I was just in Schaumburg for a few nights last week.  It never crossed my mind to ask Buddy for suggestions on where to eat.

S'okay. I've got Feb 23rd on my calendar.

CK, with my perverse sense of humor, you're taking a big risk lobbing a softball like that across the plate--I just might take an inappropriate swing!

Paradise Pup is an almost certain stop for the tour on Saturday, February 23rd.  My only hesitation lies in the small size of PP's building and the traditionally long lines.  I don't want to see 15 to 20 of my friends shivering outside in Chicago's late winter weather waiting for a cheeseburger, then have no place to sit and eat it.  I'm going to try to negotiate a "private audience" with the Pupsters in hopes of taking over the joint for a short period of time.

More on that and a list of hot tour candidates to follow soon.

I'm trying not to start too early; allowing our Milwaukee friends a reasonable departure time.

I'm going to do my best to be at Paradise Pup by 11:00, but it might be a bit tricky. I have a 9:30 AM doctor's appointment in the south suburbs and hopefully I'll be done before 10. However, the combined Dan Ryan / Kennedy expressways can be pretty unpredictable traffic-wise, especially on Saturday, so my apologies in advance if I'm a little late. Looking forward to seeing y'all.

I see that Barnaby's Family Inn has locations in both Des Plaines and Arlington Heights...if I'm still hungry at the conclusion of the tour I might have to stop at one and see if the pizza's as I remember it from 40 years ago.

It all depends on what you have planned and if Mrs. Chicken will be able to come along as my "splitter".  Pick a bunch of places that serve weird things like kohlrabi and eyeballs and pizza won't be a problem.

Re:The Contingent Invades The NW Suburbs Of Chicago, February, '13 2013/01/19 14:45:30
Here’s the latest info on February’s tour of Des Plaines:

I approached the boys at Paradise Pup about giving us a private “party” for the start of the tour.  They normally open at 11:00am.  I proposed both opening a half hour late and letting us have the place all to ourselves from 11-11:30, or letting us in at 10:30 and we’d be out by 11:00.  They declined on both counts.  They did say, however, that they’re usually pretty light when they first open on a Saturday and we should have no problem fitting our group in.

I have my doubts.  But I know there are folks in the Contingent who have never been to Paradise Pup and really, really, REALLY want to go there.  So I will leave this one up to the group.  We’d need to be standing outside The Pup no later than 10:45 so we can assure a peaceful takeover of the joint.  Once inside it will be cramped quarters, depending on how many people show up.

Taking all that into account, they do serve one of Chicago’s best Chesseburgers, making it a worthwhile stop.  So what do you think Contingencies (my new word for Contingent members); do we make Paradise Pup our first stop or skip it in favor of something else (not necessarily a Cheeseburger)?

Other firm eating stops on the tour include Rand Red Hots for Dogs and Maxwell Street Style Polish, the local Pupuseria for, well, pupusas, a tamale shop serving banana leaf wrapped tamales, and our grand finale, Mehanata for a Bulgarian feast.  I’m still researching, looking for one or two more eating stops.

Along the way, I’m planning some non-eating shopping stops and other activities to fill out the day.  In Des Plaines we have Shop N Save; an international market with a focus on Eastern European foods.  We’re talking about dozens of different kinds of honey from every conceivable flower, a well-stocked deli with rows of beautiful smoked sausages hanging along the back wall, plus a half dozen different kinds of bacon in the cooler, ready to be sliced to your desired thickness.  There are barrel pickles, dozens of different jarred pickles, ajvar up the wazoo, European candies and chocolates, feta cheeses from all over the continent and the U.S.

After that there are several options in nearby suburbs.  New York Bagel & Bialy (because I know a certain Lover of Milwaukeefoods who’s crazy for good bagels), and at least three different giant Asian markets within minutes of our core eating area.  I’m even researching a stop at Pop’s Slot Cars for a little racing action—loser picks up the tab at Mehanata.  I’m looking into other fun, non-eating options for the day.

The beauty of this trip, is because the stops will be so close to each other, we can improvise and change gears instantly, based on the whims of the group.

So now I need some commitments.  The number of people who attend could influence where we go and at what point in the tour.  So please sign up with the usual “I’m in” along with a head count for your party.  Also, don’t forget to weigh in on the Paradise Pup issue.

I’m looking forward to seeing everybody on Saturday, February 23rd.

Do you have a rough estimate of the time we'll be arriving at Mehanata?  Because of our travel distance it's possible we'll be cutting out early.

Regarding Paradise Pup, if the burgers really are that good I'd hate to miss out.  Do you think they might be amenable to the idea of us ordering ahead of time so they could (if they wanted) start preparing the burgers a few minutes ahead of time?  Or would they be able to handle an order for 12-15 without any trouble?

Buddy

The problem with deep fried eyeballs is that they pop too easily and then you are left without the yummy vitrious fluid.

Pickled and smoked eyeballs are my favorite, with smoked over pickled, however there are several places that pickle them with habenero peppers or even with GHOST peppers and WOW what an experience.

