Last Thursday I met a friend at The Tamale Place for a late breakfast. It's in a strip mall in the 5600 block of Rockdale Road.
It has an open kitchen and a decent amount of seating, although I suspect a good portion of the business is the carry-out variety.
Because it was a beautiful morning Jim and I took our promptly-served tamales and ate outside. Mine were chicken in red sauce (mild) and pork in green sauce (spicy) and Jim, not understanding that he's supposed to order 2 other completely different tamales so we can sample 4, ordered 2 of the chicken versions.
Chicken in red sauce. No resemblance to the things in the Hormel can whatsoever!
Pork in green sauce.
Now I'm no expert on Mexican food but these tamales were really good. The fillings were mostly meat with enough sauce for flavor but not enough to drown everything and turn it into a soggy mess, and the spicy pork had a nice chile kick. Jim's a local and said he'll definitely return, but I might have to wait a year.
