local Federalies??? I thought it was quite good . And I obeyed all the Local, County, State, Federal and International ordinances!  I interpret your comment never to go back as directed more against the local law enforcement as opposed to Memphis Best BBQ. He also has a location in Laveen. You could try that one.
Going home, we took Scenic Buckeye Rd all the way into Phoenix. There were 2 Motorcycle Cops on Buckeye in Avondale, but that's the only ones we saw.

Foodbme - I cook my own barbecue and occasionally compete.  I would not serve the nasty ribs he sells.  His pork was pretty good, but not to my standards.  His beans were good.

Considering the place is out of the way for me living in the West Valley, I see no reason for someone to make an hour-plus drive from Phoenix or Scottsdale to eat there.  Especially with the chance of $150 service charge being assessed for driving in Buckeye.  Its not just me, my realtor complained about a ticky-tack citation yesterday.

Personally, I'd prefer places that might reflect AZ local food. Pizza will be out-------sounds like that is no better than I can find here in SoCal. Sounds like Roberto's is out too------I definitely have exceptional Mexican places I go to so if it's not great and unique, I'll pass. There used to be a place in Old Scottsdale that had Navajo Tacos and sopapillas but I couldn't find it last time I was there. That place also had an excellent pozole. I know TexAz is definitely on my list for either lunch or dinnner so I am flexible.

Fry Bread House
4140 N 7th Ave
Phoenix, AZ 85013

They're supposed to be the best makers of Fry Bread in the Valley. They have Fry Bread Tacos & Dessert Tacos and other dishes using fry bread. I've not eaten there but they have a big reputation. Nothing fancy but good.  http://www.azcentral.com/thingstodo/dining/147847349148

For Southwestern, Cartwrights in Cave Creek that I listed above and Renegade Canteen. Both are dinner only and a little upscale casual.

Another Good Downscale Casual place I enjoy for Southwestern is Carlsbad Tavern in Scottsdale. New Mexico style food includig a Green Chile Cheesburger. They also have Pozole. Lunch & Dinner. http://www.carlsbadtavern.com/

This may be the place you were thinking of in Scottsdale. Don't know anything about it or if it still exists. The map says it's right off the 101 Freeway at McDowell. Not too far from Casino Arizona.
Native Hands
8806 McDowell Rd., Scottsdale 480-675-9443

Green chili stew with tortilla or fry bread understandably is a best seller. Pima Taco a folded-over fry bread stuffed with beans and cheese a Pima taco combination adds red or green chili. The house special, with the ground beef jazzed by sizzling jalapenos, tomato and onion and scooped with warm corn tortilla chips. A simple basket of fry bread, finally, fry bread dessert with honey and powdered sugar.

I LOVE the Wigwam Resort! It's on the West side of town in Litchfield Park. It was the first resort in AZ. Old, but upgraded and classic Southwestern. For a Southwestern meal.
Arizona Kitchen, Wigwam Resort
300 E. Wigwam Blvd, Litchfield Park 623-935-3811
www.wigwamresort.com

With the help of a historian of Native American foods, the chef here has put together a bold Southwestern menu. Appetizers such as blue corn piki rolls, stuffed with capon and goat cheese, and the wild boar Anasazi bean chile give you an indication of what's to come. Entrées include grilled sirloin of buffalo and venison medallions in a blackberry-zinfandel cocoa sauce. For dessert, try the chile-spiked ice cream in the striking turquoise "bowl" of hardened sugar. It's worth the 20-minute drive from downtown Phoenix to the Wigwam Resort.

Start off with honeydew melon soup with scallop and halibut ceviche, set off with candied kumquats. Then move on to tribally raised buffalo with raspberry and tomatillo salsa. Finish up with warm fry bread topped with Kahlua ice cream. Open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday, reservations are recommended

Native Hands sounds really interesting----I'll have to see if they are still around. That sounds exactly what I'm looking for. The place I was referring to was in one of the shopping areas on a corner in Old Scottsdale, so I don't think it's Native Hands. I seem to recall it being across from a museum around 3rd or so.

