if one believes the stories, we have baseball to thank for Busch beer....yes baseball. This is the supposed story:
In 1952 August Busch bought the St Louis Cardinals, along with the ballpark they were playing in, the venerable Sportsman's Park. Busch, ever the promoter, wanted to change the ballpark's name to Budweiser Stadium. MLB, back when they actually had SOME shame, did NOT want one of their ballparks named for a beer. (how times have changed!). Busch then named the ballpark after HIMSELF - no rule against that. He DID, HOWEVER install a HUGE Budweiser SIGN in the place the neon sign being the A-B logo with a huge eagle, whose neon wings flapped whenever a Cardinal hit a home run. Now one of two things happened, depending on whose story you believe. Either:
1. A-B already had a beer under development they were going to call just plain 'Bavarian', and Augie got the 'Busch' added onto it or:
2. Augie went to his brewmasters and TOLD them they were going to make a new beer called 'Busch' - and which could sell in the ballpark CALLED Busch...
