CC - Thanks for the explanation! If I ever get to a place that actually makes a distinction between Nonna and other pizza, I'll try one for myself.  The char doesn't put me off enough to not try it.

Artichoke Basille's recently opened a location in Berkely.

They are Staten Island peeps....but I don't think they sound like me.

I'll be at Una Pizza Napoletana.

Must have been something in the water Agnes. I don't usually make a big turkey for lunch.

Bring-on the Chinese food at Christmas!!!

CC: Thanks for the info on Mi Quisqueya. There are so many of these type places in Urban NJ, and it's so difficult to get any real information about any particular one. It's good to know of one that comes highly recommended.

I agree with your summary and assessment of Grandma Pizza. When I first became aware of the style about 5 or 6 years ago, mostly via Ed Levine's pizza book I began seeking out examples, but I quickly got frustrated because like you, I never knew what to expect and was often dissapointed. I'm mostly back to regular and Sicilian these days.

Since this is the lunch thread, here's what I've had for lunch since Friday:
Turkey.

To be fair, I've had it in every permutation imaginable, but as of today, it's all gone, and I'm glad.

I see carrots, Brussels sprouts, sausages, what appear to be fries (or chips), mashed potatoes (?) and cranberries, but what are the rest of the items on the plate?

The contents of the plate are...

Turkey, ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes, chipolata sausages, sprouts, carrots, roast parsnips, roast potato, breaded stuffing ball, bread sauce and finally cranberry sauce.

I could barely move afterwards, I sense that could be a common feeling for the next few weeks!

I have that often, with peanut butter instead of the mayo.  Definitely the salt and pepper.  Nice and easy midnight snack.  I like 'em best on small dinner rolls, maybe Parker House type if I have them.

Got home early from work so I made a "fancy" cheese steak. I always keep small steaks in the freezer for easy defrosting whenever anyone needs a quick meal. Right now I have a few small filet mignons in there. I defrosted one, fried up some chopped onions and then the steak to a medium rare. I then thin sliced the steak and put it on a buttered and toasted brioche roll along with the onions and some thinly sliced provolone cheese. Very delicious!! And a nice treat!

Lisa, that sausage looks wonderful.  Not so much the potato pancakes but my base of comparison is potato latkes.  Unfair comparison if I say so myself.

I'd eat everything on that plate in a heartbeat!

Did you use mustard?  What kind?  I can almost taste it!

The sausage is indeed wonderful.  The Bahama Mama has been on Man v Food on the Travel Channel.  It's basically a spicy brat......but it's sooooo good!  I put mustard on mine.  They have small pots of whole grain mustard on the table along with their own horseradish which has a kick.  Half-way through my sausage I added horseradish also!
The potato pancakes come out hot and crispy.  They are just shredded potatoes with some herbs.  I lightly salted them.......perfect!
BTW, with 1/3 of my sandwich left I ditched the bread!!  If I'm going to fill up, I'd rather leave the bread than the sausage.  MH was hoping I wouldn't finish all the potatoes.  Ha!  Fat chance of that!!  I even ate his pickle!

I have for years preferred to pick up Bahama mamas from the meat counter there and take them home and grill them. The ones I've had in the restaurant have never had enough char for me. But that one looks fabulous.

This is hardly the best looking dish in the world, but boy--was it flavorful.  Called "Sexy Fries," it's sweet potato waffle fries topped with curry spiced chicken (or other protein of your choice), along with cheese and onions.  It was delicious!  The restaurant is Curry Up Now, which started out as a food truck and has now grown to several B&M locations in SF and the peninsula.  Very popular for its Indian fusion food.  http://www.curryupnow.com

Yum...that looks & sounds really good to me! I love Indian food & Curry Up Now seems like it does so many fun new menu options!

What kind of cheese?

That's a nice combination (sweet potato & curry)

I make a pineapple curry (no cumin...eh) that might make it's way to what's for breakfast...soon.

And you were right, it does taste the same.
My mother used to serve this for dinner, along with grated "cheese" in a green tube.

I was telling lleechef yesterday that when I was a kid I couldn't figure out why the cheese that was served at the homes of friends and at restaurants didn't taste the same as the stuff we had at home in the green can.

The cake is from Livoti's in Matawan. They do a superb job in all depts. & the store is a delicious & pretty place to shop....

Had a chance to try the HRD Coffee Shop in SF yesterday.  Maybe it used to be a coffee shop, but it has morphed into a primarily Korean fusion menu.  I was hoping to try their BBQ pork and scrambled eggs over rice, but you can't get any of the breakfast dishes after 10:30 a.m., so I got a Mongolian Cheesesteak.  It was tasty, but I wouldn't order it again.

Thanks for posting that segment on HRD.  Their prices are a bit higher now--including tax my sandwich was just under $12.  I beat the line by getting there just before the lunch rush.  There were easily 20 waiting by the time I left.

Pretty fancy digs for a humble knish, CC!

Poutine!  Today I had lunch at Great Dane and they make theirs with house-made fries and the curds (flavored with garlic and dill) are melted in the oven or under the broiler.  It was quite good, as were the clam chowder and French onion soup.

Great Dane looks fun! Billiards at the downtown location...

L2B...there was a fire at the Gabila's factory a few months ago that cause a shortage of the fried knish variety. When that happened the poor little baked knishes (the only knishes available at the time) ended-up under the bus....through no fault of their own.  The humble little knish deserved the royal treatment after all that.

That looks delicious!!

That's so sad about the knish factory fire.  Looks like they got back online fairly quickly, at least.  I'm sure I've had their knishes in the past.

Thanks Texascajun!

L2B...you're due for another NYC knish!

It's WW bonus points day so I made Yukon Gold mashed potatotes with fried cabbage...onions & bacon...

I also made delightful blueberry pie ice cream...
