Fall Tour in Milwaukee, Saturday, October 20, 2012 - Sun, 07/22/12 9:45 PM

Sorry to Barge in Here, but this is only way to get the UPDATED Calendar in front of everyone for Stricken Detective. AT HER Request the date has been added to the title--  Have a great time my friends.

FALL TOUR IN MILWAUKEE,

 SATURDAY,  OCTOBER, 20, 2012

-original post-
Every party has it's pooper, so let it be me. We haven't done a Cheesehead in Beer Town tour in a while. There are some great new places that only the chosen few have experienced. Dr.Dawg in Glendale serves up a fabulous Niman Ranch Cheeseburger similar to Pearl's Phat Burger in Mill Valley, CA. Voted one of the top burgers in Milwaukee Magazine, last month. Jake's has a new owner and newer sandwiches. The food is better than ever. How about the Industri Cafe'? Ate there two weeks ago. Best meal I've had in Milwaukee in years. Recommended by Scott Sebastian, owner of Sebastian's in Racine. Shall I continue? Mexican food, you say? Riveria Maya on KK in Milwaukee. Time to leave the comfort zone! Milwaukee's a great food destination with places most haven't experienced. Your time is now!

No reason we can't do both--on different days of course.  Let's set a date for the Chicago tour, then you can work up something for Milwaukee.  Us Flatlanders have been waiting for another Beer Town tour for a while.

Been out of the Roadfood/Contingent loop for a while, not kept tabs on events. Not trying to jump the shark, prefer to eat one.

Just don't stay for the fishfry.  Lakefront was the absolute worst of any of the area FF's Pie Diva & The Pips have tried in the last three years.

What a small world! Nina and I have our connection with the Klisch Bros, owners of Lakefront Brewery. They're from Chicago. Seven years ago, we had our cart at the brewery for St Patrick's Day. They contract their kitchen out for their Friday Fish Fry. We like their polka bank and beer.

My two cents is that Jim, Bobbi and myself are on the same page. The Lakefront Brewery tour is almost a must do for a Milwaukee visit; the fish fry there as well as Serb Hall should be avoided at all costs. Lakefront Friday has a very fun polka band but that does not make up for the medicore fish fry. http://www.lakefrontbrewery.com/details_details.html

We haven't done one in a very long time!! At least, I don't remember our last one, which means it's been too long.

ann_peeples will be our hostess with the mostest!  I have taken the liberty of reading through some old threads to get a feel for what people wanted to do, and have some suggestions.

I will post my original idea first, let's get this thing figured out!

In another thread Ann mentioned doing a tour with a focus on the east side of Milwaukee.  Is this still part of the plan?  How far into the Fall are you thinking?  I'll be tied up the first weekend in October, doing the American Royal BBQ Cook-Off in Kansas City.

I have asked that the posts about doing a Milwaukee Tour be moved to this thread. In the meantime...

I think we should do this on a Sunday. We could start with brunch at Honeypie Cafe.

Then we could do a brewery tour.

Not sure what the difference is other than the 3 hours it takes?

After that, we might be hungry, so we could go here & NOT put ketchup on our Dawg's.

Then we might want dessert.

I tried to post a Google link, but that just did not work out.

All places to eat & times & etc open to negotiation.

If we decide not to do this on a Sunday, we could go here.

And if we are still hungry after all of the above, we could have dinner here.

What say you, Contingent & future Contingent members?

I want that banana pudding, too!  If we go from Moody's, it would be a straight shot down Lake Shore Drive, into downtown, then on to La Palapa on the west side.  Maybe some sight-seeing around the Loop while we're downtown, work off those Moody's burgers!

In another thread Ann mentioned doing a tour with a focus on the east side of Milwaukee.  Is this still part of the plan?  How far into the Fall are you thinking?  I'll be tied up the first weekend in October, doing the American Royal BBQ Cook-Off in Kansas City.

Not really, this is more of a near south side tour, with some of the places CSD mentioned, and some of the places I've missed on other tours & even one place I found by googling "Milwaukee Desserts" just to give some new places a chance (even though everyone knows the tour ends @ Kopps. ).

Ann knows the East Side better than I do. If I did an East Side tour we'd do Oakland Gyros, Crazy Rick's Burritos, Pizza Ma--oops , Beans & Barley, Simma's, and then a movie @ The Oriental--they still serve popcorn with actual butter on it!!! And you know what else? They are not far from JAKE'S!!!   But I am pretty sure Crazy Rick has hung up his serape for good.

Since Ann has been cooking professionally for most of her career, I would think her choices will be different from mine. I cook, too, but not professionally only because I'm a guido & that's what we do to the girls when they're 3: wash their hands, put 'em in an apron, tie their hair back, stand them on a chair or stepstool & have them cut ravioli or pasta, or flour the boards.

Deciding on a date is the fun part of any of these tours.  We're never going to be able to accommodate everyone, but we sure can try! I was thinking September, since it appears the day that works best for everyone for the Chicago tour is August 8 (of the people who voted). We have to take into consideration how long they do the boat tours, too, if that is what the group decides.