ChickenDude,
The plan at this point is to do an early-ish dinner at Mehanata, say around 5:00pm.  It will all depend on the number of stops we decide to make.  We might even end up there closer to 4:00.

quijote, ann peeples, and others,
As far as I'm concerned Paradise Pup is our starting point.  I'm giving you all an opportunity to say, "The greatest Cheeseburger in the world is not worth standing out in the cold at the end of February, followed by getting crammed into a tiny space like sardines in a can while we're trying to enjoy said Cheeseburgers."  Or, you can say, "Yeah, it's totally worth it!  Can we get there extra early so we can spend more time standing in the cold?"

Like YelpingChicken, I too had the idea of pre-ordering to save time.  If we can get everyone to agree on what we're having (there doesn't seem to be a "smilie" doing a "spit take"), and get that information to me ahead of time I might be able to convince the Pup Boys to go that route.

Good start everyone.  I'm getting the distinct feeling that our hearty Midwestern roots will allow us to stand in the cold for a few minutes while we wait for Paradise Pup to open up.  I just hope AlyceinRoadfoodland's blood, thinned by years of southern California warm weather, will withstand the low temps.

As for New York Bagel & Bialy, no need to make an advance stop there, the Niles location will be part of the tour!

cjucoder, there are several reasonably priced motels in Des Plaines.  Also, neighboring suburb, Rosemont, because of its close proximity to O'Hare airoirt, is built on a foundation of hotels and motels.

Re:The Contingent Invades The NW Suburbs Of Chicago, February, '13 2013/01/23 02:55:33
I was out doing my "homework" today, prepping for the Tour, and I have to say, I'm even more enthusiastic about the event than before.  I stopped at two places I knew I wanted on the tour, but hadn't visited in a long time, so was unsure if they were still any good.  After today's visits all doubts have been removed, and I may be more excited about bringing the group to these joints than I am about Paradise Pup!

I started out at Rinconcito Hispano, the Pupuseria, and discovered they've expanded their menu to include even more Salvadoran specialties.  I ordered one Pupusa just to refresh my memory and then tried one of the newer specialties, Pastelitos De Carne, described as "Salvadoran meat pies made with ground beef".

What arrived at the table was a plate of three pies that looked like typical Mexican Empanadas.  But these were so unique, so different from a typical Empanada.  The first bite started with an audible crunch, but the dough was so light it didn't even seem like it was fried.  After a second or two the crunchy exterior practically melted in my mouth, giving way to the flavorful beef filling.  I had to restrain myself from eating all three Pastelitos because I knew I had more stops to make.

I also tucked into the Rebueltas Pupusa, a thick tortilla-like pancake stuffed with pork rinds and cheese, then griddled.  Another winner.  Both specialties were served with three kinds of salsa and a huge jar of the house pickled cabbage, a sort of Salvadoran cole slaw.

Our biggest problem at Rinconcito Hispana will be walking out of there without filling up too much for the rest of the tour.

Next up was Los Tamales Oaxaquenos, another small family run place specializing in Tamales.  I ordered one Tamale con Pollo and a Gordita stuffed with Al Pastor.  Two more slam dunks!  The Oaxacan Tamale is very different from what we're usually served at most Mexican restaurants.  Rather than a long cylinder shape wrapped in a corn husk, these are more flat and square, and wrapped in banana leaves.  The chicken was shredded lovingly by hand and stuffed abundantly in the masa.  Very tasty!

The Gordita looked like a sope, split in two, stuffed with a generous load of Al Pastor and other toppings, then finished off with a large dollop of crema.  Red and green salsas were served on the side along with a basket of house made chips.  They even have a limited selection of Agua Frescas; Horchata and Jamaica, of course, but also a very refreshing Mango.

Other house specialties include Pambasos; similar to a torta, but made on a long loaf of bread, dipped in red sauce, then stuffed with potatoes and chorizo, Quesadillas de Nopales (cactus), and a dish just for MilwFoodlovers; Camarones Diavolo.

I also checked in with Rand Red Hots to make sure they could accommodate the group, and they are looking forward to our arrival.

More on the Non-Eating parts of the trip in my next post.

It will be a mix of near and far, with mostly near.  It will also be the end of February in Chicago.  Could be a mild part of the winter, could be bone chilling.  Either way, I'm not planning to walk anywhere except from my car to the front door of the restaurant.  Even then, if I can coerce any other Contingent members to carry me that short distance, I won't turn down the service.

Big Ug,
Is that your way of saying you'll be joining us for this tour?

Sounds like a fun time as always.  I have plans to be in Door County that weekend. Hi to all. Hopefully I can make another outing soon!

I am really looking forward to seeing everyone.
Do we have a semi-itinerary?

Sorry, I've been delinquent in my updates.  Been busy with work and other such useless time consuming activities.

Got a day off on Tuesday, leading up to a certain Mardi Gras gathering in the evening.  I'll do my best post the latest information, including some non-eating stops under consideration.
