PNW, that looks so good! And CC that bread looks outrageous!  I have jury duty today in Hackensack, NJ so here is where I went for lunch!

Not a picture I took as I forgot to take one of the outside!
Here are pictures of my fries and cheese burger. It was a nice yummy lunch break!

White Manna is a very nice silver-lining to jury duty!

Sliders usually are in the shadow of other popular foods & venues of NJ (Diners boardwalks hot dogs pizza subs etc.) but certainly enjoy a very long rich history here.

I was raised on White Mana in Jersey City. Fun place that taught me how to be tough...

Glad you liked Abbate's, not that there was any doubt.

PS: I rushed off to Benanti's right after they won that NJ.Com award a few years ago, and of course was not disappointed. Fantastic! Plus I love places that do business like it was 1956.

Today's lunch was excellent Hot Dogs from Captain Paul's  Firehouse Dogs, which will make it into the NJ Hot Dog thread when I get around to it.

Captain Paul's will go on the list for the next time I need a valid birth certificate from Trenton. I see in addition to wonderful hot dogs there's also a Cinnamon Bun sundae on the menu.

The other day I had lunch at a place called 25 Burgers. It's located in the same complex as Abbate Bakery. A somewhat new NJ gourmet burger place with 5 locations. It has a Five Guys feel with a little 50s thrown-in. Spotless & shiny...

I'm not a big burger eater but they have other menu options including a blue crab burger that I would have ordered if I didn't have a few lbs. of lobstah waiting for me at home. I decided on #24 pot roast sandwich on a fresh-baked plain roll...

Topless shot...

It was a very flavorful sandwich & the flavors weren't all coming from salt city.

A manageable order of Jersey Shore fries were nice & crispy...

Lunch was $12...which I found to be reasonable. I'm not a cheapskate.

There's a couple of 25 Burgers locations out this way. Pretty good, not as good as 5 Guys, at least to my taste. One thing I like about them is that it doesn't seem to be a one-size-fits-all operation. The one in Bound Brook looks like it might have been a Wetson's or something years ago, while the one in Branchburg is in what had been an old Diner attached to a seedy bar (not quite as seedy since 25 opened, plus they've discovered Craft Beer and it's higher profit margins)

I just checked the location of 25 Burgers in Linden & it's the very charming former location of White Diamond (it was vacant for a few years). They even kept & continue to use the White Diamond griddle.

That was a fun little place. I'll have to go see if the interior is somewhat the same.

A cool, cloudy, fall day was perfect for trying out the Russian Family Restaurant in Redwood City, CA  http://russianfamily.net/  We really enjoyed their hearty, stick-to-your-ribs comfort food.

Here's their Spring Green Soup, which can be served hot or cold.

I got their malt soda, which is probably more like non-alcoholic beer than anything.  Definitely unusual!

We got these "patties" (Babushkiny Zrazy) which had potatoes on the outside and ground beef on the inside, served with mushroom gravy.  The pickles were like cornichons--very nice complement to this dish.

Here's what it looked like inside:

This is Georgian Chicken Stew (Chakhokhbily iz kuritsy) which came with pita-style bread.  The dish had Middle-eastern flavor to it, which makes sense when you look at the map--Georgia is next to Turkey and Iran.

Everything we got was delicious, and yes--the stainless steel was interesting!  They also had small china bread plates, but I didn't take pics of their brown bread.  I think my favorite dish was the Georgian chicken stew.  I'd skip the malt soda next time and maybe get a beer or a Russian fruit flavored soda.  Didn't even look at desserts. A sorta boring dinner but it is Pinto beans with fried cornbread with onions in the mix:
I made the beans the following way:
1: One pound of pinto's
2: One container of chicken stock
3: One huge slice of salted pork belly
4: One whole red jalapeno pepper
5: One whole poblanao pepper
6: Two sliced and cubed onions.
7: Four shredded garlic cloves.
Three hours on the stove at medium covered.

Very very good if you like pinto beans.

Loooong day trip today with Wife  & my sister to the Wildwoods etc for birding and eating. The A & LP Food Center in North Wildwood has been on my to-do list for years, finally got there for lunch.

http://www.alpfoods.com/Index.asp

There's a reason why a place stays in business since 1953.  Best cheeseteak in years, and at 18 inches and loaded, surely the biggest. Split 3 ways, it was more than enough. Huge side of fries was excellent too. Fed us nicely for 25 bucks including 3 20 0z. bottled sodas.

Long walk on the virtually deserted Wildwood Boardwalk afterward took care of our need to walk it off.

L2B...

"Sicilian" is a popular style of pizza in the NYC area that's sorta an ode to NYC adapted version of the Sicilian Sfincione. There can be some variations from neighborhood to neighborhood (thicker/ thinner mozzarella or Romano cheese under/over sauce) ....and if it's found in a pizza parlor or bakery.

This "Sicilian" is pressed (not rolled) on a well-oiled sheet pan. Nice crispy crust... nice light pillowy center (with just the slightest bit of chew). Rectangular slices ...much thicker than a standard slice of pizza.

The last few years the somewhat similar "Grandma or Nonna" pies have made it on to the radar. I'll stick with the traditional "Sicilian" variety that was so popular when I was young...we had to clarify what type of slice we wanted when ordering.

Today my wife and I took a quick trip up the Parkway to do a little food shopping in the old heavily Italian and Polish towns of Garfield and Lodi  NJ. Our first stop was Vitamia's Ravioli Store, which some NJ sources say has the best Ravioli in New Jersey.

http://www.pastaboy.com/

Well, the Ravioli, which we had for dinner, was excellent. Best in State? Possibly, but we have pretty dam good Ravioli right here in Scotch Plains at Florence Ravioli.

It was the OTHER STUFF that we wound up buying and taking home for lunch for today and tomorrow that we are raving about. All kinds of Italian Prepared goodies on the counters and displayed in the glass cases in this old-school shop.

For lunch today we each had a rice ball (excellent) and something neither of us had ever seen before, a Sicilian Onion Pie. Basically it's a huge slice of Sicilian Pizza (about 2x the size of a normal sicilian slice and 4x the weight) topped with a baked breadcrumb and cooked onion mixture. Just fantastic.

Tomorrow's lunch: an individual bakery pizza, and a slice of sausage bread.

We bought so much food on impulse that we skipped our 2nd stop, the Piast Meats Polish Castle on Passaic Street, and instead headed home for Lunch Italian Style.

http://www.piast.com/pages/contact

After today and tomorrow, and with Thanksgiving coming up, I'm already about 3 pounds in the hole with no letup in sight. Skipping the Polish Store is what passes for a diet this time of year.

PS: CC, that pernil looks great. Where from? You've got to keep us Jersey people fully informed. Thanks.

L2B...

Grandma pizza is a type of pizza that started on Long Island years ago & has been traveling around the NYC area. Mileage varies on what you can expect when ordering & the description for it.

It's often described as a thinner version of Sicilian ( it can go so far as having a cracker crust) "fresh & tangy" chunky sauce...heavy on the garlic (no thank you) ...and some of the latest NYC versions burn the sh"t out of the bottom of the crust.

I believe the original version going back 30 years ago probably was the same thing many a Grandma would do...make a simple & delicious pizza @ home using fresh from the garden tomatoes. That's very seasonal & can't be on a menu so many peeps frame Grandma in all sorts of ways that I doubt she'd appreciate.

Here's the bottom of a Grandma slice from Artichoke Basille's...

Many people love it. I'm not many people.
