Hello everyone. I am new here and was just wondering if anyone knew of a good printing company that prints menus for cheap?

Thanks

If I am posting this in the wrong thread please let me know.

Welcome to Roadfood ScratchCrab!

If you have a printer with your home computer, that would be the very cheapest way to do it.  If you have MS Publisher (or MS Word) you could design the menu there.  I have self-published a 104 page book with 130 pictures using MS Publisher, so I know it can be done.  If that won't work for you, perhaps some of our members in California could refer you to a cheap local printer.

Doing it yourself is obviously the cheapest way to go. But if you want them done professionally, your best bet is to hit the phone book and call local print shops to see what they charge.

Be aware, however, that often in printing you get what you pay for. Make sure they don't use cheap paper, make sure they are willing to work with you on design, and if you want them laminated make sure you see work they've done before.

Re:Does anyone know where to get cheap menus printed? 2012/02/03 19:03:16
you can easily do them yourself at home :)

word has templates for menus or you could use powerpoint or publisher.  i would think wordperfect would also have templates for menus.  you could also probably use the 'open office' products as well.

most printers can handle paper that's a little on the heavier side if you wanted to use heavier stock or, if these are going to fold (either in half or thirds) regular 20# paper is all you'd need and you can easily get colored paper at any office supply store for a reasonable price.

pictures and/or graphics are no issue either as you can insert either in the documents created with the above mentioned software.

and most printers these days, if color, can print the pics very nicely!

only reason to pay a company to do them for you is if you need special paper (over sized, for example) or if you want them to coated with something (just glossy or fully laminated).

Welcome!

Have you tried Kinko's?

I'd print them myself or let Kinko's do it.... then I'd have them laminated so you can wipe them clean.

Santa Monica?  I hope you're opening up a Maryland Crab Company like the one in Santa Monica many years ago.

Again...  Welcome to Roadfood!

as a consumer, don't over do it ... you don't want an menu that looks like denny's, applebees, ihop, tg ... (well you get my point)

Several other tips:
1) If you want to change menus frequently (like daily special menus), consider getting a laser printer. They are cheaper in the long run, and are better for everything but photo printing.

2) If you want the menus to last, you can get a Scotch laminator for $20-30, and the lamination packets are about 50 cents each.

3) I saw some glossy brochure paper at Staples for about 14 cents a sheet (laser) or 23 cents a sheet (inkjet; told you laser was cheaper!). Not sure of the quality.

4) If you have trouble with design, there are often plenty of art or design students who want something they can put on their resume.

They've not logged back in since posting this question.  Odd.

But, there is good information here to be had by others.

Yeah...only 1 post...

I'd suggest avoiding a typeface that is NOT really small and hard to read, and avoid putting type over an image making it too hard to read ...

Why is that odd?  You don't have to be logged in to read the responses.  Eventhough I read these boards almost every day, it may be days or weeks between logging in.  It's those kind of "innocuous" comments that turn people off to this board, IMO.

I had good luck with a print job done by my local Staples - very quick and inexpensive for a good quality product.

I just had 2000 To Go Menus printed by Staples, $160.00 or $140.00 for the whole lot.
If your looking for a fancy graphic, something unique and don't want to do it yourself, there are probably 35,000,000 Graphic Designers in Venice or Santa Monica waiting to hear from you. Google!

If you go to Staples, Kinkos, etc., here's a VERY important consideration, learned the hard way by a number of people, all of whom (except for me) were warned: If you have multiple pages, then make sure you treat each page as a separate job. I used to volunteer at a place which put out a multi-page  8.5 x 5.5 inch booklet about 3 times a year, about 2500 copies. When the price of printing started to skyrocket, we figured out that it was cheaper to buy a folding machine, a saddle stitch stapler, have Staples make the copies and pay somebody $10 an hour to fold, collate and staple the copies together (that folding machine was fun to use, though). Well, the first time we tried it out, Staples made several mistakes on the pages, in spite of the fact that we had made mock-ups. When I stopped preparing the program, I warned the next person, who ignored me, and Staples made several mistakes on the pages, in spite of the fact that he made mock-ups. From what I've been told, this happened to the next guy, and the next guy, and the next guy after that, until the organization got a heavy duty duplex copying machine and started doing their own duplicating, too.

