Favorites in CHATTANOOGA, TN?

One of the better websites I've seen for finding a restaurant in any city is www.chattanoogadineout.com

The owners say it's going to be improved even further over the summer.

In July we will be going to South Pittsburg outside of Chatt. We have never been to the area before and I have been researching as much as I can, but this thread has been the most helpful.

Last night I tried going to the Chattanooga newspaper restaurant reviews and was shocked to see that to read online, you must subscribe! How do they expect to help tourism if one must pay for an online subscripton!?!?

Can ya'll suggest any good ham place or ham and biscuits? Or good pie places? And which is/are the very best Q places? And what about cafeterias? Thanks ya'll

And would anyone want to meet up for coffee or lunch?

Lavanda, maybe someone who lives in Chattanoga can answer your questions. I like a wonderful little place on Market St downtown called Porker's BBQ. Really neat and a fun little place that serves all of what you were asking and at the other end of downtown from the Aquarium.
I've been to S Pittsburg a number of times but never to eat. I know Lodge who makes the cast iron skillets is there.

Carlton: it is ironic that you mentioned Lodge's cast iron skillets. Lodge and Martha White sponsored a cornbread contest in South Pittsburg this past weekend. I have provided a link to some of the recipes. The recipes look really good but they have some many ingredients, it seems like they are mostly anything but cornbread. I have driven through South Pittsburg many times. Last time I drove through, they had a new by pass and I saw nothing of the town. I think they are also famous for manufacturing fireworks.

Can report that I went to both Big River Grille and Lupi's Pizza downtown and concur with many on here that those are two great places! Lupi's was one of the better pies I've had in a while. Was impressed with downtown Chattanooga in general - surprisingly alive on a weekday night downtown for a small city and very clean!

Found a neat roadfood place slightly outside of town - Patrick's on Hwy. 11 just west of town (Exit 173 from I-24). Good meat & 3 type place, live music evenings. Had good smoked pork and possibly the best squash casserole I've ever had, all at ridiculously low prices!

Bill, you just missed the new Aquarium which opens tomorrow. Chattanooga is one of the best kept secrets around.
TVA has an incredible pumping station just outside of town (can't think of the name of it) right near Lookout Mtn that has anincredible visitor center where you over look this deep gorge and you can see Chattanooga, as well as the mansion owned by Olan Mills, his wife still lives there.
Also, just across the line in NE GA is a great state park called Cloudland Canyon which is spectacular.

TVA's Racoon Mountain Pumped Storage Plant off 11 (or I guess off 24 too) west of town beyond Lookout Mtn. They use power not needed for customers overnite (usually) to pump water up the mountain, later when extra power is needed it is released down through a generating plant.

I should be heading up this way next week. Just a little bit of time, to try a couple places. Likely will repeat myself, and do Big River Grille. Lupi's pizza sounds interesting.

Hopefully, one can still buy Double Cola in a bottle. IIRC, you might have to purchase it at the plant. Anyone know?

I just returned from Chattanooga. I had dinner at Sticky Fingers the ribs were the best I've ever had. I had lunch twice at Rembrandt's. You've got to have the Tomato-Artichoke soup. I'd love to have the recipe for this.

Lupi's was pretty impressive. Try the bruschetta. (No matter how they spell it.)

Sticky Fingers may be a chain, but they have darned good ribs!

My daughter graduated from UTC over the weekend and about 12 of us had dinner yesterday @ Big River Grille. Excellent service, food was superb, and a great place to eat. Highly recommended.

I like the Big River Grille in Chattanooga. I think it is the original. The one in Nashville isn't great, though.

I have lived in Chattanooga for almost thirty years and had never eaten at Eidson's until about two months ago. It was OK, but nothing outstanding in my opinion.

BBQ & ribs - Sticky Fingers
Italian - Tony's in the Art District - sit upstairs on the patio for a beautiful view of the river and sunset
Japanese - Hiroshi's Southside - tell him what you like or dislike and let him be creative - small, relaxed, local atmosphere
Nice - 212 Market good food, nice wine
Different - Terra Nostra on Frazier Ave. a Tapas and Wine bar great Tapas (appetizer portions) that allow you to try more than one thing - try the blue puffs
Mexican - Amigo's - several in town, looks like a dive, but good Mexican food

Rembrant's in the Art district - neat area - coffee ok, the desserts look great, but 9 times out of 10 they are freezer burned.
Walk the new bridge from downtown by the aquarium, up 1ST Street, to the Art District - just opened this weekend -

The Local Bad Ass Coffee makes good speciality coffees 4th & Market

Last time I visited "Chu Chu" I was amazed at the number of catfish houses. Try one of those. The one I went to (don't remember the name) was a all you could eat, both whole fish and fillets.

