Today is National Surf and Turf Day. It's not known who created it. It seems to have first appeared in the 1960s; Jane and Michael Stern say it became popular at the 1962 Seattle World's Fair, in the restaurant in the Space Needle.
So, where have you had the best Surf & Turf you've ever eaten?
What made it special and how much did you pay for it?
I've eaten numerous Surf's & Turf's, but I can't think of one place that stood out head & shoulders above the rest, except maybe Be
rns Steakhouse in Tampa!

I guess the one that stands out in my memory was at Gosmans Restaurant in Montauk, L.I. about 1975. Right next door was their seafood store and, later that same year, I purchased a 5 pound lobster and cooked it in my room at the efficiency apt. we rented that was right across the parking lot. It was in November and the rates were low. Believe it or not, that lobster was under $20! The lesson I learned that day was, it's better to have a few smaller lobsters than one giant. Tough to force into the pot and difficult to get both the tail and claws to come out right. I wonder what a 5-pounder would cost these days. pb

Having worked at Commercial Lobster in Boston, I'm guessing that at this time of the year a 5 lb. lobster would go for about $8.99/lb.  Or perhaps even $9.99/lb.  I've never had surf and turf.

I can tell you the worst I have eaten. White castle's surf and turf sandwich. I still have nightmares about it!

The sound of "surf and turf" has never appealed to me.  I would rather have a large whole lobster, instead.  I never realized that Bern's Steakhouse had that on their menu.

Fireside North in Indianapolis.  It is long gone, but my family used to eat there when I was an adolescent.

It was my first experience with classic surf and turf (filet mignon and lobster tail), and I remember it fondly.  No idea how much it cost, but it was probably the most expensive thing on the menu (the mid-1960s).

Nowadays, it is just too expensive at the high quality steakhouses, and in my experience, one component or the other does not live up to the hype.  (Good steak but frozen lobster tail, etc.)  Lots of places seem to be offering variations -- different cuts of steak, and shrimp or scallops instead of the lobster tail. -- and calling it surf and turf.

It was an "Off the Regular Menu" offering back in the day. Early '70's. I wasn't paying but I know it was expensive!!
Haven't been to Berns in many years. Can't imagine what it costs to eat there today!

Son of a gun! That's what I had for lunch today. A salami sandwich and a can of sardines.

Guess hat I had surf and turf, too.  I had 1/2 tuna sandwich and 1/2 venison meatloaf sandwich!

I just looked at the Berns menu and didn't see "surf & turf" listed, but I'm sure they could set you up with a lobster/steak dinner. Since lobsters are "market price", I couldn't come up with a minimum cost, but seeing a dozen oysters at $37.95 makes me think it would be very pricey. pb

Due to the threat of death by starvation I want everyone to know that I ate the salami sandiwch and sardines of my own volition, and that leechef not only had nothing to do with that, but did not even know about it until I told her that I'd posted it here on Roadfood.

Goodness only knows what'll happen the next time I have one of my favorite lunches -- a can of oil-packed solid tuna and a can of King Henry brisling sardines in olive oil.

Better watch out Mr. Hoffman. You're playing with a new set of rules now!

Death by starvation?  Roast duck and pommes darphin, osso buco, braised short ribs, lamb shanks, etc., etc.,  I seriously doubt that this man is going to die of starvation.

Please may we have roast duck and pommes darphin again soon.  I know where I can buy a nice domestic duck. For that matter, the osso bucco, the short ribs and the lamb shanks would be most welcome again anytime/
