Yes, I know $35k is HUGE but it is what it is.
I first tried a Food Truck but the Gelato case would be too high off the ground for the customer to look at the beautiful presentation and taste the flavors and pick the one they wanted. I had to go to a trailer that the floor height is 18" off the ground so they could still see into the case.
I was trying to get the smallest trailer possible and the small Gelato case was still too long to fit between the front of the trailer and the wheel well. we looked at 7ft wide trailers and that way the case could go anywhere along the wall but we decided 7ft was too narrow with all the equipment so we went with a 8ft wide trailer.
I've talked with most all the food trucks here and all of them said I should do very well with Gelato since Tucson only has 3 Gelato shops and all of them are always over crowded and with tons of people here trying to eat healthier and Gelato being half the fat of ice cream it should do well.
I was also going to do Panini Sandwiches and Coke is supplying the nice True Solid glass door fridge so that will save me $1,500.
Concession trailers are so easily sold here that Wells Cargo's agreement is they will buy the trailer back for 10-15% less than I paid for 1 year because I worked a very good deal with them and the president of Wells Cargo is personally involved with my trailer build and I've been promised that this trailer will be the nicest concession trailer in town.
I bought a 2002 F250 Diesel truck from friends that I can sell for $5k more than I paid for it.
So with my $50-$60k investment, if it doesn't work out I won't lose my butt. The Gelato case is $5k and that may take a hit of $1,500 if I sold it used. And that figure includes everything including 4 months of supplies, general liability ins, and the $3k wrap and everything else.
With the popularity and 1/2 the fat of Gelato here I think it's will be a good mobile business.
