Oh, and if you're driving through MKE on July 17, your Kopp's Flavors are:

Strawberry

A natural strawberry flavored custard with sliced strawberries

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough

Tastes like chocolate chip cookie dough! Made with Hershey's chocolate chips and cookie dough chunks

I *may* be able to, but probably won't know until that day. It all depends on work, the weather, traffic, and probably the location of the dining venue (places in the northern part of the metro are more likely prospects for me).

Unfortunately I won't be able to take part in the Meltonian Mayhem either day.  The 16th is a Monday and I'm a good 2+ hours away from Chicagoland, and I'll be golfing and grilling up north on the 24th.

The lovely and effervescent Ralph & Lori are just outside Cincinnati this evening before making their way up to Chicago on Monday.  Ralph has expressed a strong interest in some Chicago-style pan pizza.  As Burt's is closed on both Monday and Tuesday, we are relegated to "second best".  My original thought went to Lou Malnati's, but then I remembered my favorite kind of pizza, other than Burt's, is a stuffed pie from either Nancy's or Suparossa.  A quick internet check revealed both places are open on Mondays.  Other considerations finalized the decision to Nancy's in Niles.

For those not familiar, a Stuffed Pizza is baked like an actual pie; thin crust on the bottom, ingredients, including cheese in the middle, and another thin crust on top with a layer of tomato sauce on top of that.  The advantage at Nancy's is that they make both the stuffed pie and a traditional Chicago-style pan pizza.  We can order a couple different pies and compare.

The other advantage with Nancy's is their location.  Located on Golf Road in Niles, Illinois, within a mile or so of I-94, it's an easy on/off for anyone from Milwaukee who wants to join us.

Time has not yet been carved in stone.  We'll adjust based on Ralph & Lori's arrival time, but the current estimate is around 7:00-7:30pm.  So who wants to welcome the Pittsburghers to the Midwest?  This could be a cheap date on a Monday night, so leave your responses at the beep.

Beep.

I probably won't be able to go, unless I can get out of the office a bit early. I should know by 3 pm or so.

Great! We're looking forward to seeing y'all.

We are just outside of Indianapolis now, assuming I've done my time zone calculations right, we should arrive at Nancy's right around 7.

See you there!

I'm still at work and won't get away for another hour or so. Unfortunately, that means I won't be able to make my way to Chicago this evening. I hope to meet Ralph and Lori someday, but today won't work after all!

Traffic has come to a standstill on I65 North of Lafayette. GPS now puts us there at 7:12, but until we actually get through this, we don't know our new ETA, sorry. We'll post again when we know, or call.

Ugh. It's currently a parking lot. :-/

Welcome to Chicago, Ralph.  And yes, "suburban" Chicago extends as far as Lafayette.  I know people who make the daily commute from there.  Crazy, right?

Is sitting on I65 for an hour normal? We still don't know what's wrong, but we're thinking this isn't rush hour...

PS: ChiTownDiner, this one isn't my fault! ;-)

Yay!  They made it.  We had Pizza.  A bunch of people took pictures of the food.  I'll leave it to them to post pix.  I think everyone had a fine time.  We had three pies:
1. Spinach, Mushroom, Garlic, and Sliced Tomato
2. Sausage, Mushroom, Onion, and Green Peppers
3. Sausage and Onion

Everything was delicious and the third pie was timed perfectly to arrive at our table mere seconds before Ralph & Lori walked in the door.  They were as relieved to see the food as we were to see them.

Thanks to all who turned out tonight.  Next week at Ilija's should be just as much fun.

We did get goetta at Camp Washington Chili.

Another couple of requests:

Is there a museum of modern farming that we might visit so that we city mice might lean things like the purposes of the farm machinery we see?

Is there a cheese tour we should seek out in Wisconsin? Our ideal would be a tour where we could meet a passionate master cheese maker with cheeses that aren't available to us in Pittsburgh.

A good master cheese maker, at least one worth his curd, should also be able to show you how to slice or cut the cheese!  Very important...

