Delis that pile it on - Wed, 11/7/12 2:11 PM

So, since August of last year, I have been on a low-carb diet. Basically the Atkins diet. I've lost 55lbs. So, when I see a deli, like today's featured restaurant, I think about places like that...such as Carnegie Deli that pile it on, I think, "What I wouldn't give to have a place like that here...All that meat!" And if I move the bread over and eat the meat with fork and knfe, unlike the delis around here, I won't go hungry.
Marone! what I wouldn't give for a deli like that!

Slyman's Deli in Cleveland OH is the only deli I've been to where the meat is piled on like the one in the photo of today's featured restaurant.

Not always ideal.  Lower Manhattan delis may not go that overboard but I find when I order a BLT they can still go overboard with the bacon.  For a BLT it's all about proportion.  A BACONlettuce and tomato is not what I want.

Haven't been Michael. I will have to check out on my next jaunt to Balto. On Lombard St., only a few blocks from the harbor. Cool! Thanks!

While there is no doubt I'd love to have a deli in RI that has the high quality bread (rye & hard rolls) and meats (especially pastrami) as well a decent side of cole slaw typical of the best NYC (and surrounding area) deli's, I don't miss the sickening amounts of meat they pile on a sandwich.   Reminds me of Five Guys - great for the obese, but downright sickening for someone wanting a "normal" portion.  Left overs are never as good as the original (except perhaps soups & stews).

It's not, but I'd want two!

I never understood why a Deli would make a sandwich bigger than your mouth. The whole point of a properly made sandwich is to get all the tastes of what's on the sandwich in every bite. When I go to a place like Katz or the Carnegie deli, I always ask for extra rye bread. What the deli thinks is one sandwich, my wife and I think is enough for two...........

I'm with you on sandwich size. I have no interest in a sandwich of the sort pictured from places such as Harold's.

When my wife and I go to Harold's, we always order the 2-meat combination, both meats pastrami (they smoke it themselves, and you can tell), make individual sandwiches out of half of it, and bring the other half home with us. So we get 4 large meals out of the one sandwich.

Harold's DOES sell "small" sandwiches (or "half size" or something like that), which are more in line with Carnegie/Stage/etc.

I ate at the Roxy deli last time I was in NYC, and I couldn't finish their roast beef sandwich, and I never don't finish a sandwich. Came in handy on the drive back upstate, though.
