Charlotte and Myrtle Beach - Tue, 05/15/12 5:03 PM
0
I have used the search engine on this site for both these cities and there are numerous post.  Far too many for me to sort through all of them and some of them are dated.
Iwannago and myself will be downtown Charlotte Thursday night for the NASCAR museum and would prefer a Roadfood place close to downtown.
We have two nights at Myrtle Beach and will be staying at a Marriott Courtyard.  I know there are bunch of places that serve seafood but some current comments would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Go to Price's Chicken Coop for really great Roadfood. It's very close to downtown and everything on the menu is perfect. I love the chicken, fish sandwich, livers, gizzards, and livers and gizzards combo. It is all takeout.
It's been rated #1 in the nation by several food magazines and food shows-deservedly so.
South 21 Barbecue is next.

Paul,

I was disappointed on my  last visit to  Price's Chicken Coop last summer,  it wasn't nearly  as good as I remembered,
besides there's no place to sit- take out only.

15 minutes from downtown  is
La'wans Soul Food
http://www.lawans.com/

Trust me on this one- if you don' t like it- the meal's on me!

Just a couple of my favorites in Charlotte.

Prices has gone downhill. Skinny chicken. Just isn't what it used to be.

Landmark-Central Ave. Huge eclectic menu, huge portions. 24hrs. Late night like a circus. Go here to feast. Don't waste it on a burger. Dessert heaven! Bakery in the basement.

Bar-B-Q King. Drive In, eat in car. Never had a bad experience. I've tried just about everything on the menu.

South-21, drive in. Second choice to BBQK. Close call.

Old Hickory House, North Tryon. BBQ, really good Brunswick stew. Ask for a couple "burnt ends" mixed in. Might ask for sauce on side. Home made blue cheese dressing. Beef and pork equally good.

Crave an awesome bahn mi? Le's Bahn Mi, 4520-41 N Tryon St. Mom and Pop, keep it simple venue. Try the squeezed sugar cane drink.

Have fun!

I'm so glad to know that that wasn't my imagination.
Unfortunately Price's is off my bucket list for future visits to Charlotte.

Back in the day, Prices raised their own chickens in the back yard of the restaurant. They were awesome in that era. The laws changed. Federal inspections forced outsourcing.

I need to try La'Wan's. Looks yummy!!

I've been eating Price's for years and it is the same now as it was when I first tried it.  They always had small pieces-as most chicken recipes call for.
For real Cue - Bill Spoon's first and  then Mac's Speed Shop. Spoon's is close to downtown.

Paul-
The good news?  We were just in Myrtle Beach earlier this year.  The bad news?  The person I was with wanted to eat our one meal in town at Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville.  This is the first time I had ever been in one of these places and it was even more horrible than I imagined.  Which is saying something.

Wish I could give you more help.

I am certain that many if not all would be disappointed.  I am now 70 years old and there is not a lot of lead in the pencil anymore.

Just got back from our Myrtle condo...don't miss this little local seafood joint...on 34th and Kings Hwy (US17N). Best She Crab soup I've ever had.
http://www.mrfish.com/
and while I'm at it, here's a great little Italian bistro. Very nice!

Dale:  I got the address of 7705 S Tryon St. on my GPS and we will definately go to La'Wans.  Also thanks to the Mayor, we have some good stops at Myrtle Beach.

As a side note: Jane and Scott (Cheesewit) stopped in Knoxville yesterday and I had a super lunch and conversation with both of these fine folks from Philly.

I've been to Simmons, it was ok however La'wans blew it right out of the water
I've never been to Chicken Box, I know Buffetbuster has been there but said it wasn't very good.

I wish the Highland Mills Cafe or its predessessor the Coffee Cup were still open- those two places were my benchmark for excellent fried chicken in Charlotte

For Myrtle Beach - I recommend Hoskins in North Myrtle Beach

Dont get Calabash Seafood in Myrtle Beach - go a few miles north to one of the actual seafood eateries in Calabash

Well, Myrtle is kind of a wasteland in that regard, WAY too touristy.

