The discussion about what counts as "roadfood" in another thread got me to stop and think. When I first moved into this house, in 1993, dining in the immediate area was limited:
Chadds Ford Inn
Chadds Ford Tavern
JImmy John's Hotdogs
One Chinese place
Today, 20 years later, not even a full generation:
Chadds Ford Inn has been totally revamped to become Brandywine Prime and it's Bistro offshoot
Chadds Ford Tavern has struggled under several ownership changes but still has the name
Pizza Pan's owner finally gave up after 26years due to competition from Dominoes, etc.(owners #4 trying to ressurect)
The Chinese place has undergone the typical sushi/fusion transfusion
Only Hanks and Jimmy Johns remain; All of them were independents
But...it that same general area there is now in addition:
The Big D
Mile High Steakhouse
Buffalo Wild Wings
A Defunct Bennigans that then became a BBQ place, then an American Style placce and undergoing a faceligft
One of the Italian Chains ( not Olive Garden)
Some Bread/Sandwich place ( not Pannera's) that has other locations
Enzo's (local but several other spots)
plus a number of Pizza, Thai, "Asian" places that seem to go in and out. And a few I forgot. Oh, and we have a Wawa on every four corners serving up subs and soup along with gas(everyone of them packed)
Now we are not Las Vegas or Florida and just busting at the seams to build new housing. Yes, a number of new developments have gone in, some with the Townhouse/Condo approach, but hardly enough to suport such a growth in eating establishments. Most of the new adds are not what one would associate with "Roadfood", but it is interesting that the two true Roadfooders...Hanks and Jimmy John's... still packs them in. There was a family owned Italian place that tried to make a go, but fell apart and the place is now vacant
And on a side note, it seems we have a new bank for every 2 food places that have sprouted. Some Big (eg. BoA); some more "local".
It is amazing to me that the area population can support so many
Of course, if I flip back another 30+ years, I can remember growing up on Cape Cod in a town of 10,000 that swelled to 40,000 in summer. There were plenty of places to eat in the summer, but the pickings were pretty slim Sept-May. Other than a Hojo, I think they were all independents.
So...now that my senility kicks back in, I'm wondering why I am even posting this. I guess it's because the idea (in my mind) of a roadfood place is one that prides itself on home-made "stuff", often serving the same thing year after year, where locals tend to congregate and a few lucky visitors get to "find it" on a trip. Most of the additions to my area rely on corporate formulas...and the general public seems to prefer that.
