I had a picnic all by myself in my back yard. Half a crab-stuffed cucumber, olive salad, shrimp salad, and cottage cheese. With a huge glass of sweet tea.

The recipe called for 3 per sheet. I made a few more batches after those behaved so well.

It was a very detailed Bouchon Bakery recipe. By hand it was somwhat of a cookie miracle. For me...at least.

Maybe with a mixer they'll spread out more.

Here's my inspiration. The cookie I had from Bouchon Bakery in Las Vegas...




They look different but the flavor was spot-on Bouchon!

I was sober when I baked the cookies. I'll leave it at that.

I had perhaps a beer too many last night, so lunch (being my first meal of the day) was cream of tomato soup and a cheese and bacon sandwich fried in the bacon grease.

The eggplant was a coaching lesson for my nephew. He's very talented and a quick study.

After that we celebrated victory!




Mark celebrated with the popular Roadfood beer...




I stayed on the Italian theme with a few bottles of Zardetto Prosecco.



Just enough to promise I'd make homemade ricotta impastata for a cannoli lesson.

Veritas also has a cool Ozbar wine dispensing system. I'm amazed to find this in Tehachapi...

I never made a (whatever you call it) cheese sandwich using bacon fat. I'm gonna do that for lunch tomorrow. I just bought bacon to go with polenta for breakfast.


Yikes! That's crazy expensive! I had a taste of his beer ...and it really is delicious!

I'll see if they carry the entire line...and keep sampling...while I'm here.

I hadn't done it before, either...but since I'd just fried the bacon I figured what the heck. It was excellent.
 
Yeah, I'm not paying that for beer no matter how much I love it. The grocery store near my friend's house in Tahoe sells it for $6.99/6 pack. If they've got it, I'm a huge fan of their Alley Cat Amber and Raspberry Brown.

CC - Mom always referred to that kind of meal (same color scheme) as a Helen Keller Meal.  She hated when she discovered that everything she made was the same color, she would purposely go back in the kitchen and steam broccoli so at least there was another color on the plate.  I miss meals at her house.

Haha, Cajun--I notice that kind of stuff, too, when I either make it or pick up food at a buffet.  I also notice when everything on the plate is round, which happens on occasion.

With rollatini it's mostly about adapting a procedure from the standard eggplant parmigiana way.

Uniform thin slices. I salt & soak the eggplant in milk. Many people will say it's not necessary...but that's the way it has always been done. . I wouldn't dare change anything.and it always works out with great flavor & texture...easy to roll...neat & tidy.

I fry the eggplant in grapeseed oil. It goes in the oven without any sauce. I paint it with a little pepperoni oil to give it a little flavor boost and keep it becoming dry.

Cheese for the filling is drained ricotta & pecorino romano (no mozzarella in the filling) topped with (when at home) fresh mozzarella parmigiano reggiano & a little shredded provolone. I build with a restrained amount of sauce @ time of assembly. Back in the oven with sauce...and to melt ( not brown) the cheese.

My mom called that lunch the SPF 50 special.

I moved on to earth tones this week.

Roast beef with gravy & fries...



My mom had a patty melt and declared me strange because I never had a patty melt...



She has some nerve.

The other day I visited Edwards AFB (yes CC does indeed have credentials) and visited the commissary & some cool retired aircraft...





They had Twinkies but I don't like Twinkies...



I like these...







This SR-71 Blackbird could get me home in about an hour...





I believe I can fly...



While there I had a big honkin' sandwich @ Arby's & some chips...

It was as hot as blazes. Thankfully it does not get as hot in Tehachapi.

I used Columbus pepperoni out here. Yum!!

Yesterday I had a pepperoni pretzel from Wetzel's Pretzels...




If I can find the dough hook I'm gonna make some homemade pretzels tomorrow!

The German bakery is not just magical for desserts. They bang out some extraordinary sandwiches. All of the components for this Reuben (but for the Swiss) are crafted in-house...

This is 1/2 of the sandwich...





Served with a generous yummy portion bread & butter pickles...


All that & a bag of chips (seriously) cost $7.95.

I had frozen dough from the last batch of Bouchon and these cookies were just as scrumptious...

We went to Crabill's in Urbana for lunch.  Last time we were there was in the spring when we met buffetbuster and Mariton.  Their burgers are "sliders", MH had 3 double cheeseburgers with everything (onion, relish, mustard) and I had one double cheese with mustard.  We washed that down with Stewart's root beer.  Then we headed to Henry's in West Jefferson for pie.  Neither of us are big pie people, but we were in the area......so MH had banana cream and I had strawberry rhubarb.  They were sooooo good that MH got another piece of banana cream and ate it there, while I ordered a piece of coconut cream to bring home. 
 
I took pictures of the burgers and the pies on my phone and sent them to bb.  We could hear him groaning all the way from Pittsburgh.

I use pickled beet juice for color...and that also lends some wonderful flavor as well. Lean moist & meaty! They can be a little fatty dry & jerky depending on the Chinese restaurant.

That sounds good & fresh...CK!

Rice can really be sucky these days. I LOVE a good rice pudding but other than that...rice has become more miss than hit.

This is the rice pudding recipe my grandma, then my mom, always made. And now it's mine. Straight from the 1934 Watkins cookbook.
 
2 eggs
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups whole milk, scalded
1 1/4 cups cooked rice
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup raisins (optional)
 
Beat egg slightly; add sugar and salt and mix well.
Slowly add scalded milk to the egg mixture, stirring constantly.
Add the rice, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon and raisins and stir to completely combine.
Pour into a greased 2-quart baking dish; set in pan of hot water and bake at 350F for 40-45 minutes, until set.
 
Not that you need to use my recipe, but now I have to.
 
Lunch for me today was crab salad on whole wheat with Dijon and cheddar, with a huge glass of sweet tea. It almost never occurs to me to take pictures of lunch.
