Any type of indoor exersise equipment has been a waste of money, such as the $600 coat hanger known as a Nordic Trac.  I get too bored exercising inside.  The only exercise I can maintain is "fun" stuff.  ...  Cycling, volleyball, etc.

We didn't have a hot tub but we invested alot in a water garden with fountains and plants and lighting and koi - it went well for about  6 years and then we added some floating plants last spring that came with some string algae that we could not get rid of - we tried everything - it would clear for a few days and then appear again.  We were cleaning pumps and filters several times every day.

Last weekend the pond was drained and the fish were taken to friends pond.  We had to get a backhoe and a load of dirt to fill it in but now it's a rock and flower garden.  A rock fountain is on the way to replace the sound of water flowing so hopefully we'll be able to enjoy the sound of the water without the pain of the maintenance of the pond.

Stock a few weeks before the fall.  They still tell me... just hold on to it.

Bought a 14 foot Bayliner which I loved...  3 times.  I paid for the boat, the license, the insurance, the gas to the lake, for the boat, the entrance to the lake along with all the proper goodies one needs for a boat...

The third time out I asked my friends to bring lunch.  They didn't and I sold the boat.

This is more of a dumb me thing. 35 years ago I got my first mortgage and was given stock in the privetly held bank as a "reward". In 2007 the stock was worth almost $10,000 but my partner who is a very old school tight said "oh no" when I wanted to cash it in to do some remodeling. Fast forward just a few months and the bank got bought out by another bank and now the stock is worth zilch.

SOOOOOOOOOOO many years ago, I taped a $.50 cent coin to a card, and sent it to NY City location, for a Winkey Dink screen that would go on our television, and I could use a Winkey Dink crayon to follow the program. I haven't gotten the GD thing, YET, looking everyday, maybe lost for a time. Anyone remember this show, and the kit?

I remember the show and had the screen and crayons. One day, Winky needed a bridge and I couldn't find the plastic screen so I drew it on the bare TV. My parents did not grasp the exigency of the situation at all. pb

I remember the Winky Dink screeen too. What I remember most was that the dam thing never really stuck to the screen very well. Very frustrating, which I guess was supposed to be a Life Lesson.

I did this too but I think I had about 10 square inches. Probably none of them together! I loved Sgt. Preston!

Davydd, and you're going North this summer!  Get your deed out.

I had that square inch too, way back then.  It's the kind of early exposure that, among other things, made me go up there later and live for four years.  When I was ten I had nothing but Alaska fantasies, me and those sled dogs, and remote cabins, and three dog nights.

Then I got there and found out how cold it is.  I'm a summertime guy now.

A hot air popcorn maker that I used maybe twice, some cheap bookcases that I knew were lightweight, that I purposely didn't overload, but still sagged miserably.  I'm thankful neither were  major expenses...

Trading a mint $2500+ boutique guitar amplifier and footswitch for another one, sight unseen. I sent my amp out, the one I got back was a total POS that wouldn't work. Wrong year, wrong specs, completely beat up. After putting $100 into it, it would work, but I was only able to get $500 for it due to the condition. Guy who tricked me had already sold mine and wouldn't pay me to cover my loss. I ruined his reputation on the musician's resource website we made the trade on, it's the only satisfaction I got out of the whole ordeal. Caveat emptor!

I wouldn't beat yourself up too bad over that.  For you to have actually lost the opportunity to have a 1970 Hemi Charger that was worth $70-$80 thousand, you would have had to maintain it in mint condition or to restore it and you probably would have spent a ton of money over the last forty years to do so.  If you had kept it as a driver, can you imagine how much you would have spent on gas in the last forty years?  If you had garaged it, you would have still spent a lot just to maintain it.  Lots of stuff on a car deteriorate even if it's covered and garaged.

The fact your bug was stolen and you ended up with nothing doesn't change anything.  For all you know, that Charger might have been stolen from you in less than two years, and it probably would have been the victim of a chop shop.  I look back and think about the cars I owned in the last fifty years and some of them would be worth a lot of money, if only I had kept them.  I didn't, but I don't view my selling or trading any of them as a dumb waste of money.  Buying some of them was probably a dumb waste of money, just as buying a Hemi Charger in the '70's might have been.

That "loan" I gave my most recent ex, which he was going to pay back "in a couple of weeks". Which was last August. And I haven't talked to him since January...it was less painful to write off the debt as a very expensive learning experience and go on with my life.

In early 1998, I was buying a new computer, and decided to get a really good one. I spent $3000 on it, and it was a really good computer. But there was a jump in technology, and by 2000 it was obsolete. Sigh. My current computer was bought in 2003 for $600, and is still fine for everything but movie editing (and mediocre for that).

It's amazing how much computer prices have come down over the past 10 years alone, and the technology has gotten better.
I spent $1000 on a refurbished P2-200mhz PC in 2000, I was able to sell it for $200 a year and a half later, much to my chagrin. I just bought a 3.6 gig quad core gaming system for $500 that'll probably last me the next 5 years. That was money NOT wasted. This time.