Ralph,  probably the best option would be to go to the John Deere Pavilion in Moline, IL.  They have interactive displays and provide information on all the farm machinery you'll be seeing.  If you go to www.deere.com and search for the pavilion you'll find all the pertinent information.  Moline is one of the Quad Cities and there is some good roadfood to be had as well, places like Largomarcino's (old fashioned ice cream parlor) and Harris Pizza (Quad Cities style pizza - a unique style) are two that come to mind.

Ralph, if you're in the Des Moines area you might be interested in Living History Farms.  And for cheese you might find these links useful:

http://www.wisconline.com/attractions/cheese.html
http://www.travelwisconsin.com/great_cheese_trail.aspx

Just about every cheese factory has a tour but some are more organized/restricted than others.  You might get special treatment if you walk into a factory, say you're from Pittsburgh, and ask which cows give milk and which cows give cheese.  Any cheesemaker worth his rennet will want to set you straight!

If you like Blue Cheese, it's worth going to Newton IA to check out the Maytag Blue Cheese Company.

Man, clearly we asked these questions too late. We passed Moline, Newton, and Des Moines yesterday. We passed up the Maytag farms for a stop in Pella, IA. (We really enjoyed Pella, though, so I wouldn't call it a loss.)

Thank you very much for the suggestions.

I'm going to be calling Ilija's this weekend. I need a final count, both so I can make the reservations and figure out how many bureks to order. I also need a time. Is 6 or 6.30 too early? Are the Meltons going to be in the area already, exploring Milwaukee?

We should be able to make 6:30, as long as all the semis stay right side up.

Just talked with abe_froeman and confirmed there will be four from the Roadhouse clan for dinner at Ilija's.  However, given work schedules and rush hour traffic added to the normal amount of time it takes to get up to Milwaukee, 6:30 is more than optimistic for us.  7:00-7:30 is more realistic if that's not too late for others.

Does it count as being travelin-manned if we discovered that Archie's Waeside was on vacation when we were an hour away from Le Mars?

I saw the sign for that when I was there - and I still wouldn't have remembered.

You wouldn't have liked it anyway. But, I will defer to the arbiters of such things for a final ruling.

I am so sorry that Archie's Waeside was closed, since I was the one that told you about it.  The last time I was there I had a fabulous meal.....one of the best steaks I've ever eaten.  I hope you got some Blue Bunny ice cream while in LeMars!

Lleechef told me abvout Archies several years ago.  I was traveling Iowa and Nebraska on business and enroute to Omaha and other stops, I stopped at Archies.  Who would ever believe that a remote place like this would serve such a delicious steak?  I did not but I was proved wrong.  Lisa was very very correct.

We ended up skipping over LeMars (I pouted) and rerouting to Tea for the Tea Steakhouse. My filet was pretty good!

Buddy: 7 or so works for us!

I am going to go collapse in bed after another good, but hot and sticky, day on the prairie! Details of what we did and ate to follow someday.

If you are wondering how to do time lapse with an iPhone in your car this is how I do it. I bought a Bell brand iPhone holder at Target in their automotive department (not electronics) for about $8. I mounted it on the dash and attached my ear buds. The + button on the ear bud volume control is also a shutter release. As I drive down the highway I can easily snap a photo of anything interesting. At first I thought I might snap a photo every 10 miles on the Alaska Highway but I abandoned the idea for just more interesting shots like these bison blocking the road.

As you can see I am also using my iPad with the TomTom app for GPS navigation. It works perfectly with just satellite since we have no cellular coverage in Canada and very little in Alaska.

OK, I will make it for 7, but I'm guessing we probably won't actually sit down to eat until about 7.30, because hanging out at the bar with Ilija and Nevin (Ilija's son) is just too much fun.
I'll probably be there a bit earlier, hanging out at the bar, and perhaps ordering a couple apps at the bar to share, if anyone wants to be there earlier, as well.