My vote goes to Jake's for a corned beef sandwich, Dr Dawg for a Niman Ranch char cheddar burger, char cheddar Polish, fresh cut fries, and a Green River or Sprecher's root beer on tap(free refills). Must go to Kopp's. Riveria Maya, Cafe Lulu, Transfer Pizza, and Honey Pie. Forgot about a Scala's Italian beef and char salami sandwich at Dr Dawg's. Did I mention I trained David Ross, the owner of Dr Dawg's at Hot Dog U.?

Imho having done all the brewery tours, Lakefront is the only one I'd recommend. That said, the Riverwalk boat tour is a fun water trip on an overgrown pontoon boat but there's no need to visit The Milwaukee Ale House (which has great beer) or Rockbottom (which has ok but not great beers). Both of those can be done by ourselves for free if you wish. Lakefront is akin to visiting a comedy club and is fun even for teetotalers if they appreciate drinking jokes.

Ok, so is *that* what the difference is between the boat tour & the Lakefront tour--the boat tour we have no choice & *have* to see all 3 breweries? No contest then, boat tour isn't a choice anymore, people!

Thanks for taking the bull by the horns my detective friend, life is a little hectic right now-appreciate you steering the boat!!
You are quite welcome!! I know you'd do the same if the reverse situation were true. I am looking forward to "Milwaukee's Fashionable East Side Tour--Peeples Style!" in the future. :)

Would have loved you and Mrs. Hoffman to join us, but certainly understand your commitments!! i know on any given Sunday in fall, Mr. Peeples will NOT join us..but doesnt stop me....
I agree about the boat tour, not something I care to do, and its quite expensive....
The tour doesnt have to include the east side-I would just like to plan a route that is driver friendly......and not too far between destinations, if possible....
A walking tour would be fun, but am at a loss as to which area! Suggestions very welcome and encouraged....

Brady Street could take in Italian, Middle Eastern, real Mexican and Thai. Jus' Sayin'. Would the $ saved by not driving make up for the prices found on this diverse street?

I would love to Visit Jakes( are they open on Sunday, CSD?) Have been told by my friend who owns Robert Haack jeweler( in Glendale) that Dr. Dawg's is fantastic......Kopps not too far from there......Solly's is also on the way too and from-many other places in between-kind of a round about of five miles....

Saturdays are a tough call for me no matter when they start.  Don't worry about it though, I'll make it work if I can.  The only times I'm absolutely not available for a Milwaukee tour are the first weekend in October when I'll be at the American Royal BBQ in Kansas City, and whichever weekend we choose for the Contingent's Chicago tour being arranged by abe_froeman.

This sounds really wonderful and like lots of fun-
and I would love to participate and so would Mr.
BUT
September we are completely booked. (except for Sept 1,2,3)
So that is our sad availability story...
1st weekend of Sept or it's Oct for us.
We are, however, completely free in October.....

Should we do the Chicago gathering in September and Milwaukee gathering in October then? According to the chart 9-1 and 9-8 are the best days for Chicago.

Nail down your Chi-town tour in September-October in Milwaukee is usually an awesome, warm time of year.I see no conflict and would love lots of get togrthers! We dont get cold until early November, despite rumors!

I have been thinking.....the Bay View area has some fantastic restaurants now, along with Groppi's Italian grocery. The lake is also right there, also, with neat views of downtown across the bay. What does everyone think?

A Bayview-centric tour would be nice, and so would something drawing from both the East Side and Bayview--whatever you and Aimee decide.

Groppi's is a nice little market with some good deli items, though we'll have to haul our goods to a nearby park to chow down.

Other Bayview (or vicinity) places to visit could include Palomino, Honeypie, Riviera Maya or umpteen other Mex places to the west, several Mexican bakeries to the west, Three Brothers, Dom and Phil Demarini's Pizza, Transfer Pizza, At Random, Tenuta's Restaurant, and many other places.

Now that we have September 1st nailed down for The Contingent's Chicago Tour, we should start looking seriously at October dates for this one.  From our end, the only date we absolutely couldn't be there would be the weekend of October 5-7.  The rest of the month is doable.

Since not everyone in The Contingent visits Roadfood as frequently as others, let me suggest to the organizers of this event that they also post it on Facebook, and also send out PM's alerting people to check out the thread and fill out the Doodle Poll.

If you need a list of current members, I can provide it.

Annie, it's kind of like Abraham Lincoln once said: "All of The Contingent are on Roadfood some of the time, and some of The Contingent are on Roadfood all of the time, but you'll never find all of The Contingent on Roadfood all of the time."

Anyway, I'll send you as complete a list as I can muster it.

I'm probably good for all of October. Possibly not the 20th & 21st but I'm not sure yet.

I love October, and this sounds like a great tour.  I think my favorite thing I've done with the Contingent to date was that fall tour a couple years ago where we walked by those Frank Lloyd Write houses.  We went to an awesome variety of places on that day, and this tour in the works sounds like a similar deal.  Filled out the Doodle, hope this comes together.

Doodle completed- we currently have nothing scheduled for October, so hopefully nothing we can't get out of will come up.

My crystal ball also finds the 13th a bad day unless we have it in New Orleans.

Looking at the doodle poll, September 20th and 21st seem to be the strongest days.  There are a couple of people who haven't yet responded, but it looks like that's the weekend, right?
