In Ladd, Illinois it's Rip's that gets the press but last year I had some very good fried chicken across the street at Lanuti's. Ron's Cajun Connection in Utica has a good reputation but has been packed every time I've tried to stop, so I can't speak first-hand about the food. Brad

Highly recommended by me is Restaurant Augusta in the small town of Oxford, IA just off I-80 west of Iowa City. The have an award winning breaded pork tenderloin sandwich and their menu is unique as you can read in the cited article.

I always make it a point to detour off to the Penn State Creamery when making a run through PA on I-80.

Buckhorn Family Restaurant in Buckhorn, Pennsylvania. I can't recall the exit number. It's a truck stop, but the food is terrific -- if you can ignore the stuffed Nittany Lion (read cougar).

It's terribly touristy these days but if you haven't been before the Amana Colonies in Iowa can be interesting. Plenty of places to eat and shop. http://amanacolonies.com/

I also checked Yelp and saw some good reviews, so I guess it hasn't changed since I last was there.
