In the local news here in Mr. Shelby's hometown they reported that he was one of the longest-lived heart transplant recipients; he had received his new heart in 1990: 22 "bonus years"!

Without knowing that this had happened I picked up a box of his chili spice mix on Friday night and made a pretty good batch for my wife and my parents who were in town.  It wasn't until after we were done eating that I saw this story.  So RIP Mr. Shelby and thanks for the tasty dinner.  It won't be the last as I use the mix often.

While I've never owned a Shelby Mustang, I've eaten his chilli many times over the years and gotten great enjoyment from it. He'll be missed around my place, for certain.

I didn't realize what a bastige Enzo Ferrari was until I heard the story of how he had a race cancelled so that he would not lose the series to Shelby's Fords, or how Enzo trivialized the death of drivers, something Carroll as a former driver was not happy with at all.

Well I certainly didn't know the poor man had not been buried. 2 months in the morgue while family members fought over ashes.

Apparently he was a driving force (pun intended) behind the International Chili Society (ICS). A quote from their history page.
One person, Carroll Shelby, must be named for his vision, charitable conscience, and most important his love of having a good time. That’s why the first World’s Championship was held in Terlingua, Texas. Thanks Shel. Who would have thought that all that heartburn would be so much fun!
