Arthur Treachers Fish and Chips - Tue, 02/19/13 10:52 AM
How many Arthur Treachers are left? I live in Columbus Ohio thats where Authur Treachers got started in 1969,There was one left
in Lancaster Ohio and it closed last month with a sign saying Thank You for 43 years. What caused the decline of the chain. I always
thought their fish was good.

There's one in Fairfax Circle, VA that looks pretty darn close to original.

Out here on Long Island there's a chain of chicken places call Pudgies.  I think they make a really good product.  Seems they have some type of deal with Arthur Treacher's as many of their stores sell both.  There's a link on the 'Pudgie's' web site to add "Arthur Treacher's' to your franchise.  They must use very similar type of cooking equipment.

Arthur Treacher's  is paired with Nathan's at both the Staten Island Mall & Newport Mall in Jersey City.

If I could combine Roy Rogers & Arthur Treacher's in a franchise...I would.

It's been some time since I last went to an Arthur Treachers. Is the standard fish and chips meal still $1.69? That was two large pieces of fish, those excellent chips, cole slaw and hushpuppies. As I recall any drink was extra.

Last one I saw in central NY was back in probably 1995 or 96. I knew it was a mistake to eat there as soon as I walked in, but I did anyway. Store was filthy, and the food was incredibly greasy and just plain bad. Didn't stay open much longer I don't think, it's definitely not there now.
I know how popular they were, so I chalked that one up to bad management.
When I was kid, Long John Silver's was where it was at.

None in Knoxville.  Mamaw prefers Captain D's on Wednesday night when they have their senior special.  It is pretty good but only on occasion.  Very good cole slaw and fries and the breading on the fish is good.  Their tartar sauce is good.

That must have been at least two or three years ago.

I think it was around 1969 or 1970 -- in Charleston, West Virginia.

douasc,

If you believe what is on Wikipedia, two things attributed to its downfall in the late 70's/early 80's.
1. Cheaper fish used during a shortage of Cod (they say 1970's - I am thinking it was the late 70's).
2. A buyout by Mrs. Paul's Seafood shortly thereafter which continued the trend of using cheaper ingredients of lesser quality than had previously been used.

I loved AT's in the 1970's, but by about 1979/1980, I noticed their fish was not as good, and having read the Wikipedia entry, I see why.

From that time, AT's has been bought out at least a couple more times, but trying to resurrect the once great chain has apparently not been so fruitful.

There were two freestanding ATs in the Syracuse NY area.
One on Erie Blvd E. and another on RT 57 in Liverpool.  There was a
food court ATs in one of the local malls also.
The Liverpool location was the last one to close about 10 years ago.

I remember eating at one in Alexandria, VA at Beacon Hill sometime in the late 70's. Wasn't too impressed and don't remember going back. I was always a fan of H. Salt Fish and Chips. We had at least one in Memphis when I lived there and their fish and chips rocked.

The Arthur Treacher's at Beacon Hill in Alexandria lasted until just about a year or so ago.  I go to the one in Fairfax Circle, that Route 11 mentioned above, about once every month or two.  Their food isn't something I'd want to eat regularly but it's a tasty occasional indulgence.  I remember first having Arthur Treacher's near Binghamton, NY and somewhere in Boston in the late 70s.

Seemingly all the Nathans in the malls/service areas have AT. And they do it fairly well, too. And having the great (usually) Nathans fries with it does not detract from it at all, no sir!

I always thought H. Salt was better but they're gone, too.
Treacher's started when celebrities were putting their names on fast-food chains.  Back then, people had heard of Arthur Treacher.  He'd been the announcer/sidekick on the Merv Griffin Show.  And there were still a lot of people who remembered Shirley Temple movies.  The name doesn't mean much any more.
And the quality declined.  They switched from cod to pollock and made other cuts.  Co-branding is a sure sign a franchise chain is in trouble.
There is only one Nathan's.  The real Nathan's in Coney Island.  The one's in shopping malls sharing space with Treacher's are not the same.  Heck, Nathan's in the minor league ball park a block from the real Nathan's are not the same (and a lot more expensive).
