Coincicdently, we were just in Chapel Hill again this past weekend. On Saturday night, we went to Mama Dips. Both of us enjoyed a fried chicken dinner. I had the mashed potatoes and corn. Janet had the black-eyed peas and baby lima beans. It's hard to say if the chicken is in the "top 10 in the nation" as one recent poll indicted, but it is certainly top notch. Crisp on the outside, juicy and flavorful outside. We can't ask for much more than that The sides were very good, but not outstanding. The fried chicken was the star of the show.
Of course, on Sunday monring, we had to hit up the Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen. The chicken biscuits were fabulois, as always.
"Chlyn" mentioned above that there is no counter, and it's drive-through only. That's not quite accurate. It is correct that there is no indoor seating, but there is a walk-up counter inside. There is a side door next to the pick-up window that leads to walk-up counter. It is small in there, and they allow only a maximum of 3 people at a time in the walk-up area. That is how we picked up our order yesterday morning. We then ate in the car. There is parking on the west side of the building (same side as the pick-up window). They only have about 5 parking spaces. If those are filled, there is more parking at the businsess next door on the west side. That business seems to be closed on weekends. I think it is a State Farm insurance office. There are no signs posted that prohibit parking there, so we have used their parking lot in the past, when Sunrise's parking spots were full.
Come to think of it, of the 7 or 8 times that we have been to Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen, we have never used the drive-through. We know we have to eat in the car, as there is no seating. So, we always park our car first, then go to the walk-up counter through the side door, and bring the order back to the car. A roll of paper towels in the car comes in handy for those buttery, fall-apart biscuits!
