Corbin Kentucky: The Dixie Cafe {est.1929} Prepares to Reopen - Fri, 08/17/12 10:57 PM

Grew up eating here. The Dixie had a multi decade run til it finally shuttered in 2005. It reopened as Vittorinos, an outstanding Italian restaurant that operated for 5 years before closing.
It's coming back.
The original Dixie was one of a dozen or so iconic restaurants in Southeastern Kentucky that specialized in chili buns {no dog, just chili spooned on a bun} it'll be interesting to see if they can recreate the old chili recipe that made them famous.

I'll gather reports from kinfolk that still live there when the cafe reopens and report back.

And while you're there, say "hey" to Deputy US Marshall Raylan Givens and to Boyd Crowder.  Just remember to hit the floor if anybody says "fire in the hole."

They're back y'all. Day one of the Dixie was today. http://www.wkyt.com/wymt/...amp;utm_medium=twitter I would've given anything to sit in one of those old booths with a chili bun and a root beer.

The last time I was in The Dixie was probably about 1988.  I think I'll convince my wife to drive down there in the next few days.  I might have a couple of dogs at The Dixie and then top them off with a couple of dogs and a big root beer from The Root Beer Stand.

We've all gotten so used to iconic local restaurants going out of business that it's a really nice surprise to see one "return from the grave". I see I'm going to have to make a side trip to Corbin the next time I'm in eastern Kentucky.

Don't put off getting to the Rootbeer Stand as they are seasonal. They close for the winter and the owner pays all the worker's unemployment during the cold months. I was stunned when he told me this. How many restaurant owners would even consider doing this?

Got a field report from my mom last night. She went yesterday with her Red Hat group. I had begged her to get the chili as that's what put the Dixie on the map but she went with the chicken salad on white toast, ignoring my pleas. While the chicken salad was not "as good as hers" it was still "fine". The side of cole slaw was mayo based and good but not "in her league". A dessert of carrot cake was clearly "homemade" and "substantial". She doesn't dole out compliments easily so these are strong words from a woman who was born to cook. Her meal was ten bucks including a nice tip. At lunch, the restaurant was packed. It will be interesting to see if the crowds continue to filter in. Corbin has very little in the way of decent restaurants so a reasonably priced place, in the heart of the old downtown, should do well.

This is great news Chef. I'm always on the hunt for places like this. Maybe we make a stop there on the way down for Thanksgiving or at Christmas.
