seafarer john has gone on that final voyage. He died on March 18th at age 85.  He succumbed to mesothelioma, a condition that can affect people who have spent time around ships.
John joined Roadfood.com in March of 2003. He was a frequent contributor and could be quite outspoken. He was also a gifted cook.
Cheers, John. We’ll miss you.

Oh, what a shame.  He was such a nice man.  I had the pleasure of sitting next to him at a couple of restaurants during the first Mobile Glee Club.  Really smart and very interesting.  He will be much missed around here.  Condolences to his wife and family.

I am saddened to hear of the loss of my friend John. He was a good man and a good friend. We shared several 'meetings' with our RF groups over the years and he was always a positive addition to the discussions that took place.
God Bless and Keep you, John, Rest in Peace.

It was his time to sail that great boat beyond. I alsways enjoyed his comments. A few times we swapped sea stories on private messages and I felt like I'd really like to site down and chat with him. That never happened, sadly. He will be missed.

I got to know John from the New Jersey Hot Dog Tour. He attended a couple and I went to a few meet ups in his area. We celebrated his 80th Birthday with a surprise party at Charlies Pool Room. Hot dogs and cake. It was great getting to know John, Brooklyn Bill and their wives. I felt honored when John skipped his 60th high school reunion to attend our Tour. He will be missed. Rest in peace my friend.

Although I was not lucky enough to meet Seafarer John in person, by reading his posts here on Roadfood, he became a part of my "Roadfood Family", just as all of the rest of you have become also. As everyone else has already said, I will miss him and his posts very much.

My condolences to all of his family, both here, and in "real life".

Wow thanks for sharing, but sad to hear the sad news.  Mesolothemia is something I am concerned with as I worked for about 4 years thru college in an asbestos paper mill in Ohio.  He seemed like such a nice guy and always interesting things to say.

I had the honor and privilege of meeting and breaking bread with Seafarer John and Gail at the Connecticut Meet-Up in 2008.  He always had a kind word and his comments on my Trip Reports always brought a smile to my face.  You are missed, good sir!

Wow, this is no way to end my Saturday night. So sad to hear this, my condolences to Gail and family.

I first met John in April of 2007 at a Hot Dog GTG that started in Middletown NY (when I first met several other RF people too). After that tour ended I got to know John & his wife a little bit better when he offered to lead me by car to the Brewpub in New Paltz for a beer or two. We crossed paths a few other times after that, always a pleasure.

What amazed me the most was that he was in his late 70's at the time and appeared so much younger, not only in looks but just, in, I don't know, Joy of Life I guess.  You will be missed, John.

Is it possible to get a hard copy of that photo to us for 3/29 gathering of friends?
I do appreciate any help.

I had the opportunity to share a meal with John and Gail during the President's Day Weekend 2008.  They came over to Mexico Beach and met with a group of us at Killer Seafood.  Then I met up with them again on Sunday for Lunch in Mobile.

This is how I will always remember my friend, good food, and a smile on his face.

Gail,
I will keep you and the family in my thoughts and prayers.

Gail,  So sorry to just learn about John's passing.  My dad passed away on March 20, so I have been a bit out of it.
What great times we shared eating crabcakes in Baltimore, and way too many hot dogs in Jersey.  I'll also miss his advice on where to go in St. Pete.
I wish only wonderful memories of John for you and your family.