Paul- We visit Myrtle Beach often and have tried to search out good food but it is hard to come by. Our favorites are Salt Water Cafe for great seafood (only open for dinner) and Scatori's  for great Italian dishes, excellent pizza and reasonable prices. They do lunch as well. Scatori's has a more casual dining area when you enter to the left and a more formal area to the right. When we go to Myrtle Beach these two places are our standby's. Both place have websites you can check out

speaking for all Myrtle Beach residents, and I believe I can in this case, please keep your pants on.

I second Mr. Fish...small place but have a fish market..it's fresh
and good.  Parking is a problem.

Also, if you want some soul food, this place is pretty good and pretty easy to find.

Thanks, Captain for the new info on Big Mike's! I used to go to Queens Place on Carver when I was a lifeguard at the beach in the 70's. Will definitely go to Mike's when I get back. Sure Myrtle is touristy, but I've discovered a wealth of little gold nugget places off the beaten path....Mr. Fish in particular. Have you had the She Crab soup there?

yeah I haven't much there I didn't like.  I used to compete in bbq contests and was going to turn in a cedar planked salmon.  I called Mr. Fish and he told me to get
there Friday at 2 pm..perfect for the contest.  I walked in and he grabbed me by
the arm and took back to their cooler...picked up a whole salmon that had been
split down the middle and cleaned, pulled the sides apart and shoved it in my face.
"Breath!"  I did...and smelled nothing.  couldn't believe it, freshest fish I've ever
had shoved in my face

WJ:  Thanks for the heads up on Lu Wans.  We spoke extensive with Mr. Lu Wan.  Lu Wan is his wife but he said everybody called him that.  Super food and super service and they are getting ready to move into a much larger location across the street.
WJ:  Send me your email address and I will send you several pics and I think you will enjoy them all.  I had the fried chicken thighs, croaker (a very good tasty fish but a little bony) mac and cheese, collards, fried okra and all was very good but particularly good was the interaction with the staff.  They got a very good thing going.  Every thing was fresh and hot.  The mac and cheese was outstanding and still was hot after 15 minutes.

We are going to try the Mayors suggestion in Myrtle Beach this evening and going to a blue crab festival that 50,000 folks will attend tomorrow just north of Myrtle Beach.  The next two days they are having a meet of Harleys and there must be 50,000 of them here.  They are everywhere.  Makes me want one although at my age, it is way to risky for me.

Thanks WJ and Mayor.

We got to Myrtle yesterday about 12:30PM and drove around a little.  The next two weeks is Harley Bikers week here and they have about 150,000 Harleys.  As you can guess, there are more Harley's that cars or trucks.  The traffic was so heavy that we decided on Captain's Sea House which is a bit more upscale located at 30 and Ocean blvd.  Very crowded but we got a great window overlooking the ocean and had way too much shrimp, scallops, oyster, flounder, salad and other goodie.  We were so full that we traveled back to the Marriott and had a very good night sleep.  Today they are having a blue crab festival just north of Myrtle and we are going there in about a hour to overdose in blue crab, music and of course some shopping for ROZ.

We did the Sea Captain's she crab soup along with scallops, shrimp, oysters and flounder with their serving of hushpuppies, cole slaw, salad and fried okra.  The seafood was outstanding but I had some issues with their huspuppies.  Perhaps it was not what I was use to because it was basically just fried cornbread and their tartar sauce was very sweet.  I think that is how the folks in the Carolina's like it but it was not my thing.

Beautiful setting and as I said, the seafood was outstanding.  Very nice landscaping.

one of the few places around Myrtle where you can actually eat and see the ocean.  I hate sweet tartar sauce.  Glad you got the soup.

They happend to have the Blue Crab Festival just north of Myrtle about 25 miles.  Roz and I went early and there was a crowd.  We chowed down on lotsa blue crab, flounder, shrimp, oysters and a couple of brewski's.  About a 100 food vendors and about 500 vendors of arts of all sorts.  We stayed about three hours and when we left, traffic was backed up for miles to get  in. We ate at a restaurant on the water which was more comfortable as the weekend in Myrtle was very cool.  150,000 Harley riders were there.

Across the street was the Broadway beach from our Marriott Hotel.  It is similar to Celebration station in Disney on Steroids.

Thanks for the many folks that advised us on where their favorite was located.  Sorry we could not get to them all but there are so  many!!!!
