The funniest Comic Strip of all time - Wed, 05/4/11 5:37 PM
Had to be "Herman",  by Jim Unger, The Schlumpy guy always on the short end of the stick, henpecked, downtroden, browbeaten, the look on the face, faces, usually said it all, the caption always hilarious. Is it still published, not in my local or the Washington Post. What's your favorite?

I always enjoyed the old Hey, B.C. strips by Johnny Hart.  Simple, but profound.

Hager the Horrible-----people always say I look like him.  Tremendous
resemblance.  Especially between the ears.

I have an appointment with a podiatrist next week for mine.

My favorite was Momma by Mel Lazarus.  I think it's about mine.

I wonder whether a podiatrist could do anything about my plantar faciitis.

Michael, I think you should see a botanist about your plantar faciitis.you might have fungus on your bark.

Nope. It's not my bark that has fungus.

And just to beat anyone to it. it's not my bite, either.

Your plantar faciitis can be relieved by wearing shoes with and air cushion in the heal.

Rockports gave me mine, Rebok DMXs took it away.

Both the same company.

Of comic strips now in  re-runs, it would have to be Calvin and Hobbes, expecially the snowmen series.  If you have ever seen them, you will know what I am talking about.

For current comics, it would probably be a tie between Dinette Set, Speed Bump, and Non Sequitur.

(I do check out 20 different comics to get my chuckles daily.)

Does Tony Lama put air cushions in his boots?

This site went from funny comics to toenails and warts once Michael was let loose.  Someone has to keep a sharp eye on him.

I loved Andy Capp the Little Limey who had a mighty thirst.

By the way, it was chewingthefat who brought up those disgusting toenails. Must be a fetish.

Whenever we'd go down to New York to visit my grandmother in the Bronx she'd have a couple of months worth Sunday comics from all the New York papers waiting for me.  In nice weather, when I couldn;t get to Van Cortland Park, I'd go out on her apartment balcony with all the comics and not have to listen to the "grownups." There was a White Castle a few blocks away under the El on Broadway, and my uncle could always be counted on to get me there for a few hamburgers.

Almost everything in Mad Magazine was funny.  Do you remember the fold-ins (Mad's version of Playboy's centerfolds)?

My alltime favortie-"Outland".  Bill the cat , best cartoon character ever.

The Far Side also.
I giggle when thinking of this cartoon:
Cows standing up in a field, reading the newspaper, smoking a cigarette, etc, "Car!!!), next cows are down on all fours, grazing, car goes by, then cows are again standing up in a field, reading the newspaper, smoking a cigarette.

Never once opened a copy of MAD.  The Police Gazette was big in the barber shop.  Then ESQUIRE of course.  The PETTY GIRL was looked forward to eagerly and looked at wantingly---and many were on the inside of locker doors in barracks and ships.  See the movie PATTON for verification.

I think I finally caught THE MICHAEL in an error though Chewy-------
BROADWAY never goes into the BRONX----The IRT 7th Ave goes right up to YONKERS ---Manhattan all the way.  Van Courtland Park, where I ran many and many a mile, is in Manhattan also.

With age comes forgetfulness, I guess. My grandmother's apartment was on Bailey Avenue in the Bronx,  just a couple of blocks away from Broadway, which runs parallel to it, and Bailey runs right into Van Cortland Park, which abuts Broadway. The Major Deegan Expressway runs between Bailey and Broadway, but it wasn't there when I used to visit.

The IRT 7th Ave line stops well short of Yonkers line.  Probably by a mile or two.

My fave toons are Beetle Bailey and Blondie.

I'd be inclined to say 'Calvin & Hobbes' and 'The Far Side', but I'll also toss in one from way back, 'Smokey Stover' - just nonstop zany with some pun or visual gag in the background of every panel...made of funny, as the kids say today, I assume.

This conversation reminds me of a system that I used when going onsite for contract work. I called it the "Dilbert Rule": The quality of the management of a company was inversely proportional to the number of Dilbert strips hanging on walls.

I too loved the Far Side and remember vividly the strip you describe. My all time favorite one though was a single panel showing a man from the back aiming his arrowed bow at a young boy with the head the size of a watermelon, upon which was perched an apple whose size is greatly diminished by the kid's gourd. The caption went something like this; Unknown to most historians, William Tell had a younger, less fortunate son named Warren.
 LMAO

The one that has made me laugh the most is Life in Hell. I gave a friend of mine the Big Book of Hell for Christmas last year. Occassionally I'll see Matt Groening slip Akbar and Jeff or Bongo the one eared rabbit into a Simpsons episode.

Calvin & Hobbes, I always loved the sarcasm of Calvin and the wild imagination. Now that my son is 9, it amazes me the similarity of the two!

To avoid spoilers, I won't give the title, but I remember seeing a movie where one scene reminded me so much of Calvin & Hobbes that I immediately realized that one of the main characters was a figment of another's imagination (those who have seen the movie in question will immediately know which one I am talking about).

When I was a kid:  Katzandjammer Kids (BTW: my feet are just fine), Life with Father (Jiggs & Maggie), and L'il Abner.

In the '70's and '80's when he was just political (apart from being over-the-top partisan political) Doonesbury was hilarious.  (I think that when his politics rendered him unable to find humor in the whole Clinton-Lewinsky thing Trudeau lost his senses of irony and humor).

And then came and, sadly, went: The Far Side.

These days I just watch the news - what could be funnier than the whole Weiner's weiner imbroglio?