Very interesting, Davydd. I've been doing it with OSnap! To take a picture every 20 seconds and stitch them into a video. Posting results here will probably have to wait until we're not on the road.

How are you mounting the iPad?

It's a slip in leather iPad case that I velcroed to the dash. I can flip it up on top of the dash to get at the radio controls underneath.

We were stopped on the road by the bison so I grabbed out my point and shoot digital camera to take this setup photo. This was at Muncho Lake NP on the Alaska Highway in British Columbia. I had to brake for a moose that jumped out in front of us and decided to be prepared to capture the event next time. I have a lot of wildlife shots ths trip and some food shots too.

The time is now 7/7.30.

You better tell me if you want a Burek and what kind, because they need to be ordered 24 hrs in advance. I was already planning on ordering 1 cheese and 1 spinach for an appetizer, and 1 of each for myself to take home. If you want something additional, let me know now.

There is no online menu, although there are several online reviews, if that helps at all.

I tomato salad + 1 spinach burek, please.

DO NOT (!!!) wait for me to eat. I work til 7:02pm, but if I get a long winded customer I can't just say, 'Listen, lady, I got Serbian salad & burek waiting for me, can we wrap this up?' no matter how much I want to.

If I can get out of there early, I will text you to let you know, X1. Work on Neven for me about that menu.

If we want to stick with Bureks, how about Fritz's?  Just a pub but the food is good.

*Edit  Never mind.  Looks like it closes at 7pm on Tuesdays.

Olde Town Serbian Gourmet.  According to the interwebs, they're open Tuesday.

Or Polonez.
Or Crocus.
Or Three Brothers.
Or ask MilwFoodlovers for a recommendation.

I'm all for Polonez. Crocus would be awesome, but they're closed on Tuesdays, too. My next choice would be Three Brothers.
Don't care for Old Town at all.

OK, I'm making an Executive Decision.
Polonez is open tomorrow, so I am making the reservations tomorrow around noon for 7/7.30 PM. Polonez is Polish food, straight from Polish immigrant's kitchen.

JUST SAYIN'...Three Brothers is also open, and if the Meltons have their heart set on Serbian, I can make the reservations tomorrow there, BUT, I will have to know by tomorrow AM. I am not guaranteeing Burek, because I don't know if they're like Ilija's, in that we have to order them a day ahead of time.

Might be tough getting a reservation at Three Brothers on short notice, even for a Tuesday.  I've got my own "reservations" about Three Brothers after our last meal there, but it is a Roadfood classic spot and worth a visit for anyone who's never been (Meltons).  Plus, they've got the most beautiful view of the summer setting sun.

Meltons, you must speak!  Do you want the sure bet of excellent Polish food at either Polonez or Crocus?  Or, do you want to stick with Serbian that may be a bit uneven, but is served in a historic building with fantastic ambiance?

We need to hear from you soon!

Buddy

P.S. Three Brothers' Bureks are almost like a stuffed pizza: phyllo crust on the bottom, ingredients inside, more phyllo crust on top.  Stands about 2 1/2-3" thick.

Crocus is closed on Tuesdays, otherwise, I would have chosen to go there.

I agree about the uneveness and not-the-best (but not terrible) Bureks at Three Brothers. I have no idea if it'll be hard to get in there, but I can call and see. If not, Polonez WILL be our go-to. They will have room for 8 or 9, no problem. And Aleksandra loves me, so it won't be a problem. :)

I'm still in, regardless of where we go.  I haven't been to any of these places so I have no opinion, I defer to you guys.  I can find something I'll like on just about any menu   That Polonez menu looked awesome.  Looking forward to meeting the Meltons!

We are happy to trust the expertise of the locals. We are not committed to Serbian food. It sounds like both BuddyRoadhouse and X1 would favor Polonez over Three Brothers, so let's go with Polonez.

Someone needs to print out the coupon for the pierogi's.
There are directions on the page.
I'm afraid the dining time is too late for me but I hope to join you for some conversation.
