First/Last Concert You Attended?

A conversation with my brother this week touched on some of the many concerts we had attended together growing up in Washington, DC.  Our first forays together were in the mid to late 60s when I was still a young (but extremely large) teen getting into clubs on my brother’s old license & draft card – we would head to dives like Benny’s Rebel Room (14th Street, NW) the Rocket Room (NY Ave, NW) and the 1023 Club (Wahler Place, SE) to see DC’s guitar heroes like Roy Buchanan, Nils Lofgren and Link Wray play.

It wasn’t until July 4, 1972, that I saw my first stadium show when the Rolling Stones came to RFK – my mother saw us on the local newscast being frisked as we came through the gate and was convinced that we had been arrested!  Stevie Wonder was the opening act.  This was the first tour after Sticky Fingers came out in 1971 and Exile on Main Street in 1972, some of their best work, IMO.  Great concert.

The last concert we went to was last summer when we saw Steely Dan at Merriweather Post Pavilion.  Although Donald Fagen and Walter Becker have aged some, they still rocked out on a very hot and humid night and put on a great show that left us aging hipsters dancing in the aisles.  But we didn’t care about our beer-bellies and sagging body parts, for that night, we were all teenagers again.  Good times.  Anyone else have any memories they’d care to share?

I love this one. For  those not aware, I am a stagehand, so I see concerts on a really regular basis when they come to town. However, I'll answer based on concerts I attended on purpose, having bought a ticket, rather than the ones I have to attend whether I like it or not.

First one ever was Amy Grant in winter, 1988. She played a local high school gym, of all places, and I went with my church youth group. Last one was Paul Thorn, in the club house at our local minor league ball park, last April.

Last one was Steve Earle and the Dukes and Duchesses with Alison Moorer, last October. They kicked serious ass.

Any truth to the rumor that you demanded a senior citizen discount at that show?

The 1st is a little fuzzy! It might have been The Young Rascals at Iona College. Then again, it could have been something at the Schaeffer Festival in Central Park or something at the Fillmore East. The last one was Sugarland at Orlando's Amway Center.

First as a teen:  Chuck Berry and Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Orr auditorium, New Wilmington, PA, 1964.

First as adult:  Janis Joplin @ U-Hall, U.VA. two weeks before her death.

Most recent:  Rod Stewart, Copacabana Beach, RJ, 12/31/94 - 01/01/1995.  Turns out that this concert still holds the Guiness Record for "world's largest".

My first concerts in the early 60's were at the Lambertville Music Circus in NJ where I saw Dave Brubeck and Maynard Ferguson. I don't remember which was first. By 1966, Uncle Sam's Air Force owned me, but I did get to the Newport Folk Festival that year. I remember little of that weekend. The first Rock Concert (not counting the numerous Phillipino cover bands in Saigon) was in the late 60's when I saw Jefferson Airplane in New Orleans. Cat Mother and the All-night Newsboys opened. Again, I remember very little and that is somewhat "distorted" if you catch my drift. The 70's were busy with many trips to the Spectrum in Philadelphia and I started getting tired of the whole scene. I attended my last just before moving to Florida in 1979 at Madison Square Garden. Bob Dylan w/Rolling Thunder. That may have been my favorite; Leon Russell ranks right up there, too. pb
Re:First/Last Concert You Attended? 2012/03/16 14:48:42
I think the first one was The Statler Brothers at the Winnebago County (IL) Fair sometime in the '70s, but that was a family outing.  First one I went to without adult supervision was Willie Nelson at Alpine Valley (East Troy, WI) in 1981.

Most recent was Ingrid Michaelson here in Madison at the Overture Center in October, 2010, and we're going to see her there again next month.

First one was in 1987, Whitesnake and Great White. Left the place deaf.
I'm trying to remember my last one, I think it was Ronnie James Dio at a small club in Seattle in 2000. Well, it wasn't a concert as much as it was a club gig, but come on, it was Dio. The last big one I went to was probably Pantera and Anthrax in 1997. I honestly don't like going to concerts, so I haven't been to many.

I'm terrible with dates and I even tried to research when these groups played here - Cream about 1970 at the Warehouse, which was just that, an old warehouse on the waterfront, nothing but a stage and carpet remnants.  Last one was the mid-80's and is a toss up between the Eurhythmics at Tulane's McAllister auditorium or the Rolling Stones in the Superdome (Steel Wheels tour?)

I used to see Johnny Mathis, The Kingston Trio and Peter, Paul and Mary every year at The Greek.   Well at least 4 or 5 times.

My favorite was Marty Robbins.

Holy Crap, I was at that one too! Had a friend that went to Iona and I went up for a weekend.

