That you never got to eat and really, really wanted.

The individual cereal boxes reminded me of that.
I also never got the individual chip bags in my lunch or as a snack in the afternoon.
My mother was very price conscious.

Do you know that chocolate chips came in a bag?  My mother made her own so I envied the neighbors who had them all of the time.

Little did I know!

Oreos. My mother would never buy them. She bought Hydrox instead.

Anything from a store! When I was a kid, all I wanted was store-bought stuff. My mom canned or froze the fruits and vegetables from our garden, she always made baked goods, my dad hunted so we always had "weird" meat, she made her own jam and jelly, barbecue sauce, etc. We also get eggs and milk from the farm down the road.

Of course, as a grownup, I would KILL for most of that stuff (although I do make my own of a lot of things, I am canning inept).

All I remember the neighbor kids eating were olives, we never had them in the house. I've always hated them so I never felt left out. They were something purchased once a year to sit in a dish on Christmas Eve at my grandparent's house, that nobody ever ate.

But, it seems like they always had Fluff to make fluffernutters, and mom never bought it. Or crunchy peanut butter. What's up with that, ma?

Nothing!  The neighbor kids always wanted my food.  My mother was a fabulous cook, I didn't eat store-bought bread until I went to college.  I invited a neighbor girl to dinner once and we were having gnocchi.  She went home and told her mother "We had YONKS for supper at Mrs. Grey's".  Clueless.

Same here, and in my case it was always something less chic as well.  For example, when all the other kids had Doritos I was lucky to get some Indian Corn Chips in a baggie.

And we never had Pepsi because my dad liked Coke and RC.

We also got potato chips in a lunch baggie, but I didn't mind. My grandmother made my lunches... Carl Buddig ham on white bread, chips, and usually a can of Dr. Pepper. I still eat that every once in a while.

I never got chips at all.  In my brown sack was a bologna sandwich (one slice) on white bread with mustard and a red delicious apple.

All the other kids had peanut butter and jelly!

Andy Zepeda had little yellow chili peppers which was my introduction into spicy foods.

My favorite trade was with Yvonne who was from Holland.  She traded me her butter and Hagel (chocolate sprinkles) sandwich for my bologna.

I also wanted baggies.  All of my sandwiches were wrapped up in waxed paper.  I thought baggies were cool.

Still haven't had a Fluffernutter sandwich.

My sandwiches were loaded with meat, tomatoes, lettuce and pickles.  I always felt sorry for the other kids that had one slice of bologna on Wonder Bread.  Yuck.  I guess that's why I became a chef.......I was always surrounded by great food.

I always had great sandwiches too plus my mom's homemade garlic dill pickles. The pickles became so famous at school that I wound up bringing jars. They were real garlicky! Plus my mom always packed little love notes for my lunch and in my dad's.... that was the best!

Love notes!  Very special and a great memory that you still have today.

Mom at home was a great cook.  She just didn't have bagged lunches figured out.  Funny thing is that I still like my bologna sandwiches... the same way.

Fried is good, too.

I went home for lunch on most days. If my Grandparents could not pick me up my Grandmother sent "dinner" to school with me so I would not "starve with the hunger"

Mashed potatoes in a thermos. Thankfully some of my friends had pretzel rods.

I was within walking distance from grade school, as were most of my friends. So when I did go to their houses for lunch-they had twinkies and potato chips! Mom never gave me that stuff. Oh, and kool-aid-, I had an occasional coke, but mostly iced tea and iced water. Thanks , Mom, dont have a bad sugar drink habit to this day.

Twinkies!  I lusted after anything Hostess.  Don't think my mother EVER bought anything Hostess.

The cakes she did buy were bear claws and I now remember once in awhile finding a half of a bear claw in my lunch.

Chocolate rolls were only eaten in the house.  I always wanted the entire thing but always had to share.

We had a mix of store bought cookies, but most desserts were homemade pies and cakes, banana pudding, etc.  Birthday cakes were homemade, and I always wanted one of those bakery style cakes, with gobs of icing, roses made from icing, etc.  I don't think my older brothers could of cared less.  Anyway, I never got one, maybe because of the expense, or my mother didn't think they were very good.  Now, Id be thrilled with homemade cake, or any other dessert.

My very own box of Cracker Jacks.

The neighbors always had them.

Any kind of junk food or store bought bakery item. Everything I had was homemade and sprinkled with wheat germ!
I ate my first Cheetos when I was 18. I begged my Mom for a bakery cake with pink flowers for my birthday one year. What a disappointment! I didn't know how good I had it!

Pre-mixed chocolate milk.  Beleive it or not we still had a milkman well into the 80s in Bloomington, IN and they had a lot more things than just plain white milk.  Not that we ever got anything else.  But the neighbors always had several cartons of the chocolate milk while I had to make do with hershey's syrup (I still think it makes terrible chocolate milk).

We used Quik powder but the neighbor kids used Bosco and it had a plastic clown on the lid!

I'd give anything for one of my Aunt's chocolate sheet cakes with cream cheese frosting.

I just happen to keep a squeeze bottle of Hershey's syrup in the refrigerator for those times when I crave chocolate milk.