Just got back from Chattanooga and an over-nighter! First off, my near 20 year run, of staying at "The King's Lodge" must end. It began as a pretty decent motel, that wasn't exactly cheap ($75 a night in the late 80's), and sported a pretty good restaurant, and a great view of the city below at night. It has been sold a time or two, and as the area has gotten worse, so has it. The restaurant is gone. The place is falling apart. You don't even have working ice machines! You do have "working" GIRLS out front, and we even watched a drug deal from the balcony. As I was attempting to call the police, there was a knock at the door. The dealer had noticed me on the balcony. He came to see if I "needed anything!!!" This why my Glock 9mm is like an American Express card: I never leave home without it!

Now...food: We ate at the Big River Grille as usual. The place was quite busy for a Tuesday night. Our server was excellent. On top of everything, and very nice. I ordered my usual there...grilled meat loaf, with garlic smashed potatoes, and snow peas. Three BIG slabs of meatloaf, big mound of 'tators, though not as "garlically" as I would have wanted. Still all-around, this place is a winner. Note: We visited Ruby Falls for about the 10th time. It would still be a great time with no changes, but...they have recently given the place a HUGE facelift, and it rocks! Very nice job! And...on the back of my ticket stub, was a coupon for the Big River Grille. It was for a free appetizer from Big River Grille! A $7.50 value! That was put to use as well.

Next day, I had lunch at Lupi's Pizza. My first time, I had to order my "standard." A couple slices of peppperoni, mushrooms & onions. Pretty good! The slices were small in my opinion. But good. Reminded me muchly of Mellow Mushroom, to be honest. It could pass for their pie. The sauce was quite nice, and the crust just about right. Mellow Mushroom done right, is hard to beat. Lupi's is at least barking on their tail, with a very like pizza.

Quite curious about "Cheeseburger Cheeseburger"??? It's been downtown forever now, and I always wonder if it's anything special...

Lastly, the new addition to the aquarium is open, and it's pretty sweet. You can pet baby sharks and sting-rays, visit a room full of nothing but butterflies, and a bunch of other neat things. They haven't soaked anyone for more more $$$, as far as I can tell.

Downtown Chattanooga, with the aquarium/Coolridge Park area, plus several superb movie theatres, and places to eat...remains a story of tremendous big/little city re-birth.

One could and SHOULD spend a day at every point of interest upon Lookout Mountain...

The King's Lodge sits at 2400 West Side Dr. on the side of the East Ridge. You can see it from the I-24. It's sad to see the demise, of a place of good times.

Also, a Chattanooga legend I mentioned: Double Cola---was not to be found. I used to buy it by the wooden case right off the dock for dirt cheap. They were still bottling 20oz. glass from the 70's, just a few years back. It was a throw-back to a better day IMHO. It's plant, an ancient red brick building, still stands, with another company today.

Like most things, Double Cola still can be had. Via the internet in cans. But it's just not the same...

Another interesting tidbit: It seems both Taco Mac & Mellow Mushroom pizza are largely popular. Atlanta mainstays have taken root in cool downtown Chattanooga. From what I'm told, a Taco Mac that opened in trendy, alternative 5 Points in Birmigham, didn't last two years. I was amazed! Just goes to show you, how Chattanooga's Aquarium area is really a shinning star of commerce. The "fish tank", Eye-Max, a beautiful neon movie theatre showing first-runs, and several fine places to eat, all in walking distance.

THat's a different place than I was thinking. I think maybe it was Knight's Lodge on Market.
The old Double Cola plant is now run by a company that does private label drinks for kroger, etc.
Also, I didn't know Taco Mac was a chain. Learn something every day.

I always noticed the King's Lodge whenever we came through Chattanooga and thought it would be a cool place to stay. Unique location, nice view; then I saw it on an episode of "COPS" one night. Bummer.

