Pickled Peaches - Sun, 03/31/13 6:16 PM

On my Easter plate along with the ham and potatoes are pickled peaches.

When Sharon moved to California, 15 years ago she was surprised that we don't have pickled peaches in the markets... at all.

I thought she was referring to spiced peaches, but no.

I've looked for them every time we'd go to Texas and this time I found them.

They are not sweet at all.  They're pickled with vinegar!

Not crazy about the consistency because they're mushy.

I think they're an acquired taste.

Never have had a pickled peach, but I'm up to try anything once or twice. Might have to find a recipe and toss a few off of my peach tree in a jar and see what happens.

My lawyer/friend is a Southern girl & makes pickled peaches...but I never tried them. Her pickled strawberries are wonderful. I'm glad I talked her into law school so I'm not charged for the stuff she makes.

We used to pickle absolutely everything...peaches, pears, green beans, green tomatoes, beets, strawberries, apples...pretty much anything we could grow, we'd pickle.

I'm not big on the mushy consistency either, but I love the taste of most of them.

My mother used to make pickled peaches about 60 years ago, and I don't really remember too much about them, except in order to keep them from being mushy she used cling peaches rather than freestone ones.

I'm going to pickle radishes this year. They are speedy to grow...and quick to pickle.

Mar, the pickled peaches I always had were the whole peaches, not the halves like we had the other night.

Pickled usually means it has vinegar in it.  Those we had the other night were especially strong tasting.

But you still done good. :)

It's fun to grow some unusual items....and I have a big bunch of coupons that makes the price of Champagne vinegar a few cents per bottle. I'm not growing fennel but pickling it with orange.

Did the pickled peaches have cloves?

"Pickled Peaches" sounds like the name of a Tom T. Hall song, whether it's about fruit or a lady of the evening who's turned to the bottle...

Good Brad!  [:lol]

CC, there might have been cloves in them.  There was lots of vinegar.

Ahhh...if pickled peaches have cloves that might be why I have never had a batch of them. I have a great aversion to cloves. My Grandmother called them candy...and candy they are not.

I believe the strawberries are pickled with secret stuff including moonshine.

A pox on cloves as well for coming in a cute little tin back in the day...like actual candy!

Did the pickled peaches have cloves?

Yes, the ones I had growing up did. Maybe that's the difference in the taste now.

I agree with several posters.  Cloves remind me of my childhood horror of the brutal dentist my loving mother forced me to go to.  Anything clove totally turns me off.
