Has anyone here love durian fruit? - Fri, 06/15/12 5:05 AM

Hi all,
I like to eat so much. I hope there are some people here also love it.
I made a durian fruit blog and would like to update the information about where to buy durian fruit in the US...Could anyone guide me or give me some useful info?

I know that mostly China Towns have it...but for more places than China Towns , Where to buy fresh durian fruit in U.S.A. ?

Thanks for all reply :)

There is a large grocery store on Market st. in Greensboro NC that carries it.  They have alot of hard to find items from produce to seafood. Last visit they had live blue crabs. They always have durian.

I tried Durian wafer cookies, filled with some sort of a Durian flavored cream.  I threw them out after one bite.

Had to throw them out because of the way they smelled.

Tasted that nasty taste all day.

The used to be a Vietnamese run gelato shop (Natsumi) in Dallas that has since done the "deep six".
They did a durian gelato that was delicious.

I eat it when i was in Thailand in 1982.   ... I don't remember a smell, but always though the fruit gave me a bad case of constipation at the time.   Haven't seen of it since ....

Note:  It is harmful and dangerous to drink alcohol with durian.

Jungle Jim's International market in Fairfield, OH has had durian for sale every time I have been there, and that is about once a month for the past 15 years.

There seems to be some truth to that...Russ

I had a durian fruit dessert at this great little Thai place in Portland, OR. It's the first one on the menu (see link). I think I'd prefer a peach cobbler. Also, check out the main menu....best Thai food I've ever had in the US.

I've never tried durian, although I have seen it in Chinese markets; it would make a very effective weapon if mounted on a stick. It's just not worth the investment to me.

I have noted that I neither like nor hate the smell; it seems kind of like a very strong carob odor to me, and, since I grew up with carobs (at least this time of year), I may just be accustomed to it.

I never ate durian. But I've already been put off it as everyone complains about the smel. Though I heard it tastes quite good once you get past it!

Durian ice cream is a flavor served at Chinatown Ice Cream Factory in NYC.

None for me. I'll stick to almond cookie & don tat ice cream.

CC - I had to look up don tat ice cream, bc I had no idea, and the images showed a few pics of ice cream and egg tarts and a bunch of ice cream (and other) tattoos.

No durian for me.  Did a dessert project with it in school.

To me, Durian and Limburger cheese are in the same category, if you once get them past your nose, the taste is great.

As a kid, my father would eat Limburger cheese sandwiches all the time, and I absolutely refused to even try something that

Smelled so gross. Finally he got me to try a bite, and I have been a fan since.

Now I'm the one trying to con my grand kids

Into trying some of the weird things that Gramma brings home for them to try !

I love durian, but my husband detest it :)
I am not from USA. You can find durian in most of asian grocery in the frozen section. I saw one in the Lee Lee grocery in chandler, az; but it was expensive, compare to the one sold in Greensboro, NC or in Plano, TX. A bobba place is selling durian juice in Mekong plaza - Meza arizona. Some of the durian has a high alcohol content.

While in Louisville, Ky. for the holidays, we visited the ValuMarket where my aunt works. I notice they sold durian in their produce department. It was in a little freezer all to itself. I wish I could have bought some, but my family would have objected to me bringing it inside the van. I'd love to try some one day.

I thought that the Geneva Conventions banned durians.

More seriously, it smells to me like carob, only much stronger. Never tasted it, though; too cheap to spend the 25+ bucks to buy one.