Don't know if you know it but Rawhide moved from N. Scottsdale to S. Phoenix. It's now down just below the Rt 202, I-10 intersection near Wild Horse Pass Casino. I don't recall seeing anything resembling a Fry Bread place in Old Scottsdale. There's a place called "The Mission" in that area, but I don't think they have Fry Bread. It's more upscale. http://www.themissionaz.com/index.php

It's much the same as it was in Scottsdale. They moved most of the buildings down there and built some other ones. They still have the gunslinger shootouts, the wagon rides, Campfire cookouts and of course, the gift shops! They added a Rodeo Ring. It's actually bigger and better. The food's pretty good too. It's right next to Firebird Raceway and the Wild Horse Pass Resort & Casino and Bondurant High Performance Driving School.
It's a big complex down there.

I'm sure they can accommodate you. They have some separate facilities that that they use for groups. Lots of businesses use them. Another place that is Western Themed and accommodates Groups is Rustlers Rooste. It's a steakhouse with indoor and outdoor accommodations. It's right at I-10 and Baseline above and behind The Arizona Grand Resort. On a hill. Nice view of the city.

I still remember my visit to Memphis Best. I mentioned to the owner that his was the best barbecue in the Southwest, comparable to my favorite place in L.A., JayBee's House of Barbecue in Gardena. As soon as I mentioned that his eyes lit up. "That's my family's place"' he said. I told him his Aunt Beverly made the best BBQ. He sadly told me she had recently passed away. We then discussed his cousins, the Neely's of Interstate BBQ. I have that on my list of "must go" places anytime I visit Phoenix.

The Wigwam has changed the names of their restaurants. Arizona Kitchen is now Litchfield's. It higher priced but not outrageous. I had excellent Colorado lamb chops there.Probably the best fine dining in the West Valley.

Waddell's Longhorn Corral is my favorite place in the area.

The funny thing is: The thread title cut off the "AZ", and I live in Ohio, so I when I saw "Memphis Best BBQ in Buckeye" I assumed the next word was "state" and that's why I clicked on this thread. As it turns out the new location is on the same street as the ballpark in Goodyear.

The Reds-Indians stadium complex is really nice.  They have a lot of good options for ballpark food there.

There is a pizza place just south of the ballpark on Estrella Parkway that may be the best in the West Valley.  Taste of Italy is owned by an Italian gentleman by way of Brooklyn, and there really isn't anything to compare his pizzas to in the area.

Regions of U.S. Cotton Production - Directories & Buyers Guide - Cotton Council International

Regions of U.S. Cotton Production  (From 21,100 square miles of farmland in 17 states springs Upland and American Pima cotton—diverse, top quality fiber to fit any customer’s needs.)

Upland cotton is grown in the U.S. in four major geographic areas: the Southeast, Mid-South, Southwest and West, collectively called the Cotton Belt.
The Southeastern growing area includes the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. This region’s production averages about 22 percent of the total Upland production. Planting is from early April to early June. The average staple length is 34.1 thirty-seconds of an inch. Harvest generally runs from late September to early December.

About 34 percent of the total Upland crop is grown in the Mid-South, which spans the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee. Planting begins in mid-April and continues through early June. The average staple length is 34.7 thirty-seconds of an inch. Harvest occurs from early September to early December.
The Southwest region is comprised of Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. This region accounts for about 35 percent of the Upland crop. The average staple length is 36 thirty-seconds of an inch. Planting in south Texas begins in late February, with harvesting running from late July until mid-September. In the rest of the region, planting begins in mid-April and harvest lasts from mid-October through December.
The states of Arizona, California and New Mexico comprise the West region, which accounts for about 9 percent of total Upland production. The average staple length is 36.6 thirty-seconds of an inch. Planting begins in early April and is usually completed by early June. Harvest runs from late September through early December.

Thanks for the tip on this place...we're coming to spring training next month and one of the places we're stopping is the Reds'/Indians' complex in Goodyear.
I've always wanted to try Interstate BBQ -- looks like this is pretty similar to that.

Don't know if you've been out here before, but if you're a BB Fan & have time, be sure to visit the Salt River Fields At Talking Stick.
http://saltriverfields.com/
And the Cubbies at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa. It will be torn down soon. It's one of the original Cactus League fields. End of an Era. A new stadium being built.
http://www.hohokamstadium.com/

We're Cubs fans and did the Mesa thing last time. I'm glad we did it but it's everything bad about the Wrigley experience without the positives.