In general I really like the East Ridge area. It's very diverse for sure. I've only stayed atthe Holiday Inn a couple times but didn't notice the King's Inn, must be on other side of I-75.

Porker's BBQ has a good pulled pork, a great lunch place, just don't go the same time as all the TVA employees- for Rib's it is hard to beat Sticky Fingers.
Cheeburger Cheeburger - cute 50's diner, good milk shakes, floats, baskets of fries or rings, hamburgers are good - eat the one pounder and get your picture on the wall. Fun spot, I just don't go too often, I feel like I had Thanksgiving dinner by the time I left. There is another one on the other side of town on Gunbarrel by Hamilton Place Mall.

Big weekend in Chattanooga. Their Riverfront Park is opening to lots of hoopla this weekend. I understand there is a people mover that goes from the Art District to downtown and several new restaurants opening downtown. One, across from Big River is called Easy Seafood, apparently a small 2 - 3 location place opening up there.

Lavanda - try Mount Vernon at the base of Lookout Mountain for the BEST pies and meat and threes. The best chain BBQ is Smokey Bones at Hamilton Place Mall, and there are good Q's everywhere, but one must be brave and leave the highway and downtown. The best ribs are Master Blasters on Central Ave, and Old Plantation is on Dodson Avenue. Couch's BBQ is on Lee Highway close to Ooltewah, and I can attest to the excellence of their chicken, beans, and slaw. Their pies are awesomely high. Good southern breakfasts can be found, beleive it or not, at Cracker Barrel, or Country Place, at Hamilton Place Mall. Other breakfast joints I'm not sure of, but there's a great one at the head of Highway 153 - Hungry House.

Stopped at Durty Nellie's yesterday afternoon for some dessert with my daughter. We bothhad bread pudding which was quite excellent. Excellent menu they have and one item I did not get to try was the fried pickles. Anyway, it's a great Irish tavern/pub.

BTW, The Nightfall Concert series starts tonight and runs every friday night thru the summer. Some really good acts are going to be performing, for free.

Great forum here. As a native Chattanoogan I thought I'd list a few locally-owned joints that I love. Some of these you've already sniffed out.

BBQ Pork: Porker's downtown

BBQ Ribs: Steve's Landing (Soddy Daisy, TN, way out but worth it...makes Sticky Fingers taste like Puppy Chow)

Breakfast: the Innside (downtown--looks ratty, be brave)

Burritos: Mojo Burrito in St. Elmo

Catfish: The River Inn on Suck Creek Road, not far from Merv's

Cheeseburgers: Merv's (on Morrison Springs Road, across the river but not far from Downtown--it's much safer than it looks...you will thank me!). If you want less of an adventure, try Armando's on Main Street

Chicken Wings: THIS is what you order at Sticky Fingers. Trust me--their Q is second rate, but they rule on this treat

Chinese: Formosa (Hixson area....in a strip mall, but don't let that throw you off)

Coffee: Greyfriar's (next to Lupi's), Chattz (closer to Porker's) or The Stone Cup (Coolidge Park area)

Deli: River Street Deli near Coolidge Park

Fine Dining: (just in case) St. John's in the Southside, across from Porker's

Fried Shrimp: Nikki's Restaurant

Hot Dogs: Griffin's is a unique experience...the original on Main Street is safe to visit, but there are now 5-6 locations around town

Irish Pub: Durty Nelly's near Coolidge Park

Italian: Tony's Pasta (Bluff view Art District)

Meat-n-3: Zarzour's Cafe, Rossville Ave. and make sure to order dessert. Also highly recommend the Southern Star located in the Freight Depot shopping area downtown (I'd avoid Bea's these days)

Mexican: Amigo's for the everyday, cheap Mexi-food experience, Tortilla Factory (downtown) for something a little more interesting (and also a great rooftop bar overlooking the Aquarium)

Pizza: Lupi's if downtown, Pisa Pizza if near Coolidge Park

Pastries: Rembrandt's Coffee House or River Street Deli

Sushi: Hiroshi's on the Southside or Sushi Nabe in Coolidge Park

Thai: Thai Smile near the Aquarium or Sweet Basil in the Eastgate area



NOW WHAT NOT TO DO:

DON'T be tempted by the Dinner Cruise on the riverboat....yecch

I can't believe you actually stay at the King's Lodge!!!! Tell me your budget and let me suggest an alternative, for your safety.