My first concerts were the Murray the K Holiday Shows at the Brooklyn Fox. You couldn't beat it, 10 or 12 acts: The Ronnettes, Ben E King, Jay & the Americans, Jan & Dean, The Crystals and on and on. Jackie Wilson almost always closed the show, all for only $2. This was in 1963/4. Great memories.

Most recent was the Girl Group Reunion Spectacular at Lincoln Center last summer. Terrific show, many many Girl groups from the 1960's, outdoors on a beautiful summer day, most of them sounded great. If you jump around You Tube there's lots of footage from the show, but here's a sample:

Not sure the first but it was in the mid 1960's. Probably Peter Paul and Mary because I've seen them maybe 20 times and Mary solo in a very small venue about 3 times. But I also saw most of the great MoTown groups of that era too, Supremes, Tempations, Sly and the Family Stone, Smokey Robinson and many more. Last....    I can't remember! Haven't gone to one in maybe 15 years. I am disabled now and very hard for me to go to concerts or movies.

Hello all ,
First one was the Beach Boys in 1981 at the Hartford Civic Center . Have seen them over 100 times in all its different incarnations . Stoked for the 50th Anniversary tour this summer as they all regroup .
Almost got tossed from Hartford as we were 5th row center and I kept surfing on my seat . The security guys gacve up by the encore .
Last one was Areosmith / Doobie Brothers last summer at Bethel Woods in NY , home of the original Woodstock Festival . Great vibes whenever we go there and gonna catch the Boys and Dave Mathews as well this summer there

Yeah, usually we'd just party and not remember the shows. What kind of stuff did you play? I play bass and guitar. My first band was like a heavier version of Molly Hatchett, the other one was like Testament, Pantera and some black metal. It was really fun, and we were able to open for some semi-popular bands, but don't have the time for it anymore.

You remember  Trixter by any chance . Good friend of mine is the drummer , interviewed him a few times on TV and Radio but the best stories were during commercials .
Some of the best shows I've seen were
Beach Boys 4th of July 83 on the beach in AC after James Watt said they couldnt play DC monument . One of dennis wilson  last shows , then in 84 back at monument in DC with ringo starr  on drums among others

Billy Joel at the old Brendan Byrne Arena in Meadowlands great acoustics .
Also same location Moody Blues , Styx ,

Recently Dave  Mathews Band was a wild experience

i wasn't allowed to go to concerts as a teenager...was going to finagle a way to go to see led zeppelin in '80.  had it planned out to stay at a friends house the night of the concert.  then,  just before the tix went on sale, bonham died.  i was not a happy camper!

senior year, crystal ship was touring and i was a huge fan of the doors and there was no way i'd get to see them, so, i was GOING to this!  told my dad about it and said you better okay it cuz i'm gonna go anyway!  he only agreed because the venue was known to be pretty strict about security.

so, first band i saw was crystal ship at the tower theater in 1982.  never was big on concerts although i have seen pretty much everyone of real interest.  in fact, the half of the pink floyd concert i attended in '87 or was it '88?  was THE best out of all of them and i was only there for the last half of it!

the last concert i went to was the doors of the 21st century.  whodda ever thunk they'd reunite and go on tour?  certainly not me!  so, that was another must-attend.  funny thing, it was also at the tower theater! i don't remember if it was '02 or '03...

Last = Springsteen / Verizon Center, DC / April 1, 2012 / $120.00
Next = Springsteen / Fenway Park / 8.15.12
           Springsteen / Nationals Park, DC / 9.14.12
If you have never seen the heart-stopping, pants-dropping, house-rocking, earth-quaking, booty-shaking, Viagra-taking, love-making  Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, then you have not yet attended a rock and roll concert.

A few years back,  The Kids gave me a B-day present of 2 tickets to James Taylor and Carole King.  This was doubly fun since I knew JT back as a teenager when he couldn't get 300 ppl in a local hall.  But the star of the show was Carole King who I think was 68 at the time..........such energy! What a great time.  Last year, 1/2 of The Kids (with his wife) took me to the Houston Rodeo and we got to hear Sugarland. Another blast! (made up for the month I was there helping them to re-hab a house they bought).

Carlton, I just read a murder mystery that was based around a country singer............."XO" by Jeffery Deaver.  The interesting point made there was with the internet and places like Youtube, Torrent, etc, folks can now get all the music they want for free. So the only way for performers to really make any $$ these days is to do a LOT of touring/concerts and also selling on the paraphenalia that is hawked at those things. Or to get movie soundtrack gigs or commercials.

As an aside, Deaver is a great mystery writer, but once upon a time was a folks singer, so there's a lot of industry insight in the book
