We've all heard them...songs that deal with food in one way or another...

Do you have a favorite...???

Is there one you wish you could forget...???

Any more obscure ones you can think of...???

Two Triple Cheese, Side Order Of Fries...by Commander Cody...circa early 1970's...

This was an early one featuring Bill Kirchen, and was also a very early music video filmed at the Grand Lake Drive In (next to the opulant Grand Lake Theater, next to Lake Merrit in downtown Oakland, CA)...I think the video was released by Blind Pig Records...(???)

Also released on an lp (you know, those flat pieces of black plastic with grooves that went around and around)

This is more beverage related but it is hilarious.  At the end you will see a lot of familiar faces.

"Weird Al" Yankovic has a whole compilation CD of his food song parodies:

1. Fat (parody of Michael Jackson's "Bad")

2. Lasagna (parody of Ritchie Valens' "La Bamba")

3. Addicted to Spuds (parody of Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love)

4. I Love Rocky Road (parody of Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'N' Roll")

5. Spam (parody of REM's "Stand")

6. Eat It (parody of Michael Jackson's "Beat It")

7. The White Stuff (Parody of New Kids on the Block's "The Right Stuff")

8. My Bologna (Parody of the Knack's "My Sharona")

9. Taco Grande (Parody of Gerardo's "Rico Suave")

10. The Rye or the Kaiser (Parody of Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger")

All classic Weird Al.

And who can forget Butterbeans and Susie's classic "I Wanna Hot Dog For My Roll."  Never got tired of that one on Dr. Demento.

Cheeseburger in Paradise, Jimmy Buffet
Stealing Watermelons, Elvin Bishop
RC Cola and a Moonpie, NRBQ
Homegrown Tomatoes, Guy Clark

Here ya go sk bob; Luv this song!

Ain't nothin' in the world that I like better
Than bacon & lettuce & homegrown tomatoes
Up in the mornin' out in the garden

Get you a ripe one don't get a hard one
Plant `em in the spring eat `em in the summer
All winter with out `em's a culinary bummer
I forget all about the sweatin' & diggin'
Everytime I go out & pick me a big one

Homegrown tomatoes homegrown tomatoes
What'd life be without homegrown tomatoes
Only two things that money can't buy
That's true love & homegrown tomatoes

You can go out to eat & that's for sure
But it's nothin' a homegrown tomato won't cure
Put `em in a salad, put `em in a stew
You can make your very own tomato juice
Eat `em with eggs, eat `em with gravy
Eat `em with beans, pinto or navy
Put `em on the site put `em in the middle
Put a homegrown tomato on a hotcake griddle

If I's to change this life I lead
I'd be Johnny Tomato Seed
`Cause I know what this country needs
Homegrown tomatoes in every yard you see
When I die don't bury me
In a box in a cemetary
Out in the garden would be much better
I could be pushin' up homegrown tomatoes

My favorite is still Slim Gaillard's "Yep-Roc Heresay", which, by all accounts, is about food:

Don't know what it is, but it probably goes well with an "Atomic Cocktail" (b-side.)

Re:Food Oriented SONGS...??? - Wed, 02/29/12 10:54 AM
OK, this requires a little story. In the late 1960's, I lived in Amsterdam. A song which was somewhat obscure in the United States (although it did make the top 100) was a major hit in the Netherlands: "Baby Won't You Leave Me Alone" by The Web. So much so that a parodist named De Zware Jongens also had a big hit there with what would now be considered politically incorrect parody called  "De Chinees Doet Veel Meer Met Vlees" (which translates to "The Chinese do very well with meat", although the dishes in the song are Indonesian, but that's quibbling). I am surprised that I remember enough Dutch to be able to understand most of the lyrics, but it IS illustrated, as well...

Off the top of my head, I can think of three food-related songs:

Red Foley's "Hominy Grits"

The Hoosier Hot-Shot's version of "Yes, We Have No Bananas"

and Tommy Duncan's "Who Drank My Beer While I Was in the Rear"

Regarding the 1923 hit song, "Yes, We Got No Bananas", here's a lesser known "blues" tune from later that same year that bemoaned the popularity of the original.

Oh the Murphy's gave a party just about a week ago
Everything was plentiful, the Murphy's they're not slow
They treated us like gentlemen, we tried to act the same
But only for what happened, well it was an awful shame

When Mrs. Murphy dished the chowder out
She fainted on the spot
She found a pair of overalls
In the bottom of the pot
Tim Nolan he got rippin' mad
His eyes were bulgin' out
He jumped up on the PI-A-NO
And loudly he did shout

Oh, who threw the overalls in Mrs Murphy's chowder
Nobody spoke, so he shouted all the louder
It's an Irish trick that's true
I can lick the mick that threw
The overalls in Mrs Murphy's chowder

So we dragged the pants from out the soup and laid them on the floor
Each man swore upon his breast he'd ne'er seen them before
They were plastered up with mortar and were worn out at the knee
They'd had their many ups and downs as we could plainly see

When Mrs Murphy she came to she began to cry and pout
She'd had them in the wash that day and forgot to take them out
Tim Nolan he excused himself for what he'd said that night
So we put music to the words and sang with all our might

Oh, who threw the overalls in Mrs Murphy's chowder
Nobody spoke so we shouted all the louder
It's an Irish trick that's true
I can lick the mick that threw
The overalls in Mrs Murphy's chowder

Here we come on the run
With a burger on a bun
And a dab of coleslaw on the side,
Oh your taste we will tickle
With a great dill pickle
And all of our potatoes are french fried, fried, fried,
Our burgers can't be beat,
'Cause we grind our own meat,
Grind, grind, grind, grind, grind,
When you drive away,
You'll really hear us say,
We bid you bye, bye, bye, bye, bye,
We bid you bye, bye, bye, bye, bye!
And as your on your way,
A tip upon our tray
We hope to find, find, find, find, find
We hope to find, find, find, find, find.

Re:Food Oriented SONGS...??? - Tue, 05/1/12 9:51 AM
On of my favorite camp songs from childhood:

On top of spaghetti,
All covered with cheese,
I lost my poor meatball,
When somebody sneezed.

It rolled off the table,
And on to the floor,
And then my poor meatball,
Rolled out of the door.

It rolled in the garden,
And under a bush,
And then my poor meatball,
Was nothing but mush.

The mush was as tasty
As tasty could be,
And then the next summer,
It grew into a tree.

The tree was all covered,
All covered with moss,
And on it grew meatballs,
And tomato sauce.

So if you eat spaghetti,
All covered with cheese,
Hold on to your meatball,
Whenever you sneeze.

A great version of a Robert Johnson song ( he was from Clarksdale MS).  Also done by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but the original version is still the best.
