Sorry if this is in the wrong spot...I'm really trying to figure out what type of coating that's on their shrimp. It's not a batter I don't think but not sure if it's just a light corn meal coating either.  I've been back many times today to try and figure it out.   Any thoughts?

Woops!  I just noticed it.

A beer batter?  Maybe dipped in beer and then dusted?
Is there such a thing as a grainy flour?

Here is my beer batter recipe which I use for fish tacos.

1 cup all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons cornstarch
 1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 cup beer

Mix dry ingredients together  and then add the egg and beer and stir.  You are now ready to dip and deep fry.

McCormick's makes a beer batter.  All you add it beer.  I have used it and it is very good.  I sometimes kick it up a notch or two by adding some spices that I prefer such as chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder or perhaps some hot sauce.

Greymo,

For your beer batter do you feel a certain type of beer works better than others, or is any beer good to use?

For when Exmore Diner is no longer on the home page, here is a link to the recent Stern review.  That is some great looking fried shrimp!

I use whatever beer is on hand.  It seems to make no difference.  My daughter in law does not like deep fried food at all but she does love this batter and will happily eat the fish this way.

Thank you, recipe noted.  I've never noticed the McCormick brand on our shelves here, will look for it.  I do know Kentucky Kernel makes a great (light)coating for chicken and may give that a try as well.

Thanks all.