We're going to Salt River twice for a Red-AZ game and a Cubs-Rockies game. We're also going to Texas' park in Surprise and the World Baseball Classic at whatever they're calling Bank One Ballpark this week.

While at Talking Stick Fields, go across the 101 Freeway to the Talking Stick Resort & Casino. There's a Cajun Food place in there that's supposed to serve pretty good Cajun Fare. I've not been there yet.

Cooperstown was on the list anyway (the Bourdain episode made me want to go), but thanks for the tip about Lo Lo's. I'd seen it mentioned on here a couple of times but didn't really its proximity to the baseball field. I'd really like to give that place a try.

If you go on LoLo's web site and click on the map's Satellite View, you'll see Chase Field with the roof open at the corner of Jefferson & 7th St.
Look down & Left a little bit (South & West) and you'll see LoLo's at the corner of South Central & W. Yuma Streets

I just called there for you and got their recorded message since they normally close on Sunday & Monday's.
Sure sounds like they're still in operation in Goodyear however, they did close the Buckeye location when they moved to Goodyear.

It seems like if you were going to fold up shot, doing so right before spring training when your restaurant is 1/2 mile from a ballpark would be ill advised.

I'll take the number with and make sure they're open before we go. Thanks.

They're supposed to be the best makers of Fry Bread in the Valley. They have Fry Bread Tacos & Dessert Tacos and other dishes using fry bread. I've not eaten there but they have a big reputation. Nothing fancy but good.  http://www.azcentral.com/thingstodo/dining/147847349148

For Southwestern, Cartwrights in Cave Creek that I listed above and Renegade Canteen. Both are dinner only and a little upscale casual.
http://www.renegadecanteen.com/food-and-bar.html
Another Good Downscale Casual place I enjoy for Southwestern is Carlsbad Tavern in Scottsdale. New Mexico style food includig a Green Chile Cheesburger. They also have Pozole. Lunch & Dinner. http://www.carlsbadtavern.com/

Your call on Carlsbad Tavern was a very good one. We had a party of five looking for good local fare and everyone found something they liked. Plus the portions and prices were excellent.

I got the Carne Adovado for $12 and couldn't even come close to finishing it. It was overflowing with meat.

Thanks for the recommendation!

Sorry for the delay -- saw your question last week but wanted to make sure I had a couple of minutes to respond, and that hasn't happened often lately.

Yes, we did get to Memphis Best. I was very happy with it.

Our dining experience was made very complicated because my dad and his wife blew a tire en route to meeting us there, so first we sat in the restaurant and were tortured by the smell and then we had to actually eat sort of fast after we found out they were rescued by the rental company but would not be joining us.

My wife and I got the sampler. The pulled beef and the hot met were amazing. The beef tasted like excellent brisket, and I've never had hot met that good before.

The ribs were among the best I've had too. Pretty funny -- we had baseball jerseys on and were trying to be neat, so I saw a guy at an adjacent table take his fork and strip the meat off, and I did the same. It was a plastic fork and required very little effort to pull the meat off the bones cleanly.

The sauce was a little spicier than I thought, not that there's anything wrong with that, but I was expecting more of a molasses-based sauce and it was thinner and hotter than I expected.

We also did...is it Don and Charlie's? The Giants' hang out in Scottsdale. My dad had heard about it and I actually had not, and I called most of the shots that week so I didn't want to say no and turn into the food nazi. The shrimp were really good there.

And of course we did Chompie's. Twice.

The thing about Phoenix is I've eaten at a lot of places and I've never come away thinking I got ripped off. Nowhere has overly steep prices and the portions are normally huge.

I agree, Bonk, Don and Charlies was great. I've been there twice now. Their chopped steak grilled "Chicago style" has the flavor of all the prime rib, NY and other cuts they chop into it. And I have never had a place put a more perfect char on a piece of meat yet have the inside a nice medium rare.

The landlord exercised his right of distraint for non-payment of rent. The place is empty. There's a notice on the door from the landlord.
