Pittsburgh Eat and Greet: Max's Allegheny Tavern, May 20

buffetbuster and I have agreed that it's time to have another gathering of Roadfooders around Pittsburgh. And now it's time to reveal our cunning plan to the world:
We're gathering at Max's Allegheny Tavern at 7pm on Friday, May 20.
(Okay, it's probably not as cunning as the plan that killed Osama bin Laden. But it's cunning enough for our needs.)

Max's Allegheny Tavern traces its roots back to 1884, though it's changed hands several times along the way. We like the German food and the gracious setting. (The bar area with the mechanical band is not so gracious.)

Please let us know if you can join us with a post to this forum or a note to me or buffetbuster. We hope to see you then!

Cunningly done Ralph

Located on Pittsburgh's North Side, just a few blocks from Allegheny General Hospital, Max's Allegheny Tavern has hosted several birthdays in my family over the years.  I can recommend the good food, fun atmosphere and they have long been known to have the coolest men's room in the city!  And how can you not love a place that offers six kinds of schnitzels?

Even though the turnouts in the past have been small, we have always had lots of fun on these Roadfood get togethers.  We would love to see GeoNit, KennyJoe, lleechef and any other Roadfooders in the Pittsburgh area join us.

Oh, and I should mention that Max's also have plenty of other non-German options on the menu, too.

Count me in!  If this is the same place that used to be Max and Erma's, I was there many years ago.

Can I see the men's room???

It was indeed Max and Erma's at one time; it changed after a dispute with the Max and Erma's chain.

I'm willing to keep watch while you scout out the men's room.
I'm not sure that I agree that it's the coolest men's room in the city, though; compare, for example, the men's room at Jerome Bettis Grille, which was one of the ten finalists in 2008's "America's Best Restroom" contest. ( http://www.wtae.com/r/16510416/detail.html )

Ralph is right that the men's room at Jerome Bettis Grill 36 is even cooler.  But, in the old days, if you needed to make a call, you better be a man, because the pay phone was in the men's room.  No idea what happened if a lady needed to make a call.

Glad to hear that lleechef will be joining us that night!

I should be able to make it, but I will be by myself because Susan will be away in Phoenix. The last time we went to Max's the service was atrocious. I trust that was a deviation and a good time will be had by all on the 20th.
Ralph - I think the dispute between Max & Erma's (the Pittsburgh tavern) and Max & Erma's (the Columbus chain) was relatively cordial. When the latter decided to move into Pittsburgh, it understood there would be a problem and wrote the current Max's a big check when it agreed to change its name.

BTW i thought the Steelers had natural turf on their playing field to give their cheerleaders something to graze on during the week.

It's been a bad week for writing, so here's just a smattering of unedited food pictures:

Lori and I ordered the sausage and cheese plate for the table:
IMG_2557 by Ralph Melton, on Flickr

GeoNit ordered the calamari:

The bread basket, with Max's relish.

buffetbuster's einlauf soup.
IMG_2560 by Ralph Melton, on Flickr

My hassenpfeffer. I haven't had hassenpfeffer for many years. I quite liked the flavor, particularly the flavor of the red wine sauce. I did not care for the many small bones, though.
IMG_2561 by Ralph Melton, on Flickr

Lori's roast pork with peas and a potato pancake. Sadly, we forgot our leftovers.
IMG_2563 by Ralph Melton, on Flickr

lleechef's sausage platter:

Kenny Joe's weisswurst, spaetzle, applesauce:
IMG_2566 by Ralph Melton, on Flickr

Mariton's shrimp and scallops, German potato salad and potato pancake.
IMG_2567 by Ralph Melton, on Flickr

Mariton and buffetbuster shared the Black Forest Cake:
IMG_2568 by Ralph Melton, on Flickr

Lori and I each had a piece of the lemon cream cheese pie. It was luscious and not cloyingly sweet, with an excellent shortbread crust. We should have shared a piece instead of each having our own.

From the conversation, I particularly remembered Kenny Joe telling us of his son's efforts to conquer a Man vs. Food-style challenge to eat fifteen dozen oysters at Acme Oyster House. It reminded me of this anecdote from Brillat-Savarin's The Physiology of Taste, which I've been reading recently:

ANECDOTE

In 1798 I was at Versailles as a commissary of the Directory, and frequently met M. Laperte, greffier of the count of the department. He was very fond of oysters, and used to complain that he had never had enough.

I resolved to procure him this satisfaction, and invited him to dine with me on the next day.

He came. I kept company with him to the tenth dozen, after which I let him go on alone. He managed to eat thirty-two dozen within an hour for the person who opened them was not very skilful.

In the interim, I was idle, and as that is always a painful state at the table, I stopped him at the moment when he was in full swing. "Mon cher," said I, "you will not to-day eat as many oysters as you meant—let us dine." We did so, and he acted as if he had fasted for a week.

To be perfectly honest, neither Mariton or I liked our food.  The German potato salad was good and the black forest cake was fine, but I didn't like anything else on my plate.  The samples I had of the sausage from Ralph's appetizer and lleechef's entree were much better.
