~ RIP: Jack Klugman

Quincy M.E. is one of my top TV shows (along with The Fugitive, another QM production) He was perfectly "odd" I saw him (and Tony Randall) on Broadway ... I forget the play they were doing, but I felt like I was in the company of greatness. (And, let's not forget the impact he had on The Match Game ..

He was in a couple of memorable "The Twilight Zone" episodes as well. I don't know if it's available online but he's excellent in "In Praise of Pip". I never really got into "The Odd Couple" but "Quincy M.E." was one of my favorites. For awhile I even thought that forensic medicine might be my calling, but then I learned a little more about it...

The odd couple is one of the greatest t.v.sitcoms ever. There were rumors that Oscar's room was based on mine. Klugman was gifted and I am sorry for the passing of a true professional.

Back in 1964, Jack Klugman starred in a short-lived NBC sitcom called "Harris Against the World", co-starring Patricia Barry as his wife. In the mid-'70s I met Miss Barry through my employer and had a chance to talk with her for a couple of minutes about her career. She mentioned in passing that she had done a series with Klugman years earlier, and when I responded with the show's title, the look on her face was priceless; she was amazed that anyone would remember that forgotten turkey. R.I.P., Mr. Klugman.

In my humble opinion, The Odd Couple was the greatest sitcom of them all. "Oscar" was a hero of mine as a child. What a life he had! A sportswriter that palled around with all the ballplayers; he got to eat giant subs in his bedroom; and he hooked up with Jay P. Morgan. For my 12th birthday, I insisted on lasagna with French fries because it was Oscar's favorite meal (although one he claimed it was creamed chipped beef on a donut).

Growing up...I hated when the Yankees played games on the West Coast. That meant there would be no Odd Couple on Channel 11.

Did anyone notice that another great character actor just died? Charles Durning, a veteran of the D-Day landings (First Wave), and a survivor of the Malmedy massacre of captured American soldiers by the Nazis during the Battle of the Bulge, was 89.

I remember his tireless pursuit of Dustin Hoffman in "Tootsie". He was excellent at kindly priests, sleazy cops, and everything in between.

And don't forget his dancing and singing (Ooh I love to dance a little sidestep, now they see me now they don't ... ) as the governor in The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas.

Charles Durning had a tremendous career, with prominent roles in great movies like The Sting, Tootsie, O Brother Where Art Thou and Dog Day Afternoon. Maybe my favorite role of his was as a Medal of Honor winner in an early episode of NCIS.
