Fall Tour in Milwaukee, Saturday, October 20, 2012

Glad to see everyone, pretty much on the train, for Oct 21st or so......lets do it!!!
I think a Bayview tour would be awesome......lived there for years when all was cool.The area has had a great re-birth.

While I prefer a Sunday tour, most of them take place on Saturdays because some of the places we want to visit are closed on Sundays.  It might be wise to leave the specific day open until you get a firm list of places you want to lead the tour.  The Doodle Poll shows both the 20th and 21st clear for most of us.  Once you're sure everything will be open and able to accommodate the group on a particular day, then set the day in stone.
 
You've got some good ideas of your own, plus good suggestions from stricken_detective and chicagostyledog.  Narrow down the list as soon as possible, make sure those places are open on the days you want to set the tour, then decide if Saturday or Sunday will work best. 
 
Just my thoughts.  If I'm in town, I'll do my best to be there any day you pick.

The Packers play at noon on 10/21.  It is not a big rival (just the Rams), but that will still be a show stopper for some Contingent members.

Saturday works, as well. i didnt realize the 21st was a Sunday when I posted.....I will be working on calling the Bayview places people suggested, and will try and nail this down in the next couple of weeks.

The only choice above I'm not wild about is the Brewery Tour. At least with the Sprecher's tour, they had soda. For someone who can't have alcohol, a brewery tour seems like a waste of time that could be better spent elsewhere. (The boat tour would've been fun because it's on a boat. But 3 hours on a boat to see 2 breweries no one wants to see just to wait for the one you guys wanted to see wasn't appealing either.) Not to mention I grew up here, "This is how we make beer" just isn't as fascinating since you can drive past Marquette & *not* smell the yeast in the air now. I realize I'm in the minority, though. The other thing is, if we do a Brady Street Tour next spring, it makes more sense to add the Brewery Tour in at that time, logistically.

So here is what I need from you, Contingent & future Contingent members:

Aimee, This is shaping up really nicely. I would be more inclined to do a brewery tour in spring, but maybe if some people want to do the tour this time around, they can break off for a couple of hours while other folks do something else nearby. We can regroup after the tour and proceed to the next stop. My guess is that if we do the brewery tour, either Wicked Hop or Ginger will have to get cut due to time constraints. But if we don't do the tour, we should have ample time for them.
 
Also, we may consider saving Dr. Dawg for the spring tour, if we wind up not doing the brewery visits and if all of our other stops are in the Bayview area. But I don't mind going, either--I tried their Niman Ranch burger recently, and it was quite delectable.

I'm glad you brought that up, John. As much as I want to do Dr Dawg's, (GREEN RIVER)  I think if we keep the tour in Bay View, it will cut down on gas money spent, and we aren't running around trying to get to all those places.
 
Not to mention, next Spring's tour is already half-planned. Annie can pick out the stops on Brady Street & we're done! You're welcome!!!

I think this way, if there is other cool stuff going on in Bay View, we will be able to squeeze it in. WE can also push back the start time because 9AM, even in my own city, is a little...how do you say...AMBITIOUS!!!...for me.

What kind of tour is half-planned for next spring? If it's in April or the last two-thirds of May, I should be able to make it ( early May is the annual spring trip to the Tarheel State. )       

Aimee, that sounds good. For a non-food stop we can all head to the Casino.... okay, maybe not. Perhaps a tour of St. Josaphat's Basilica or some other site around there? Maybe we can get a tour of Klement's Sausage plant!

And like JRPfeff pointed out, we really could do an entire tour on Layton Avenue all by itself. There's also that big Mexican grocery store that sells the soda with real sugar & Cheetos con limon (don't you judge me, Paul Blart). I think putting less "official" stops out there leaves more time for travel, relaxing, enjoying each other's company, and fitting in new finds along the way. I know we're all excited because we haven't done this in so long, but we have to pace ourselves.
 
And everyone knows the Roadhouses are ending the tour @ Kopp's after the last stop, right?

I'm not sure Klement's even has a tour, but it would be kinda....interesting to see how their sausage is made. Maybe they have tee-shirts that resemble sausage casings, or that have those five Sausage Guys that run around during Brewers games.
 
Yeah, Layton would make a great tour. But heck, KK itself is a great tour.

Since Ginger doesn't open until 5, another shopping spot we can stop at is A & J Polish Deli.  I couldn't find a web site for them, but they are at 1215 West Lincoln Avenue, only about 2 miles from Groppi.  I've never been there yet, but it is on my list of places to check out.  Just a thought if we are looking for something to fill time.

OK I regret to inform you that I will not be around for this. I'm going to be in St Louis for the Packers-Rams game. I will leave my apartment key to anyone that wants to leave me some delicious goodies from the tour.

I also will not be doing a brewery tour, and I refuse to step foot in Lulu's (old grudge).
I would like to point out that Groppi's has been expanded, and has a small bar in the back (inside), along with an outdoor patio with several tables, if you get something from their deli or have a giant, delicious panini made-to-order for you. 
Across the way is Palomino (same owners as Honeypie and other places in MKE), and they have THE VELVET ELVIS sandwich - peanut butter, bananas, bacon on grilled white bread. JUST. SAYIN'.
I would also have liked a stop at Dr. Dawg, but...I guess another time.

If enough people feel that strongly about it (I too was disappointed to strike it) we can add Green River Palace, I MEAN Dr Dawg's back in. If gas money is an issue, I can fit 3 more in my car, 2 or 3 more in the trunk & at least 2 strapped to the roof.

I don't mind working Dr Dawg back into the picture. The drive to and fro may give us the opportunity for a quick, non-eating stop for the tour. (The Mke Riverwalk or one of the Saturday farmers markets?) 
 
