Well folks, the first Boston Meet-Up at
All Star Sandwich Bar went without a hitch. If you've never had the pleasure of dining with
Bethgrd &
Karilyn, we highly recommend it! As usual, the table conversations centered around food and an incredibly high number of Boston restaurants that we have yet to try.
Karilyn was surprised to see Deviled Eggs on the menu (her son is a huge fan of them but rarely sees them on menus), so that was her choice for our starter:
We voted for
All Star's excellent poutine, since neither of the ladies had tried this dish. Hand-cut fries covered with gravy and fresh cheese curds from Formaggio Kitchen in Cambridge, really lip-smacking great!
Karilyn went traditional with the Beef on Weck -- she commented that it wasn't exactly like the ones in Buffalo but close enough and very delicious (and we took her leftovers and ate them the next day, and it was amazing!):
Beth decided to try the Funky sandwich, which changes daily. Today it was a Fried Chicken sandwich with bacon, cheddar, and cole slaw -- she said it was really great:
Amy ordered my longtime favorite, the Atomic Meatloaf Meltdown (like a grilled cheese but with griddled meatloaf and All Star's mango fire sauce). It was as incredible as it always is, though Amy said she should've asked for the hot sauce on the side because her mouth was on fire! I ate my half with no problems...
We have so focused on the sandwiches here that over the years, we've completely ignored the burgers until just this year. The burger special sounded too good to pass up, so I had the Shay Shay, medium rare (chili-rubbed patty with American cheese, bacon, fried poblano peppers, avocado cotija ranch and mango hot sauce). The key here is the excellent brioche roll, which finally disintegrated with the last bite:
Whew! A really fine meal -- and even more surprising that we had room for dessert! We ARE Roadfooders, however, so we dragged ourselves next door to
Christina's for ice cream.
Karilyn &
Beth shared the famous burnt sugar flavor, and we got peppermint stick with
Christina's fabulous hot fudge:
A magnificent meal with true friends! We'll be back next month, as soon as the Steering Committee comes up with a new place for February...we're leaning toward BBQ at the moment. Thanks, everyone!
