What goes on your fries?

We eat our french fries with ketchup and extra light mustard (heavily mixed with mayo).  Pretty standard among locals here, a tradition started by our old local Dairy Queen decades ago.  It never dawned on me that people elsewhere don't do that until I went away for college.   My first exposure to culture shock.

Alot of people in my neck of the woods like a ketchup/mayo mix. Also ranch dressing. Bob and I prefer tartar sauce, which dates back to a restaurant named Arthur Treachers Fish and Chips, which to my knowledge, is no longer open...

I like my plain - as I've said I'm not much of a condiment user - maybe a little ketchup on the side.  I've noticed friends and co workers I've eaten with use lots of ketchup - ranch dressing - cheese sauce - tartar sauce - bbq sauce - steak sauce and marinara to drown their fries in.
It's all about what you like.

Thanks,my friend 6star. May not be the same as we remember, but will check them out if in the areas you sent. Funny thing, Bob and I loved Big Boy, and as we were literally next door to one in Indiana recently, just didnt go. I guess our memories dont warrant a visit. Our loss.

Just a little ketchup, and malt vinegar if available, if the fries are a side dish. I have been known to make a big plate of chili cheese or nacho fries as a main course for myself though.

Once I "crossed the river to the Jersey side", I noticed that almost every person under 30 in our local diners eats their fries covered in both gravy and cheese.  They call this dish "Disco Fries".  It looks good, but I just don't eat like that any more.

In the Southwest they substitute Chili for Gravy and call it Chili-Cheese Fries!

I sorta got where I do not like any fries that are served me except those that are genuinely cut from a potato and served hot.  I do not care for any fry including mine that is cold or cool.  Usually ketchup, thousand island or tartar sauce works and even some type of hot sauce.

I really like my own fries with the skin on and served hot and fresh.

I prefer beef gravy... even if I'm not getting a hot roast beef sandwich, if I'm in a diner I'll order a bowl of it to dip my fries in.
This is one of my favorite places to go for that... my mom used to go there for fries and gravy when she was a teenager:

When I lived in the north of France we would go to Mons, Belgium on Sundays and get french fries with sauce "Americaine".  Kind of a spicy, tomato tartar sauce.  Delicious.  I also like chipotle mayo on fries.

Potatoes are always great in any form and fashion.  I always enjoy them.  I thin slice them and put them in the fryer with oil and onions and peppers and let it rip.  It takes a while to get them brown.  Sometimes I put them in the microwave and let them cook so they will fry faster.

Nothing better than fried potatoes.  Unfortunately due to my age, I cannot eat so much of them anymore.

    Usually just salt.
Malt Vinegar at times if I'm in the mood.
Unless I'm someplace with seriously good Belgian-style fries, then frite sauce or curry mayo.

    Gravy? What kind of gravy?

In NJ diners, it's just gravy.  It's brown and thick and more than likely includes some kind of a commercial mix.

Straight Mayo on a thin and crispy fry (steak and shake)
or on the big fat fries like Wendy's used to be

Ketchup with Ranch mixed on the crinkle cut things from WM.

on the skin on fresh cut kind, I love the malt vinegar

so i guess it depends on the fry and the mood and the condiments at hand

However you choose to eat your fries, never with crispy coating   BOYCOTT any restaurant that would dare serve such blasphemy!
French fries should be 100% potato only fried in oil, served hot with REGULAR salt  (not seasoned salt).

I like with vinegar, ketchup, A-1 or sweet and sour sauce.
    Never with ranch!

You contradict yourself. You say fries should be eaten plain then you say you put stuff on them. TRUE Fry Eaters only put salt on them if they're cooked properly.

Good topic to resurrect at the moment. While I'm partial to shoestring thin fries with catsup myself, recently the mayo sauce thing has come back into discussion. About a month ago caught a mention of "comeback sauce" on the Nate Berkus Show with the cast of "The Help" set in Mississippi. Seems since then, the sauce has been the topic of many blogs and food shows as a regional thing that you use as everything from a salad dressing to a french fry dip. It sounds like a spiced-up catsup/mayo/mustard mix that everybody has some secret ingredient to make it their own. It doesn't sound like something that I would find appealing, but I'm interested if anyone else use it or for that matter is familliar with it for fries.

I should have been more clear - I meant the fries themselves should be 100% potatoes.  No dextrose, no rice flour, no modified food starch, just 100% potatoes.

I eat fries plain w/ salt or with just vinegar/salt or will dip them in a sauce.  Just never ever with crispy coating!
