Best Affordable Cash Register/POS setup??? Mon, 04/15/13 3:09 PM (permalink)
Hello,
Found out my cart location will have electricity and I will need to submit Z tapes at the end of each week.  What type of cash register would you recommend? I have an Iphone but can't afford an Ipad just yet.  I'm going to start out on a cash-only basis and add credit cards if business is good (I have a Square Card Reader but haven't tried the service yet).

Thanks you so much!!

Why do you have to submit z tapes? Are you giving a % to someone for rent?
I would NEVER have someone elses hand in MY till.

Square does have a very easy POS system that you could probably use on your iPhone.  You should really consider taking credit cards, but there are many threads here addressing that.  See if whomever is taking that percentage would be satisfied with Square's sales tracking. It is pretty complete and available online for easy emailing.  Don't forget you to deduct your sales taxes from any percentages.  Good Luck.

yeah, that is a big red flag there.
you start doing really good and they might buy their own cart and get rid of you. then it's all for them and none for you.

@chefbuba ~ yes, % of sales as rent.

@biker jim ~ i will definitely look into what Square offers, thanks for the recommendation.

@BpCBlake ~ they oversee the vendors but have no interest in being vendors themselves.

Thanks again for the advice ~ so much research to do (and I don't even eat hot dogs, yikes!).

I use a cheap one from Sams club, had to get it for a location that charges a percent too.  What's nice is the pre-programed keys, since I sell several different items. They are all pre-priced, and help me keep track of exactly what I sell, and allow me to balance that against the inventory (I have employees, so have to make sure no free product is going out).

My company Has several choices. We carry Dinerware, Rpower, Digital Dining, and Adelo. Out of all of those, I prefer Dinerware. Very nice, simple, and streamlined. If I was going to select one POS my company does not carry it would be Shopkeep. However, Shopkeep does not have all the capabilities of other POS software.