Town and Country is very bland homestyle cooking that is popular with the over-60 set. There are lots of better choices around. Anyway, a plan was just approved to raze the restaurant and put up a Walgreen's on that corner.

Yeah, Town & Country may already be closed, if not it is closing very soon.
Crowder, an excellent listing of places you like and to visit. I've visited some of them and hope to visit the ones you suggest that I have not been to.

To me, the consistency of the meat is weird there, almost tough or chewy. I like mine greasy!

Personally, I find the quality at CHEESEBURGER, CHEESEBURGER terrific. The service is excellent...and as you 'build your own' burger with toppings...you know it's going to be great. The FRIES are fantastic. Drawbacks: It can get crowded and a little noisy...lots of student tour groups visiting downtown Chattanooga...but the food makes it worth it!

TOWN & COUNTRY on the North Shore side of downtown is a Chattanooga institution. It's been around more than half a century and is quite beloved. Owners are heading into retirement and have leased property for a Walgreens Drug Store. However, the place is still open and worth a visit. The service is superb, the endless salads just fine and you can hardly find a more comprehensive menu. It will be missed by young and old alike.

I stopped in at The Pickle Barrel yesterday for some fried pickles. they were excellent!! I think I'll have some every time I'm in town.

On a side note, went downtown and visited the new Trail of Tears area along the river and thought it was incredibly well done and quite moving to visit. I had visited Red Clay earlier in the day and have been to New Echota many times as well and thought this was so well done.

Took my kids out for dinner to Cheeburger, Cheeburger, which is where they asked to go. I don't know if they all have the 50's/ 60's motif but if you like that kind of thing, it was well done.

I had lunch yesterday at the Rib & Loin on Hixson Pike. I've been there 3 or 4 times but I thought it was especially good. The Q was wonderful and the blackberry cobbler was exceptional.
Dinner at Aretha Frankenstein's. A neat little place with a great menu. Very creative. It's small. only 3 or 4 tables inside and a number for outdoor seating. It seems they specialize in breakfast and you can have breakfast from 8 am to midnight, but I had a huge burrito with refried beans and bacon.
I've just heard about a great place alsoon Hixson Pike called Las Brases which apparently makes outstanding tamales and I hope to try them next visit.

I'm still hoping one of the locals will venture to Ooltewah and visit Young's BBQ and give a report.

Mixed comments here on "Cheeseburger Cheeseburger", but I want to try it for myself. I think it will for sure, be lunch.

My date thought downtown might be fun for pizza. So ya have Lupi's & Mellow Mushroom. We have Mellow Mushrooms in every part of Atlanta. I have found a lot depends, on who fixes and bakes your pie. Overall however, I think the quality of the product from Mellow Mushroom is superior for a chain. Lupi's reminded me of the neo-stoner atmosphere, of a small local chain in Atlanta called Felini's. Strangely enough, the pizza was a taste-clone as well! Spooky!

Durty Nellie's somewhat confuses me. Years ago, I discovered it, and had a blast. However, return trips, have found a "lively Irish pub", closed by 9pm! On a Saturday night, that really bums me.

***I have noted that The King's Lodge is now, a fairly dangerous spot to rest your head. That being said, I still fondly recall, when it ran it's own restaurant, which was good. Across the street, remains a restaurant/tavern...that warps you back to the 70's. I wish a local could chime in...

If you are talking about the national chain it's "Cheeburger, Cheeburger". It's okey, but I can't imagine it's the best any city has to offer. I would not avoid the place, but no way I'd ever seek it out.

The guy who started Lupi's made a deal with Fellini's....something like he worked there for free while they showed him the ropes, or something. His ex-wife owns it now, from what I hear.

The place across from the King's Lodge used to be owned by the same guy who owns Porker's BBQ downtown. Not sure if that's still the case. Definitely a throwback place, all regulars most nights.

Someone mentioned 212 Market. It's a good locally-owned place with interesting original preparations, always changing. Desserts are a specialty. The food is always good, but rarely great in my opinion. I prefer St. John's in the same category.

My favorite place for breakfast, lunch and snacks in Chattanooga is the Bad A__ __ Coffee Cafe at 4th and Market. The salads are wonderful, such a selection of drinks, hot and cold and the Big A--Cinnamon Roll is a wonderful treat. Their low carb raspberry eclair cheesecake is to die for.

