I saved some bacon fat so I will pick-up some nice bread at the Farmers' market this afternoon...to make a sandwich.

I'm not done yet but 24-hour clock of key lime pie...is ticking faster...

I would never complain to Jesus but @ 3/$5 his tacos are also a good deal...and quite delicious!

Nice article about the key lime pies!

Not many (if any) key lime pies in my hood. Lemon meringue is very popular in Diners (that's where the majority of pies are found in NJ).

I was very pleased with the results. I didn't intend for the pretzel "crust" to be more like pretzel brittle (one recipe kept saying make sure the pretzels are coarse) but it was sorta nice like that. Next time I'll crush them finer for more of a crust.

Making the sweetened condensed milk was easy...and it was really lively and delicious. I loved the homemade sweetened Mexican crema. A little thicker and it will be perfect.

No liners next round. Stupid lines.

The curious case of key lime pie.

Curiosity is usually not a good thing for cats like me....but I'm fine... chillin' near the coolers...

Not exactly a conventional lunch but it's a ROADFOOD lunch...for California...

Free samples...

People often complain that the Blueberry Truffles are not very Truffley but the Blueberry Truffles are delicious...

There ya go...California. I chose Milk not Dark...

Gotta get that one...

I also selected a Marzipan...Lemon & Pineapple "Truffles"... & a Milk Chocolate Cherry.

I just wish it was packed in a box. It's summer in Palmdale and while See's is very cool...the rest of the mall was not so much...

Thankfully I got them to the car safely and cranked-up the ac...after I bought some Wetzel Bitz...

SEE'S!

I love the Key Lime Truffles.  I didn't know California Brittle came in dark chocolate.  Why didn't I know!

Marzipan on the left?  Butterscotch square on the right?  Scotch Mallow on the bottom?

No?  That would be my order but the blueberry would be raspberry.

What did you think of the pretzel bites?  I had them at Union Station while waiting for a train to arrive.  I found them too hard and dry.

I brought the Bitz home...through Antelope Valley Fair traffic. By the end of that drive...we were all squeaking!

The Key Lime Truffle was fantastic. The See's lady was so nice...I was full of chocolate samples by the time I was ready to make selections. I have a great memory but for some reason when it's about great chocolate my mind goes blank.

The "California Milks" are @ 12 & 9 o'clock....

Key Lime is @ 1

Blueberry Truffle is @ 11....

Milk Cherry is 3ish...

The rest are yet to be had....and I can't remember by looking at the jackets.

Next time I'll wait until it's slow and have all of the wrapped like gifts in the cute little See's boxes. Shake 'em up and guess what's inside...

Before lunch it was time for the hair appointment....

The well-behaved part of the family...happy and lookin' good...

Ok Cousin Cavallo time to get that hair did...

I got him out of that situation and decided to do it inside. It's not a wash & set...

Awww...very cute...

Then it was time to go to Moessner's Farm/Orchard/Fruit Stand/Cafe/Bakery...for lunch.

I admired the impressive collection of tomatoes that are very difficult to grow in this area. Moessner's gets it done...

Charming cafe...

I had a Malibu Ham sandwich (Black Forest Ham - Teriyaki Pineapple - Swiss on Sourdough) and the most amazing beautiful & delicious farm fresh salad with Moessner's raspberry vinaigrette dressing. Best salad EVER...

Moessner's own incredible tomato soup...

Peach turnover for dessert...

I really like their pineapple truffles and cashew brittle.  Haven't tried the key lime or blueberry--sounds like a visit is in order.

Sandwich looks good.  Not so sure about that squiggly stuff in the cup...

I'm not President of the squiggly stuff fan club. It's been almost 30 (yipes! yipes! strike that 10) years since the last time I had alfalfa sprouts. It worked in this salad.

That dressing could fix anything...like my mind...which is a terrible terrible thing.

Village Grill for lunch...

I had faith that the "Phiily Cheese Sandwich" would be spectacular.

It was spectacular...

They made it on the garlic bread that I enjoy very much.

When I look at the first picture I eventually "see" a sardine that's not there so I'll look at this picture instead...

A backwards CC McSundae...

That cheesesteak sandwich looks awfully good...

I went to a birthday celebration with friends.  We had mussels:

Salad Nicoise (non traditional):

And bay scallop ceviche with taro chips:

I never had an apple dumpling. Tehachapi is known for the world-famous apples...so I borrowed a few from friends on Cherry Lane so I could make 'em myself....

Hot Stuff cinnamon whiskey tastes a little like Lavoris with more burn (when sipping) but it makes a lovely CC Hot Stuff Caramel sauce for the apple dumplings...

Beautiful delicious & I believe I have a little afternoon bonus buzz....

Before the dumplings I had beef barbacoa for lunch...

The beef barbacoa was excellent! It was called a sandwich...but that would imply the bread would play a roll. It was pale & pasty...so it didn't make the cut.

I've been spoiled by <<<Hoboken>>> bread my entire life.

Hello <<<Hoboken>>> bread. I miss you...

The weather is pretty disgusting today.  It's so humid and with thunderstorms in the area I'm not grilling on this Labor Day! I picked up some Chinese Food for everyone to pick on throughout the day!
Sesame chicken.

Pork Fried Rice.

Wontons in Sesame Sauce. The wontons here are really meaty and good!

Boneless Ribs. They put a char on them here which makes them very tasty.

Spring Roll.