Alternatively, we could go to Riviera Maya for lunch (after Honeypie and Groppi's), make a stop at Ginger for tapas, then drive to Dr Dawg for dinner (they close at 8 pm). Dr Dawg is not too far from the North Shore Kopp's.

My vote goes for the following, where we haven't broke bread in a while as a group in the following order beginning at 11am:
1. Dr. Dawg for a burger, Green River, fresh cut fries, a dog, char cheddar Polish, or grillied salami
2. Jake's for corned beef/pastrami-new owner-food as good as ever-new menu items
3. Kopp's for custard-no reason to question this
4. Zafirro's for pizza-if it's crowded, we can take it to go for a picnic in a near by park or beach
5. Still hungry? Head back to Lulu's, Groppi's, Honey Pie, or where ever the group decides.

CSD, that sounds like a good line-up for a future Mke tour, but at this point I would vote to stick with Aimee's & Ann's original concept/plan for the October outing: a focus on Bay View with a sidetrip to Dr. Dawg. Many of our Chicago friends have not been to that part of the city, and a few of us who live in Mke don't visit that part of town nearly enough. Given the popular demand for Dr. Dawg (and for good reason, I believe), it would be a good move to head over there after Groppi's and then come back to BV for Ginger. If some people want to do a distillery or brewery tour, maybe they can use that time slot to do so. In any case, there are many places to go to, and many possible tours to put together. We can't cram all of the good stuff to do into one single tour.

Agreed. This is an Ann & Aimee planned outing, so I will defer to their choices and their schedule.
Also, I believe I stated that I will not ever be going to Lulu's again.

I like it! Honey Pie for breakfast, Riviera Maya for lunch, and Dr Dawg for dinner. This would pace the day and your stomach. We could shop at Groppi's in between, do some tapas at Ginger before Dr Dawg, and enjoy some custard at Kopp's, if we're still alive.

How 'bout you food pros getting us into Restaurant Depot?

I have no problem using my card for group purposes.  I'm not sure how the front desk will react to 15-20 people all showing up in party mode to do a little browsing.  The other problem is, you show your membership card twice: once on the way in, and again when you pay for your stuff at the register.  I'd have to show my card individually for everyone in the group who wants to buy something.  They might not appreciate that kind of stretching of the rules.
 
I'll try giving them a call and see if we can't set something up for the group.

Eh, as someone who's been into both, GFS isn't as interesting as Restaurant Depot.  It's like a Costco with a food service focus.

Don't get your hopes too high on Restaurant Depot.  A group our size coming in on a single card (or even two) could raise a red flag that would cause us to lose our membership.
 
I'll look into it, but I'm not looking to make trouble with the management there.

My opinion is don't even go there.  Leave it be, don't even call.  There are a gazillion-big-wad-large-number of interesting things to do that don't involve any risk to your business.

If we're looking for an interesting food shopping stop, the new Cermak's near Miller Park is a worthwhile place to visit.  X1, quijote, and the wifey and I stopped there on Fred's in Burlington Day and loaded up with many interesting items for very reasonable prices.

This is a tour, in Milwaukee, that Aimee and I planned. It is in the Bay View area that is so awesome these days. If you all want to break off and do other things, cool. But the fun thing is, between planned stops, there are so many unmentioned places to see. This is not a Chicago tour, folks. Relax, enjoy, and see a rebirth of a place I lived in for a long time.

Annie, nobody's trying to take over your tour, I promise.  But based on past experience, a non-eating stop (or two) thrown into the mix gives everyone a chance to regroup, digest, and get ready for the next leg of the trip.
 
When we first started doing these tours, we'd go straight through, chowing down at every stop without a break.  By the time we got to the last location, folks were in physical pain from eating so much.  The most successful tours have had a break in the action.  Sometimes it's a walk through Milwaukee's Frank Lloyd Wright homes, sometimes it's a stop at an interesting ethnic grocery store.  Last weekend's Chicago tour included a stop at a neighborhood arts fair.  By the time we got back to the food part of the tour, everyone was refreshed and ready to keep going.
 
It's your tour, and we'll follow you wherever you take us.  But sometimes a Roadfood tour is just as much about the road in between the food as it is about the food itself.

Anyhoo. A few things:
 
1) We are adding Dr Dawg's back into the lineup. Too many pouty sad faces @ the Chicago gathering. Yes, I realize it's crazy to zip all the way to Glendale for one stop, but if you were looking for a sane food tour, Contingent tours may not be for you.
 
2) Distillery? You mean like this one? I'm not averse to this as it's a non-eating stop, which brings me to...
 
3) CSD, I love your enthusiasm. But unless you & the rest of the Contingent line up to get tested to donate a kidney to me, there's no way I can do Dr Dawg's & Jake's on the same day. I haven't talked about it much in person, much less broadcast it on the internet, but I really only eat meat when I get together with you guys. If someone else wants to plan a Milwaukee: Let's Look At All The Animals At The Zoo, Then Let's Go Eat Them Tour, that is fine, but it's not going to be me. I'd rather have different kinds of food rather than an entire day of heavy food planned. We learned our lesson with that one awhile back. Also I'm going to take this moment to brag a little & say we have a Zaffiro's around the corner from my work & I can have it any time I want, MUAHAHAHAHA. ok, moving on.
 
4) I hate to use the word gentrified, but there are a lot of cute little mom & pop shops in Bay View that are going to be awesome to explore. Annie, they must not know about South KK.
 
5) Ginger doesn't open until 5:30PM.
 
6) I'm not averse to flipping the script a little, but we have some pretty good choices nailed down already.
 
7) ChiTown Diner: I have also located a breakfast place in the area that opens @ 6:30AM, but you already knew that. (and have probably been there already. With BuffetBuster.)