My favorite dinner place is the Acropolis at Hamilton Place. There is a shrimp invented by Grandfather there, who greets each guest personally. I can't remember the name but it is a long name that starts with T. Just ask the server for the shrimp dish with the funny name.

Both places you can dine outside in the shade. These are both regular stops when I am in Chattanooga on business.

The Rib & Loin is my husband's regular BBQ stop. We are official certified BBQ judges and Rib & Loin makes the grade. Lots of food too.

The Pickle Barrel is a great stop for beer & fried pickles.

I am looking forward to finding more unique places.

I'm a Chattanoogan now living in Atlanta. One of my favorite places to eat is Teriyaki House in East Ridge. Just simple stir-fry chicken, beef, and/or shrimp with rice and veggies. I love the honey-mustard sauce. He should market that stuff to supermarket. I miss eating in Chattanooga. I think it is easier to eat out good and cheap in Chattanooga than in Atlanta. Seems like all we can find here, without sitting in traffic for an hour or spending a fortune, is Chili's, Applebees, Longhorn, etc.........

I wish the city of Chattanooga would buy the King's Lodge and tear it down. It used to be a classic '60s motel but it is dangerous now and is a blight on the city. A very visible blight. It would be a nice location for some upscale condos or maybe a new hotel.

Yes, can't say that I was highly impressed. Two years ago, I paid a visit for a regional church meeting, and my mother, aunt, and I ate there for Friday evening supper. As I recall, I had the pork chops and turnip greens, and another vegetable as well. I would guess that it is mainly a local regular's favorite, skewing toward the 55-and-older set.

It is pronounced, as I recall, "Edison's", as in the inventor's name.

What do people think of Wally's, the old meat-and-three joint with two locations, one on McCallie Avenue, and the other in East Ridge off I-75? I don't think anybody has mentioned them yet. I went once to the midtown location and thought its meat was solid, but not average, with the Southern-style sides somewhat better.

Wally's is solid roadfood. The downtown location specializes in breakfast and lunch plates, while the East Ridge location features a big buffet of homecooked food. They're a popular choice for catering, too.

Thought I'd relay my trip to Chattanooga yesterday. My wife & I went there to celebrate our anniversary and our daughter's birthday. Initially we went to Red Clay State Park, right outside the city, and this was the last HQ of the Cherokee Indians before removal. It's now a very beautiful park.
Drove past the Little Debbie bakery on our way to Chattanooga, wife sai she wanted some Mexican food, so I took her to a little street vendor on Main St called Guadalajara Tacos. That's all they make there and you have a choice of Cow Head, Cow tongue, goat, steak, and chorizo. Basically meat and cilantro and sauce on some corn tortillas, they were delicious. Washed down with some tamarind soda. The tienda on the corner is filled with Mexican cd's and cowboy boots.

We passed the English Rose Tea Room on Market St and she said she wanted to take me there. I had never been to a tea room and this place is really special and unique, though not masculine. lined with tea cozies and tea pots, and all kinds of English products for sale, they also serve lunch, or just tea. we had a little serving of teas, cheeses, scone, tea, and finger sandwiches. It's not a place where guys are going to hang out, but it was fun, the menu was unique, and I learned that a true scone is not a whole lot different from a biscuit.

Later that evening we had dinner at Tony's in the Art Bluff District. The food at this place is excellent, we had 6 different entrees ( including us and the kids) and all excellent. This is one of our favorite places in the city if we want to have a really nice meal.

Spent the night at the Read House which is a 100 + year old hotel. Our room was fantastic and the service here is top notch.

Breakfast at Aretha Frankenstein's this morning was exquisite. I myself had shrimp & grits and it was the best I have ever had. The food at this place is always well done, though the service has been second rate on my visits.

I noticed there was a BBQ & Beer festival today along the riverfront but did not know of it ahead of time so had to miss it. I saw Guy Davis last night downtown at the Nightfall series and it was jam packed and his performance was really good.

We were in the "Scenic City" over the weekend, too. Just a heads up for the breakfast buffet at The Chattanoogan hotel. Very good and only $10!!! Best sausage gravy I've ever tasted.

Is Shapiro's in Chattanooga still in business and as good as usual?