I guess I expect too much when someone requests help and then others take the time to help.

Like a thank you or that's interesting or I've already tried those or just some sort of comment that lets us know that our effort was not for naught.

Guess I thought the whole reason for these boards was to share information, without expectation of any recompense.  Still think its kind of harsh to label a new poster's behavior as "odd" because they don't live up to your expectations.  But I guess I expect too much from some people.

She didn't label the poster as odd. She said she thought it odd that someone would ask for information and then not respond.

Perhaps "eMARly Post" should write a message board etiquette sticky that we can make required reading for all new posters.  "Acknowledgements must be sent within 24 hours or your behavior will be considered odd" etc.

Frankly, I'm liking the feistiness I'm seeing from some 'newer' or 'younger' posters here lately.  It's called 'pushback' in the business world.

It might be what this site needs.

Interesting that the 'regulars' who ignored the 'newbies' have their own posting rules that the newbies must live up to.

Is that so terrible?  My odd comment stands as I really thought I'd see a response, not what followed.

Mar, I  say honestly I would not want to attack you, I have always enjoyed your posts, and I see you as as a person without a mean bone in her body.  I would like to know you, and help you with those condo stinker neighbors, and eat some of your delicious concoctions with you.

If I came across too pointed, really, I was aiming at some others that truly do dominate this site.  I don't understand why they dominate, but their negativity has been keeping me away, and we know that's true for others.

Thanks, easydoesit.

I posted before your second post.

I hope the original poster comes back because I can always use a new place to eat.

As far as the meanies, I don't really see them.  I do see some know-it-alls, but everyone has something they believe they know everything about.  Sometimes its just not true.

One of the problems that add to the phenomena of the "dominators" is that the ratio of readers to posters here is way off.  If more people took the time to post, whatever it is...  the same names showing up over and over again wouldn't stand out so much.

Actually you haven't been here longer than me, not even close.
I don't promote my business here, I show what a real Roadfood restaurant serves, you have never seen me mention the name of my place, perhaps you read about it in the Stern's last two editions of their bestseller "Roadfood".
The fact that we have different interests is of zero consequence to me, I post recipes, pictures of finished product, and comment on many various topics posted. No you don't have to post topics but your insecurity about your status here, and others who in your opinion dominate the site, is pitiful. Check your house, it's glass.

Good lord. Have we somehow been transported back to third grade? It's the internet. Just like in actual life, some people are obnoxious, others won't like you, others will make you feel bad, some will defend you to the death, some will think you're stupid, and others will be your best friends.

If someone is bothering you (or someone else) in a manner which is against the rules for this forum, then report them to the moderators. If you just don't like them or what they talk about, then just ignore them and refrain from opening the threads you know they are active in or that are titled something you don't like.

To chewingthefat,
Yes, this is getting silly, but I am not going to be browbeaten by you!

But I am going to review what has happened here:
Your complaint against me is that apparently I am not participating enough in this game.  I have explained why I have not, based on early personal experience.

Now, what will be the result of your attacks on me?  Just recently, I was trying to participate, and maybe extend an olive branch, when I remarked on how good your soup looked -- "beautiful and perfect" were the words I used, I believe.

But after this recent exchange, what would I be expected to do the next time you post your "non-publicity" pictures?

Will I jump on the bandwagon and tell you how good it looks, or will I refrain from remarking at all?

So -- you and your attacks on me have contributed to two things -- driving me further away, and reducing the amount of my participation, which is exactly what I am talking about.

I hope you can see that everything you are saying, everything, is only proving my point.

I'm pretty tired of this, so will stop now.  You can have the last word -- unless you want to get snarky, in which case I will snark you right back.

But I can see you have real talent in the kitchen, and will still enjoy looking at your photos, whether you like it or not.