Shrimp Toast.

Egg Drop soup.

Chicken for the sweet and Sour Chicken.

It's not our typical Labor Day meal but I haven't heard any complaints!

So true CC! Funny thing, though, I've never found a Chinese restaurant that does everything to our likening perfectly. I've been know to pick up from three or even four different places to put together one meal! This is one of the few places I would admit that! Crazy, right?

It's usually Yummy Yummy for hot & sour soup & Great Wall for Chow Mei Fun. They're only a few blocks apart so it's no problem.

NJ Chinese food was Christmas dinner last year. My sons has so much fun...it may stay a tradition.

So funny, My husband had to go out of town on Christmas so we had our Christmas feast the weekend before. My kids and I decided we would go the route of A Christmas Story and get Chinese food. As it turned out we all came down with the flu so it was a good choice! We got lots of soup besides some of the usual's. There's been talk of doing it again this year (not the flu part of course)! We'll see!
CCinNJ
BTW, CC, As I'm sure is the case with you, we have at least 8 or 10 Chinese restaurants within a 5 mile radius of where I live! Lot's of choices. We also have at least the same amount of pizza places!

Same here Agnes!

Just got back from shopping and lunch at Mitsuwa Marketplace with my son Kyle. It has become kind of a birthday tradition for him.
Gotta have a bowl of ramen!

We also bought some fresh onigiri from
Omusubi Gonbei a shop that specializes in them. We got a salmon roe, spicy tuna, shrimp tempura and a salmon filled one.

My father and I have (for the past 20 yrs) have our Christmas Dinner at the local Chinese place.
They don't serve the roasted duck with the head on though and after going there for many years the owner comes up to me and laughingly says "NO FRA RA RA RA RA, it's FA LA LA LA LA" and then gives a big old belly laugh

Speaking of fun Chinese...a few weeks ago L2B & I had the good fortune to visit the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory in SF Chinatown. I first read about it in a NYT article a hundred years ago...

http://travel.nytimes.com.../26foraging.html?_r=1&

It sounded like an interesting place & it was a very fun place to visit. One of the obscure lesser-known Roadfood experiences to visit. That's what makes life fun & exciting.

Confucius say...time to embark on an adventure...

Fortune Cookie Factory is a tiny place that's tucked down a little alley. Confucius say...stay on right path where mystery awaits...

Getting closer...

It's a tiny place filled with good fortune hot-off-the-press...

Fresh warm delicious samples of Smackles (flat cookies sans fortune)...

Various cookies for sale...

Confucius say you're about to get a message...

and I did...

God knows I try...

We had sooooo much fun!

Smackles & fortune cookies...

It was a very cool place. The fresh fortune cookies and Smackles were awesome.

We had another very fun Chinese adventure. This time it was Deem Sum @ Yank Sing.

It's deem sum @ Yank Sing...

Yank Sing is an iconic restaurant in San Francisco...a 2009 winner of the James Beard Foundation America's Classic award. There's plenty of dim sum in San Francisco but there's only one...

Yank Sing is a nice elegant restaurant that's also warm charming gracious friendly & fun.

The dining room filled with the coolest rides in San Francisco (not the trolleys) the deem sum carts...

My favorite cart...Peking Duck...the Cadillac cart of the floor...

Yank Sing makes over 100 different varieties of deem sum at various times. it varies on a daily basis...& a great reason to visit Yank Sing again.

The carts came around with the various selections...

Make selections & score is kept on the bill tucked under the tablecloth...

The delicious deem sum we selected...

Shrimp Dumplings...

Spareribs...

Bacon-wrapped shrimp...

Our waitress told is that the sweet rice dumplings filled with BBQ pork were her favorite. We ordered them & they were complex (in a very good way) & like everything else @ Yank Sing delicious...

And for dessert...

Pistachio ice cream cake...

The very fun '& exciting orange juice jello...

Yank Sing is only open a few hours a day...for lunch. It is well worth the price & a deem sum meal is not only about delicious food but also about service & atmosphere. Yank Sing hits a home run on all counts.

It often takes a year for any given set of hands to connect with the mind & perfect the deem sum dishes expertly constructed @ Yank Sing.

CC - your pics are great and it was big fun!  Would love go to both of those places again right now.  It's great having those little carts come around--kind of the opposite of a cafeteria line.

You're so nice....you make it very easy to have big fun.  Thank you.

Next stop...Bob's Donuts...

Jane & Michael Stern wrote this article on America's Best Donuts/Donut Shops recently & Bob's Donuts made the box....

http://www.saveur.com/art...s/Americas-Best-Donuts

Bob's Donuts is a neighborhood donut shop on Polk St. in San Francisco open 24/7...

The Saveur articles is proudly displayed....

Donuts getting ready for the pool...

Right outta the tub...

My dozen...

Highlights...

I couldn't think for an hour after tasting the maple old-fashioned...

Bob's is an awesome donut shop with incredible donuts. When ordering a dozen it helps to be in the company of someone that also loves donuts & thinks that's a good idea. No yada yada dozen donuts? Dozen donuts? What are you gonna do with a dozen donuts? None of that. Thankfully.

L2B was down with that. She even ordered a big chunk of Apple Pandowdy...

Today is National Crab Newburg Day!

I came close with the very delicious Lobstah & Crab Thermidor from Tadich Grill...

I'll wait until "bizarre waiter & french fry day" or "delightful busboy day" for the rest of that story.
