Hoffman Hot Dogs and Sausage to go National - Mon, 05/7/12 12:36 PM

A group of investors, including Phil Romano (owner of Romano's Macaroni Grill and Fuddruckers) plan on taking regional Syracuse favorite "Hoffman's Hot Dogs and Sausage" national starting at 67 stores in the Dallas market by Memorial day weekend. They then plan on starting a line of Hoffmans Hotdogs casual restaurants across the nation

I was just about to post this in another forum. It makes me a little nervous about quality fade as they get bigger. They're the only hot dogs I'll buy, and the rest of their products are all top notch also. If they change the recipes or use lesser quality products, they could destroy their local following. A lot of people are borderline fanatical about their hot dogs around here.

Here's a local article about it:

Oh No! Another local company trying to go national. Hope they don't wreck this too. Heid's Hotdogs tried & almost bankrupted themselves, Dinosaur BBQ opened 3 other locations lost focus & now suck, now my favorite dog. Guess I'm gonna have to break pout the grinder & start experimenting.

I too hope quality doesn't suffer. I can get these franks at Wegmans supermarkets in New Jersey. Beef/pork/veal dog. Good, but a little on the mild side.

Their quality has changed in the past year. They slightly changed their recipe and it wasn't for the good. The german natural casing dogs used to be pink...now they have a brownish hue and the taste is different. I am very disappointed. The skinless dogs do taste the same and have the pinkish color

Hofmanns makes a great dog, I wish them well. Its great to see another Syracuse tradition transcend the local scene. They will have a challenge maintaining their quality but I think they are aware of the pitfalls. Luckily, the Texas partner has Syracuse connection so its not just an acquisition. I'll always have Liehs and Steigerwalds dogs to fall back on.

I've gotten a few like that, but from the deli counter... more likely than not they were just sitting out too long. Last 5 pound bag I got they were the same as always. One of my good friends works there, and we just talked about it and he didn't mention them changing the recipe so far.

I don't know but anytime since last summer all the Natural germans wether they be in a 3 pound bag 1 lb pack or from the counter they have been that way. You can even hold up the skinless and see the difference in color..and that was never the case.

I just took 2-10 lb. boxes of coneys and franks (picked them up
directly from the factory in E.Syr. so they were fresh and not frozen)
to the family in Daytona and Naples...............
BTW:  I did also bring a few pounds of dogs from Lieh and Steigerwalds
meat market on Grant Blvd along with a couple jars of Heids mustard too!

Good to see you [posting about Syracuse, again sonjaab. Your reviews are always honest.
I moved to Crofton, Md recently, and the newest Wegmans, opened on October 28, 2012 in Crofton/Gambrills, is minutes from the house. It seems no coincindence that I moved into my house the same weekend that Wegman's opened! (but it was coincidnece). I have already been teaching staff that reds are called Franks and whites are called Coneys by Syracuseans. The taste is on par with my expectations. The main part is grilling them correctly on a flat grill, and blacken them like at Heid's of Liverpool.

Sonjaab: BTW - I hope you caught Billyboy's trip report on Syracuse while he was visiting his roots this past Christmas holiday. It was excellent! Brought back some memories, along with a couple places I forget to visit on my return visits to the 'cuse.

I just bought some Hoffmans at Publix here in Florida a few days ago and had some tonight for the first time. I have to say it's one hellava good hotdog.
