Contingent Rollcall - Jefferson County, WI, June 2013

My daughter suggested that we do a tour of Watertown and surrounding Jefferson County.  There are several RoadFoodable restaurants - Zweig's, Crawfish Junction, Mullen's Ice Cream Shop, Upper Crust Pie Shop - and some other shops of interest, including the fabulous Glenn's Meat Market.  Honey Acres and Kraemer Cheese are also nearby.

We are focusing on June 16 for the Watertown Arts Festival or June 22 for the Sun Prairie Strawberry Fest and Craft Fair.

Let the planning begin.

Sounds great. Either date is good with me. MFL indicated he would be interested, therefore I could , possibly, catch a ride with him and his lovely wife......

June is wide open so far, but I'll need to commit to some demos in Cleveland at some point.  Let's nail down the tour date and I can work the demos around it.  Given a choice between an Arts Festival and a Craft Fair with a Strawberry Fest, I'd lean towards the Strawberry Fest 9 out of 10 times.

BTW, Kansas City Roadfooder CNW has been in touch with me asking about any plans for a summer tour, given that there will be no Smoke Day this year.  Hopefully, he'll see this thread and chime in.

    Buddy,

The Sun Prairie Strawberry event also has the advantage of being on a Saturday versus a Sunday.  We need to investigate which of our venues are closed on Sunday.  However Sun Prairie is another half hour towards Madison from the heart of our tour.

In that case, let me make another humble suggestion: Scrap Sun Prairie.  Instead, consider Saxe's Lonestar Inn, 28 miles due south of Watertown, in Whitewater, for our grand finale stop.  It's a classic Wisconsin Supper Club in a rustic setting.   I reviewed it back when we first visited and then reprinted that review here:

As long as we're that far west, why not head a little south for some outstanding Roadfood?  Perhaps our only current "608" area code member, CrouchingChickenScreamingRooster, could check this place out and verify it's worthiness as a Contingent tour stop.

    Buddy,

Thanks for the suggestion, I was looking for something to the South.  It will make the FIB's trips home shorter.  The Sunday outing will also better facilitate your regular Saturday night gig.

I can live with a Saturday excursion if that better suits the group and the proposed stops for the tour.  As long as I know far enough in advance, I can swap a day at the restaurant and be there for the tour.

I would be happy to check out The Lone Star Inn at some point but I feel obligated to point out that Whitewater's in the 262 area code and as a 608er I'd be viewed with suspicion as an interloper.  There also The Cold Spring Inn north of Whitewater and Sammy's Place on the south side of Fort Atkinson; in fact, we could start in Watertown and just travel south on highways 26 and 89.

Further south of Whitewater on 89 is Duck Inn and those who like lamb at home might find Pinn-Oak Ridge Farms interesting.

I'll throw Jim's Burger Corner in Jefferson into the mix as well.

Cafe Carpe in Fort is on my list of places to visit.  I don't know how Roadfoody it is but it looks pretty unique.

And if anybody's interested I'd be happy to meet for a pre-tour breakfast at Scottie's Eat-Mor.

I wasn't aware of Wedl's until you mentioned it.  Perhaps some Saturday I'll do a Jefferson burger run and hit both it and Jim's...for some reason I tend to head toward Jefferson County when I go for a drive.

kland, it's been a few years since I last visited Saxe's, so I don't remember if they're handicap accessible.  You can give 'em a call and I bet they'll tell you one way or another.  Keep in mind though, Saxe's would be just one stop (and it hasn't even been chosen yet) on a multi-stop tour.

It'd be great if you could join us on one of these tours, although I understand your limitations.  As you can see from this tour, we don't necessarily stick close to Chicago or Milwaukee.  If you ever decide to put together a Fox River Valley tour that suits your needs, I'll bet we would get a pretty good sized crowd.

June 16th is Father's Day.  If I didn't have a father-in-law, it would be okay, but I do.

Either Saturday or the other Sunday in those weekends would be fine.

Buddy changed his mind, choosing Saxe's Lonestar Inn Supper Club over strawberries.  If we can somehow figure out how to do both, that would be okay.  But with all these good suggestions adding to the original list, some things just aren't going to make the final cut.  Naturally, that is up to the tour organizer to decide.

I love Wedl's and whoever had it before them and before them too. I've been going there for over 30 years and they've always been one of the best at that style of hamburger. I hope Saxe's isn't connected to the Saxe's in Waukesha County. http://saxesdining.com/ He's a great guy, one I went to high school with. His family had everything to do with Wisconsin's ornate movie palaces of the 1920's and 30's http://books.google.com/books?id=dX0GtdAuYzAC&pg=PA38&lpg=PA38&dq=saxes+movie+theaters&source=bl&ots=Nts8SjcBj0&sig=P44oXGv4mNZd78sBhn5p1Se8Bpo&hl=en&sa=X&ei=KBVXUbnkDqnh0gHTtIGoBw&sqi=2&ved=0CGoQ6AEwCA#v=onepage&q=saxes%20movie%20theaters&f=false
His restaurant though was not very good the last time I dined there.
His family did however invent the White Tower hamburger chain giving them a solid Roadfood connection.

MFL, Don't know if the two Saxe's are related, but looking at the menu link you provided tells me the two restaurants are nothing alike.  The Saxe's in Genesee looks to be way more upscale.  Saxe's Lonestar Inn, in Whitewater, is definitely more of a classic Wisconsin Supper Club operation, reminiscent of Dick Manhardt's and Wegner's St. Martins Inn.  If Saxe's makes the final cut, I'll be surprised if you are unhappy with your meal there.

If this gathering takes place in June, I might be able to make it ( July's weekends are already "booked up". ) There's a family event coming up in June on a yet-undecided weekend though, so I won't know if I definitely can attend or not for a couple of months. BTW, my ill-fated relocation to southeastern Indiana has mercifully come to end and I'm now back ( permanently this time! ) in good ol' Crook County.
