What up? Wikieup.

Saturday we drove from Phoenix to Vegas. Wickenburg was too early for lunch and Kingman would be too late. We split the difference and stopped in Wikieup.  We couldn't pass by this sign, it sealed the deal.
 

The exterior was nicely freshened up, but the interior of the Wikieup Trading Post looks like it had not changed much in decades.
 

You will find bits & pieces of these guys on the menu.
 

Bobbi found the winner on the menu, the Southwest Grilled Roast Beef Sandwich, which included chiles, onions & cheese. This may be Arizona's answer to the Green Chile Cheeseburger. We shared the sandwich and both thought it was excellent, although I would have been happy with more chiles.
 

I ordered the beef enchiladas, which were served wet - covered with chili. It was nothing special and it could have used some more heat.
 
We were preparing to leave when our waitress said that she mistakenly charged us for a slice of pie and she had to remove it from our bill.  If that was not an omen, I don't know what is. WWBBD?
 

We had the homemade deep dish peach pie.  It was very good, although it only had a top crust.
 
Our waitress was extremely fun and friendly.  We were in & out in 40 minutes and back on the road to Vegas. Good and fast as advertised. And rattlesnake souvenirs, to boot.

They only offered chili (with beans) on the enchiladas and burritos.
Wikieup would have taken you way off of your I-40 route.  It is just your side of Nothing.

We have plans for next time that do not include enchiladas, chili, or beans.  That will be revealed in episode 4 or 5.

Ever since they built the Bypass around Wickenburg, it's pretty much killed the downtown businesses. One of the places we like in downtown is the Twin Wheels Cafe for Breakfast. A real old time Western Joint on the main drag.

Do you remember going thru Nothing between Wickenburg and Wikieup? It's near the Joshua Tree National Forest.
That's Nothing AZ, Population 4.
The town supposedly got named by a bunch of Drunks.
If you slowed down you could have read the town sign:
“ Town of Nothing Arizona. Founded 1977. Elevation 3269ft.
The staunch citizens of Nothing are full of Hope, Faith, and Believe in the work ethic. Thru-the-years-these dedicated people had faith in Nothing, hoped for Nothing, worked at Nothing, for Nothing.  

foodbme - We did see Nothing, or at least the sign for it. Looked like even that had burned down.
 
Not to be confused with "I know nothzing, nothzing."

Episode 2 - The Rest of Saturday
Swanky hotel, expensive meal, and funny show. 
Nothing to see here.  Move along folks.

Episode 3 - Sunday Morning
On Sunday we were thinking about doing buffets for our meals, but were turned off because of the lines. Option 2 was to look for Roadfood. The closest choice was the Hash House, but we were not up to driving. So we decided to try Hash House A Go Go (part of a five restaurant chain) instead and compare the two.
 

Hash House A Go Go was crowded, noisy, and pricy. I think this area is used as a bar at night.
 

Bobbi started with a hot chocolate. It was very good and worth licking the saucer.
 

I ordered the Tractor Driver Combo, which was two eggs, two bacon or sausage, and a flapjack. The eggs were still a bit runny & tasty, and the bacon was above average. The flapjack was huge, but really dry. I could only eat the parts that I had drenched in butter and syrup.
 

Bobbi's chicken and waffles was a huge portion, with really tasty chicken. The waffles, er, the waffles. Well my first and final thought was that I always get better waffles at home.
 
My overall impression, Hash House A Go Go was okay, but not for the money. However, for the Vegas strip our wait was short and we could probably have done worse.

While I am completely intrigued with chicken and waffles, i just dont like waffles that much. Bobbis looks awesome, but again, waffles dont do it for me.However, when wandering jew had the penn. style, THAT I would like!

Try adding some vanilla or almond extract to your batter and see what a difference that makes. Also I put plenty of butter on them and NO Syrup. I sometimes top my waffle with 2 eggs over easy. (My Waffle House Special)
The PA Dutch waffles, diced leftover chicken & gravy is the ultimate comfort food.
If you ever get to Phoenix, LoLo's Waffles are the most flavorful waffles I've ever had. I don't know what they put in their batter but their waffles have a taste & flavor like no other waffles. Don't know what it is but it's good!

