My family is visiting the theme parks in December and was wondering if there are any good places for fried chicken in the Orlando area? They'll have a car so if it's within 20 miles of the theme parks, it's in play.

Thanks.

You might want to give Olde Dixie Fried Chicken a try. Been there forever and does have mixed reviews on urbanspoon, yelp etc. I ate there about 3 years ago and thought it was OK but wouldn't go beyond that.

Wife and kids in Orlando as we speak. They haven't tried it yet, but I'll let you know if they do.

Try Bubbalou's Bodacious BBQ near Universal on the SW corner of Kirkman & Conroy-Windemere.  Great family place and the full range of Q, including chicken.  www.bubbalous.com

I happened to be in Orlando over the weekend. I am not usually fond of the food choices available in Mouse City, so I was happy to let my buddy choose the restaurant. He took me to White Wolf Cafe, which is on Orange, near Lake Ivanhoe. In other words, it is nowhere near the theme parks or convention districts - which, for locals, is a God-send.

The menu was seafood-heavy, and I was very tempted to go with the lobster macaroni and cheese or the grouper special, but I spotted "Old Bay Seasoned Half Fried Chicken" on their menu. I like Old Bay. I like fried chicken. This ain't Popeye's, and it ain't Stroud's, either. What was served was a crunchy, flavorful, juicy fried bird - served over truffled mashed potatoes and sauteed spinach (which I swapped out for grilled vegetables). I am usually one that goes running when I read menu descriptions that include "truffled mashed potatoes," as I tend to prefer my mashed potatoes to include little more than salt, pepper and butter....but, these were fantastic (as they should be, mind you!).

My friends enjoyed their entrees, as well. The grouper special, the halibut special, and the frutti de mare off the regular dinner menu were all well-received. It would appear that this place knows how to do fish very well, and I would likely look for something off their seafood menu on my next visit.

The options for excellent dining in Orlando are still few and far between, in my opinion. While this place may not be everyone's idea of "Roadfood," it is probably one of your best bets for Orlando.

Reading through some older posts and saw the mention of Bubbalou's. My sister-in-law used to live in Winterpark and when we would visit, we always ate at least one meal at the Bubbalou's location in Winterpark on Lee. One of my all-time favorite Barbecue places. Think I still have a Bubbalous t-shirt from the early 90's.

Just looked at the menu for White Wolf Cafe.  It includes an item called "Roasted Suckling Chicken."

"Suckling Chicken"?  Since when were chickens mammals?

I saw that, too....questioned it...and then moved on because the food was incredible. Also, the menu in the restaurant provided descriptions that the online menu did not. It is possible it is a preparation variation and/or a play on words. But, I don't know....it could just be some incompetent boob who wrote the menu.