Malt powder in the mix is the trick!  Also, cook them longer than you think they should be cooked.... but not by much.

I would eat the chicken along with the waffle and syrup. Since I enjoy honey with my chicken, I would definately give it a go!

It's hard rto do with bone-in chicken. I've seen people dunk their chicken in Syrup.

Arrrrgh! Been through Kingman several times and struggled to find a good place to eat (too many chains) and other places closed down too early. This looks great. That peach pie looks delicious!

Monday Morning - Hash House.
I didn't take a lot of photos here because it seemed that there was another recent report on the Hash House. Turns out that the report was from over 2-1/2 years ago, but it is fresh in my mind. 
 

The sign outside the restaurant said "Cinnamon Roll French Toast." We asked about it inside and since it was $2.99 we ordered it. There must have been some miscommunication because our waitress brought this cinnamon roll. It was moist and tasty, and all we needed since we each had hash coming.
 

I had the Ham Hash and being a ham lover I definitely loved this.  I probably should have had something other that the home fries as a side, as I over did it with potatoes.
 

Bobbi ordered the roast beef hash, and had mixed feelings. Although she enjoyed it, she would have liked to try the corned beef hash. Next time ...
 

We each liberally applied the homemade Chipotle Sauce to our eggs and potatoes. We enjoyed this sauce so much we bought a quart to bring home.  It was great with tortilla chips and on our Taco Waffles tonight.  We also bought some watermelon jelly, great minds do think alike.

Foodbme - Per Roadfood Offline, the two are not connected in any way.

They inadvertently have a slice of pie added to your bill?  Through a miscommunication, they bring you a cinnamon roll you didn't order?  You do seem to have some delicious accidents!  That ham hash and watermelon jelly is bringing back some really good memories.

While at Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles in LA, where I believe the dish originated, I absolutely saw someone pour syrup over their (bone-in) chicken and waffle dish.
 
And, when I say that I "saw" someone....

I did the same thing at Roscoe's. Very logical to me that they go together.

That's not so strange, this dish was served with a maple syrup reduction covering it.

A new Roscoe's location opened recently very near Randy's Donut.
 
I need to get out and experiment!  I really don't think I'll be able to put pseudo maple syrup on the chicken...  even if it was the real thing.

Monday Afternoon - Eat at Joe's BBQ
We saw Eat at Joe's on the way north through Wikieup. While in Vegas I checked Roadfood and found this old thread that was posted by Joe himself. What the heck, we decided that Joe's was our lunch stop on the return trip to Phoenix.
 

Eat at Joe's seemed to have a lot of regulars, but our waitress Maria (second from left) treated me and Bobbi like old friends.
 

I ordered the MoJoes, a smoked pork sausage (better known as a fattie in BBQ-speak), which was loaded with large chucks of garlic. Very tasty. The white beans with brisket were kind of bland until I added salt and pepper. Still, I thought the pasta salad was the best of the sides that we ordered.
 

Of course Bobbi ordered the better of the entrees. This is her Heaven on a Bun Sandwich, a mix of pulled pork, shredded brisket and barbecue sauce.  The mixture of the smoked meats was close to heaven. One of the better barbecue sandwiches in my memory. She doesn't have much to say about her sides.
 
Before we could leave, Bobbi and Maria started speaking orgasmically about pies. Alas, Joe's does not serve pies, but Maria talked us into trying the homemade peach ice cream that they serve. It wasn't made on premise, but did seem homemade and was a very good ice cream. Bobbi promised to bring Maria a pie on our next trip through Wikieup, and I was finally able to drag her out of the restaurant.
 
Eat at Joe's is definitely worth a stop on our next trip through Wikieup.

I don't think so. They had a small check-out counter, but nothing that caught my eye.
